GCSE French Speaking Examination

When will this take place?


This will take place after the Easter holidays at the end of Year 11
between the middle of April and the start of May. Your teacher will
let you know the exact date and time before the Easter holidays.

What do I have to do?


1. 12 minutes of preparation time to prepare your answers to the
role play and photo card.
2a. A role play (15 marks – 2 minutes) – 5 tasks which you can
prepare in advance. You will have to ask 1 question (?) and answer 1
unprepared question (!).
2b. Discussion of a photo card (15 marks – Foundation 2 minutes,
Higher 3 minutes) – 5 questions about one photograph on one of the
three GCSE themes. The first three are printed on the card and can
be prepared in advance.
2c. General conversation (30 marks – Foundation 3-5 minutes, Higher
5-7 minutes) - Questions about the other two GCSE themes. You can
choose which one you do first. During this part of the exam you must
ask one question of your teacher.

What must I do to succeed?


1. Learn thoroughly …
… question words so that you can understand what you are being
asked!
… the different answer patterns to respond to questions.
… the most common time phrases and verb patterns in present,
past and future tenses.
… how to express opinions and give a reason why.
2. Prepare your answers carefully and try to include a wide range of
vocabulary, opinions, connectives, intensifiers and three different
time frames.

3. Practise asking questions using ‘tu’ and ‘vous’.


4. Practise role plays, photo cards and the general conversation
aloud. DO NOT BE AFRAID TO TALK!!!

THIS PART OF THE EXAM WILL LAST FOR ONLY 7-9 MINUTES
(FOUNDATION TIER) AND 10-12 MINUTES (HIGHER TIER) AND
IS WORTH 25% OF THE OVERALL GRADE. IT IS IN OUR
CONTROL. IF YOU WORK HARD IN CLASS YOU WILL BE ABLE
TO GET A GOOD GRADE IN THIS IMPORTANT SKILL.
