ECLECTICISM
What is Eclecticism?
Eclecticism in education involves the integration of diverse philosophies, theories,
and methods to create a comprehensive learning experience. According to (Iscan,
2017). This approach combines the principles of various methods and approaches
of teaching a language depending on the lesson objectives and individual
differences of students. Eclecticism is a conceptual approach that does not hold
rigidly to a single paradigm or set of assumptions, but instead draws upon multiple
theories, styles, or ideas to gain complementary insights into a subject, or applies
different theories in particular cases.
Goal of Eclecticism in education
Education aims to cultivate creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving
skills, preparing students to adapt to an ever-changing world.
• The primary goal of education within an eclectic framework is to foster holistic
development.
• This includes intellectual, emotional, social, and physical growth.
• Education aims to empower individuals to become critical thinkers, lifelong
learners, and responsible members of society.
Role of a teacher
Teachers serve as facilitators, mentors, and inspirers, guiding students on their
learning journey and fostering a love for knowledge.
According to William Arthur Ward The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher
explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires." -
• In an eclectic approach, the role of the teacher evolves into that of a facilitator
or guide.
• Teachers provide support, encouragement, and resources to help students
navigate their learning journey.
• They create a nurturing environment where students feel empowered to
explore and express themselves.
