Real and apparent thickness

To find the refractive index of glass using a


travelling microscope, follow these steps:
Adjust the travelling microscope to
get sufficient light and make the
base horizontal.
2. Adjust the eyepiece for clear
visibility of the cross wire.
3. Determine the vernier constant for
the vertical scale of the microscope.
4. Mark a point P on the microscope's
base using black ink.
5. Place the glass slab with the least
thickness over the markP.
6. Focus on the cross mark and record
the reading R1 onthe vertical scale.
7. Movethe microscope upward and
focus on the image of the cross
mark. Record the reading R2 on the
vertical scale.

8. Sprinkle a few particles of


lycopodium powder on the slab's

6. Focus on the cross mark and record


the reading R1 onthe vertical scale.
7. Move the microscope upward and
focus on the image of the cross
mark. Record the reading R2 on the
vertical scale.
8. Sprinkle a few particles of
lycopodium powder on the slab's
surface and focus on the particle
near S. Record the reading R3 on the
vertical scale.
9. Repeat steps 5-8 for different
thickness glass slabs.
10. Record the observations and
calculate the refractive index using
the formula:
