    Dialogue Between a Tree and a Human

    Written and Illustrated by the Students of Bet Sefer Solel School, Toronto, Ontario

    Tree: Well hi there! You’re pretty weird looking, why’s your trunk
    that funny pinkish colour instead of brown? And
    why does it split into two at the bottom!?

    Human: I’m a baby! I’m supposed to look like this. I don’t have
    a trunk, and these are my legs. If you ask me, you’re the funny
    looking one. You have green hair!
    Tree: Theses are my leaves, not hair. You’re pretty silly. What
    did you say you were again?
    Human: I’m a human baby, but not for long…check it
    out! I’m growing! It looks like you’re growing
    too… but we’re not the same are we? I don’t
    have funny green hair all over me…
    Tree: I am growing. Thanks for noticing! But no, we
    are definitely not the same thing. I’m a sapling, or
    a baby tree. The reason I’m
    starting to grow is because
    I’m getting care, water and
    all the beautiful sunshine I
    need to get big!
    Human: Well, we’re kind of the same. I need all those
    things too. But check me out now! I’m a teenager and –
    whoa! My body is changing – I’m noticing all these things
    I’ve never seen before!
    Tree: I guess we really are similar! I’ve got all these new
    branches and way more leaves. I’m like, so done with my
    days as a sapling.
    Human: All these exciting things are happening to
    me. I’m so much taller and stronger. I bet I could
    even lift YOU up! I’m ready to take on the world!
    Tree: Psht, come on now. You think you’re tall?
    Look at me! I’m fully grown standing about 20
    meters tall; 20 meters of pure handsome if I do say
    so myself. But I don’t think you could lift me
    up…my trunk is way more thick and I have tons of
    leaves. And did I mention acorns? Acorns!
    Human: Oh wow! Those acorns are pretty
    impressive.
    Tree: Yeah, I think they’re pretty snazzy. Hey did you
    know that some trees can live up to be 5000
    years old?
    Human: Wow…5000 years is a really long time. By
    now it feels as though I’m that old. I’m a senior
    now. You know that by the time you’re 5000
    years old you’ll probably see things that haven’t
    even been invented yet! Like flying cars! And
    people with personal jetpacks!
    Tree: I am
    definitely getting
    older and wiser as the years go by, but I’m not
    sure how I feel about people flying around. What if
    they get caught in my branches!
    Human: I guess you’ll just have to wait and see
    what happens with that. Gee, we’re clearly
    different…but we have a lot in common when it
    comes to the way we grow. Isn’t that interesting?
    Tree: Are you kidding? That’s awesome!
