Objective:

The object of the unit project is to provide a written assessment task for students to
complete.

Instructions:

Describe the best methods of work practices and display your knowledge of the subject
by answering the following questions. Provide your own opinions about what works
well and what does not work well. The answers should not be just one or two
sentences. Think about what you have learnt while studying this unit and apply that
knowledge to this assessment task.

Present your answers in a neat and professional format that is approved by your trainer
and include your name, date, the unit code and name, trainer’s name and student
details. We also remind you that submitting somebody else’s work is plagiarism and will

1. If you are currently working, then you should base this unit project on your current
workplace where you should have a good understanding of the business and its
sustainability practices and the potential for improvements in sustainability. If you are
not currently working, then choose a business and an industry that you are familiar with
and use that as the basis for this unit project.

This unit project is based on the Performance Criteria for this unit and as this unit
applies to individuals with management responsibilities, you will need to approach
the unit project from the point of view that you have sustained management
responsibilities in the business and are in a management position in the business. The
standard of your answers and the way your unit project is presented will need to reflect
that position.

A. Describe the business, the industry that the business operates in and the main
products and services the business offers.
B. Describe the main sustainability issues that affect that business and the key
sustainability issues that business will need to address, where is their potential
for the greatest impact on sustainability.
C. Develop and describe three performance indicators to measure sustainability
outcomes of the business.
D. Describe how you would consult with stakeholders and set targets for those three
performance indicators.
E. Describe who you would assign responsibilities for those three performance
indicators and why you would choose those people or positions for those
responsibilities.
F. Develop or update a sustainability policy for that business.
G. Develop at least one procedure that the business can implement to reduce the
use of energy or water.
H. Develop at least one procedure that the business could implement that would
reduce the use of resources, raw materials or ingredients.
I. Describe and discuss the use of toxic materials and hazardous chemicals at the
business and ways that the business could reduce or eliminate the use of these
substances. (For example, fuel, lead, acids, strong alkaline substances,
chlorine-based products, paint products and thinners, poisons, or pesticides)
J. Describe and discuss how that business could or does engage in ‘Cycle of Life’
planning. (For example, design a product so it can be recycled, design a long life
cycle, design so it can be repaired rather than replaced, use biodegradable
materials that can decompose after being disposed of).
K. Describe the records this business would keep that related to sustainability
outcomes of the business.
L. Describe and discuss a continuous improvement model for the business
regarding sustainability issues, including a review process.
