UNIT 6: INTERSUBJECTIVITY ACTIVITY SHEETS

Explain intersubjectivity by using the following keywords:

a. mutual understanding

Intersubjectivity is defined as interchange of thoughts between two people. If they don’t have a mutual
understanding, they would fail to have a connection.

b. genuine communication

Intersubjectivity requires empathy. It means that two people should also interchange not just thoughts
but also feelings. Having the understanding of feelings of each other shows genuine communication and
intersubjectivity.

c. “to be is to be with”

This quote means that the only real way to live is to love someone. Love comes in different forms. If we
are not showing love to each other, then there is no intersubjectivity.

Lesson 1: Accepting me, accepting you

Acceptance means understanding that there are aspects of your life that you can and cannot change. In
other words, some things you have control over and some you don’t.

These are the things I can control These are things I cannot control
My health Emotions
Words used in talking My age
My performance in school Other people’s feelings

Lesson 2: Accepting others is not to impose on others

The importance of accepting others’ thoughts and ideas (though they might be opposed to yours) is
another manifestation of accepting others (and their differences).

Harm Principle says people should be free to act however they wish unless their actions cause harm to
somebody else.
Principle of Paternalism is to act for the good of another person without that person’s consent, as
parents do for children

Legal Moralism is the view that the law can legitimately be used to prohibit behaviors that conflict with
society’s collective moral judgments even when those behaviors do not result in physical or
psychological harm to others.

Acceptable or Unacceptable. Determine if the actions in column 1 would be acceptable (YES), or

unacceptable (NO) to the three principles.

Harm Paternalism Legal

Principle Moralism
Apprehending motorcycle riders who are not wearing Yes No Yes
helmets.
Apprehending people who are gambling inside a cockpit. No No Yes
Arresting people who are singing (videoke) and Yes Yes
disturbing their neighbors at night.
Arresting minors who are still outside of their homes (at No Yes Yes
night).
Preventing a terminally ill patient from ending his life. No No Yes
Arresting insane individuals from roaming the streets. No No Yes
Arresting individuals who are driving while under the Yes Yes Yes
influence of liquor.

Lesson 3: Accepting people for what they are is loving them

According to Erich Fromm’s Book, The Art of Loving (1956), there are basic elements of love: care,
responsibility, respect, and knowledge.

Final Requirement (by group): Develop a project proposal or plan for empowerment of the persons with
disabilities. Come up with a simple yet practical plan. (to be discussed next meeting)

Reflection:

Have you ever engaged in a genuine and meaningful interaction with another person? Write a reflection
paper describing this encounter and how it affected you.

I already engaged in genuine and meaningful interactions with other people. One example is when I
talked with someone about the contents of my favorite book. It feels satisfying when having someone
understands you and vice-versa.
