Assessment Task 2 - Skills Test
Skills Test:

This assessment task requires the student to measure, support and find opportunities to improve the
sustainability of work practices.

This assessment task will be completed at your training organisation.

The training organisation must ensure that the student has access to the following resources:

 Training organisation
 Computer lab
 Workstation
 Printer

Current scenario:

You are working as a Sustainability officer in your training organisation. Your training organisation
wants to implement sustainable work practices. These sustainable work practices will be focused on:

 Energy usage
 Paper usage
 Water usage

The organisation also wants to ensure that they comply with the sustainability legislation, regulations,
standards and organisational sustainability policies and procedures. These include:

Sustainability legislation, regulations, standards

 Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999

 Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Regulations 2000
 Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001)
 Energy Management Systems (ISO 50001)

Sustainability policies and procedures excerpt

The organisation recognises that businesses can have a negative impact on the environment. The
organisation is committed to finding ways to reduce the impact of our work. As part of our
sustainability policies and procedures, we will:

 Recycle as much waste material as possible.

 Avoid the use of paper wherever possible—for example, sending invoices and quotes via e-mail
as PDF files.
 Recycling equipment that is no longer of use to the company. For example, giving away items
such as computers and printers that we no longer use.
 Keep energy usage low. For example, making use of low energy light bulbs throughout and
ensuring that computers are on hibernation mode and are shut down after work.
 Reuse waste paper (from the printer) where possible, making use of the blank side for notes,
etc.
 Purchase products made with recycled paper. For example, paper towels, printer paper

 Purchase products with a lower environmental impact—for example, environmentally safe soaps
and detergents.
 Avoid unnecessary travel by making use of instant messaging, video and audio conferencing,
telephone, and e-mail.

The organisation has given you the responsibility to measure, support and find opportunities to improve
the sustainability of work practices.

Task:

This assessment task requires you to participate in three (3) sustainable work practices. You will be
required to measure, support and find opportunities to improve the sustainability of work practices.
This includes:

 Identifying the benefits of sustainable work practices and areas of improvement for sustainable
practices in the workplace
 Identifying and applying sustainability legislation and organisational sustainability policies and
procedures
 Participating in and supporting discussions for improved resource efficiency processes
 Identifying, measuring and documenting usage of resources.
 Collaborating with team members to develop suggestions for improving workplace sustainability
practices.

To demonstrate the skills and ability to measure, support and find opportunities to improve the
sustainability of work practices, you need to complete the following activities:

 Activity 1: Conduct a resource audit

 Activity 2: Identify workplace environmental hazards and report any breaches
 Activity 3: Collaborate with team members to develop suggestions for improving workplace
sustainability practices

Activity 1: Conduct a resource audit

This part of the activity requires you to conduct a resource audit for the following three (3) areas of
sustainable work practices:

 Energy usage
 Paper usage
 Water usage

When conducting the energy audit, you must ensure that you identify and apply sustainability
legislation and organisational sustainability policies and procedures.

To do so, you are required to complete the steps given in the checklist below and place a tick mark
against each step once completed.

You must also complete the templates associated with each step as given in the checklist.

Three (3) sustainable work practices in own work role as a Sustainability officer

1. Implementing Energy-Efficient Practices: As a Sustainability Officer, one of the

sustainable paintings practices you may implement is the usage of power-efficient
home equipment and practices. This can consist of switching to LED lights, the use
of power-efficient computers and appliances, and inspiring employees to show off
lighting fixtures and computer systems when now not in use.

Step-with the aid of-step implementation:

1- Conduct an strength audit to identify regions in which electricity is being wasted.
2- Replace old home equipment and mild bulbs with energy-green ones.
3- Implement rules that inspire energy conservation, consisting of turning off
lighting fixtures and computers while not in use.

2. Promoting Waste Reduction: Another sustainable work exercise is promoting

waste reduction. This can be performed by using implementing recycling
applications, encouraging employees to use reusable objects, and reducing paper
use via digitizing documents.

Step-by using-step implementation:

1-Set up recycling boxes within the office and educate personnel on what can be
recycled.
2- Encourage personnel to bring their own reusable cups, plates, and utensils.
3- Digitize documents to lessen paper use and inspire personnel to print double-
sided whilst vital.

3.Encouraging Sustainable Commuting: Encouraging employees to apply sustainable

commuting strategies can also be a sustainable paintings exercise. This can
encompass promoting carpooling, cycling, strolling, or using public transportation.

Step-by using-step implementation:

1-Set up a carpooling program or offer incentives for employees who carpool.
2- Provide secure motorcycle storage for employees who motorcycle to paintings.
3- If possible, offer bendy work hours or far flung work options to lessen
commuting.

Areas of improvement and resource inefficiencies, considering the resource audit

conducted (Any three)

Energy Inefficiencies

The resource audit may have identified areas of high energy consumption or inefficient
energy practices. This could include instances of lights or equipment being left on
unnecessarily, outdated or energy-intensive machinery, or poor insulation leading to heat
or cooling loss. Implementing energy-efficient measures such as upgrading to energy-
saving equipment, implementing occupancy sensors, and improving insulation can help
reduce energy waste and lower operational costs.

Version Number: 1.0 Unit Code: BSBSUS201 Page 9 of 18

Excessive Paper Usage

The resource audit may have revealed significant paper consumption, such as excessive
printing, copying, or paper-based documentation. To address this, you can promote
paperless practices by encouraging digital documentation, implementing electronic
signatures, and utilizing online collaboration tools. Providing training to employees on
paper-saving techniques, setting default printer settings to double-sided printing, and
implementing centralized document management systems can further reduce paper waste.

Water Waste

The resource audit may have identified water inefficiencies, such as leaks, inefficient
water fixtures, or excessive water consumption in certain areas. Implementing water-
saving practices such as installing low-flow faucets and toilets, repairing leaks promptly,
and educating employees on water conservation can significantly reduce water waste.
Additionally, collecting and reusing rainwater for non-potable purposes, such as
landscaping or cleaning, can further optimize water usage and minimize reliance on fresh
water sources.

Benefits of implementing sustainable work practices for identified areas of improvement

(30-50 words)

Reduced energy costs and carbon footprint, increased operational efficiency, improved
waste management, lower paper costs, improved environmental stewardship, and a
strengthened reputation as a socially responsible organisation are all advantages of
implementing sustainable work practises for the areas of improvement that have been
identified.

Activity 2: Identify workplace environmental hazards and report any breaches

This activity requires you to conduct physical worksite review and identify workplace environmental
hazards.

The following areas of the training organisation should be inspected:

 Computer lab
 Printer area

When conducting the physical worksite review, you must:

• Inspect the areas specified above.

• Identify workplace environmental hazards.
o Consider environmental regulations and standards (Refer to the information given in the
current scenario)
• Look for any potential breaches or potential breaches.
• Report any hazards, breaches and potential breaches to Supervisor using the ‘Hazard report
form’.

Paper trash mismanagement causes deforestation, energy
use, and landfill waste. The company's paper costs rise.

This story includes photos of overflowing general waste

containers full of paper.

Remedy Suggestions: Clear signs and paper recycling bins

in the printer area. Teach employees about paper
recycling and correct use and disposal.

Additional Comments: Reducing paper waste and recycling

helps boost the company's sustainability and cost savings.
