PLANNING, DESIGN AND EVALUATION

ECLECTICISM
What is Eclecticism?
Eclecticism in education involves the integration of diverse philosophies, theories,
and methods to create a comprehensive learning experience. According to (Iscan,
2017). This approach combines the principles of various methods and approaches
of teaching a language depending on the lesson objectives and individual
differences of students. Eclecticism is a conceptual approach that does not hold
rigidly to a single paradigm or set of assumptions, but instead draws upon multiple
theories, styles, or ideas to gain complementary insights into a subject, or applies
different theories in particular cases.
Goal of Eclecticism in education
 Education aims to cultivate creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving
skills, preparing students to adapt to an ever-changing world.
• The primary goal of education within an eclectic framework is to foster holistic
development.
• This includes intellectual, emotional, social, and physical growth.
• Education aims to empower individuals to become critical thinkers, lifelong
learners, and responsible members of society.
Role of a teacher
Teachers serve as facilitators, mentors, and inspirers, guiding students on their
learning journey and fostering a love for knowledge.
According to William Arthur Ward The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher
explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires." -
• In an eclectic approach, the role of the teacher evolves into that of a facilitator
or guide.
• Teachers provide support, encouragement, and resources to help students
navigate their learning journey.
• They create a nurturing environment where students feel empowered to
explore and express themselves.

• One of the premises of eclecticism is that teaching should serve learners not
methods. Thus, teachers should feel free in choosing techniques and
procedures inside the classroom. There is no ideal approach to language
learning. Each one has its merits and demerits.
Methods of Instruction
Instructional methods should be varied and interactive, engaging students through
experiential learning, collaborative activities, and meaningful projects. According to
Benjamin Franklin Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me
and I learn.
• Eclecticism encourages the use of diverse teaching methods and strategies.
• This may include lectures, discussions, hands-on activities, group projects,
and multimedia presentations.
• By incorporating various instructional approaches, educators can cater to
different learning styles and preferences.
Activities of Eclectic Approach
Eclectic approach combines listening, speaking, reading, and writing and
includes direct practice
An example of an eclectic program is when children spend a part of each day
receiving different therapies, such as structured teaching using methods of
applied behavior analysis (ABA), sensory integration and stimulation (brushing
and swinging), floortime procedures, music sessions, and free play with typical
peers.
Curriculum
• The eclectic curriculum is flexible and adaptable, allowing for the integration of
various subjects and topics.
• It focuses on interdisciplinary connections and real-world applications.
• According to William Butler Yeats “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the
lighting of a fire.”
• Educators have the freedom to customize the curriculum based on students'
interests, abilities, and learning goals.

• Explore a classroom where eclecticism is embraced, showcasing how diverse
philosophies are woven into the fabric of teaching and learning.
• Eclecticism in education offers a rich tapestry of philosophies, methods, and
practices, providing students with a dynamic and meaningful learning
experience.
• Let us embrace eclecticism and nurture the next generation of thinkers,
innovators, and lifelong learners.
