Objective: To measure and compare the melting rates of ice cubes under different conditions.
Materials:
● Ice cubes
● Timer or clock
● Small bowls or cups (one for each student)
● Thermometer
● Salt
● Sugar
Procedure:
Control Group: Room Temperature
1. Place one ice cube in a bowl at room temperature.
2. Start the timer and record the time it takes for the ice cube to completely melt.
3. Repeat the process with another ice cube
Variable Group: Salt
1. Place another ice cube in a separate bowl.
2. Sprinkle a teaspoon of salt on the surface of the ice cube.
3. Start the timer and record the time it takes for the ice cube to melt completely.
4. Repeat the process with another ice cube
Variable Group: Sugar
1. Place another ice cube in a separate bowl.
2. Sprinkle a teaspoon of sugar on the surface of the ice cube.
3. Start the timer and record the time it takes for the ice cube to melt completely.
4. Repeat the process with another ice cube
After completing the experiment, record the result in table below and discuss as a group.
Analysis:
Record the result in the table below.
Table 1. Average Time Needed for Ice Cube to Melt
Surfaces Control Salt Sugar
4. What do you think is happening to the ice when you add salt or sugar?
5. How substances like sugar and salt can influence the melting point of ice?
Conclusion:
Observing and measuring the melting rate helps understand the impact of external factors on the
change of state. Understanding how different substances and conditions affect melting points is
crucial in various scientific and industrial applications. It allows scientists and engineers to
control and manipulate the physical properties of materials for specific purposes.
