BSBSUS501 Develop workplace policy and procedures for


sustainability
This document comprises of 3 parts:
• Part One – Unit and Assessment Overview
• Part Two – Topics Covered
• Part Three – Assessment Tasks

Part One – Unit and Assessment Overview provides you with an overview of the knowledge
and skills that you need to demonstrate in the assessment tasks. The Unit and Assessment
Overview also provides you with information about the assessment conditions, the assessor’s
role, changes to the assessment procedure that can be made to accommodate your needs and
instructions to students including how to submit your assessment task.

Part Two – Topics Covered provides you with an overview of the key topics covered during
your workshop. These topics are still covered in the workbook by distance-based learning
students.

Part Three – Assessment Tasks consists of questions, case studies and work-based activities.
These tasks are used to demonstrate that you meet the requirements as detailed in Part One –
Unit and Assessment Overview.
PART ONE: UNIT AND ASSESSMENT OVERVIEW

Performance evidence
Evidence of the ability to:

Scope and develop organisational policies and procedures that comply with legislative
requirements and support the organisation’s sustainability goals covering at a minimum:
• minimising resource use
• resource efficiency
• reducing toxic material and hazardous chemical use
• employing life cycle management approaches
• continuous improvement
• plan and implement sustainability policy and procedures including:
• agreed outcomes
• performance indicators
• activities to be undertaken
• assigned responsibilities
• record keeping, review and improvement processes
• consult and communicate with relevant stakeholders to generate engagement with
sustainability policy development, implementation and continuous improvement
• review and improve sustainability policies.

Knowledge Evidence
The candidate must be able to demonstrate the following knowledge to effectively complete the
tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit, and to manage tasks and
reasonably foreseeable contingencies in the context of the work role:
• outline the environmental or sustainability legislation, regulations and codes of practice
applicable to the organisation identify internal and external sources of information and
explain how they can be used to plan and develop the organisation’s sustainability policy
• explain policy development processes and practices
• outline organisational systems and procedures that relate to sustainability
• outline typical barriers to implementing policies and procedures in an organisation and
possible strategies to address them.

Assessment Conditions
Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates
consistent performance of typical activities experienced in the workforce development –
workplace relations field of work and include access to:
• relevant legislation, regulations, standards and codes
• relevant workplace documentation and resources
• case studies and, where possible, real situations
• interaction with others.

Reasonable adjustments
Your Assessor may be able to make adjustments to your assessment based on special needs
you may have or if you are a distance learning student. Please ask your Trainer if you feel that
modifications to this assessment is required.

Role of the Trainer/Assessor
• Your Trainer/Assessor will:
• answer any questions you might have about the assessment
• negotiate assessment activities if reasonable adjustment is required
• inform you of any variations to the assessment which may be required if you have any
special needs or if you are a distance-based learner
• assess your competency by making judgements about the evidenced presented in line with
the rules of evidence: validity, authenticity, currency and sufficiency
• give you feedback on the outcomes of the assessment process
• counsel you on the outcomes of the assessment including advising you of your right of
appeal if you disagree with the assessment decision.
• help you address the work health and safety requirements of the assessment setting, if
appropriate.

Instructions for students
In order to successfully meet the requirements of this unit you are required to undertake all
assessment tasks. Each of these assessment tasks may have a series of activities or questions
that require you to complete.

Please note that at Advanced Diploma level it is expected that the questions will be answered in
a manner that reflects significant understanding of the theory associated with the unit of
competency. You are required to elaborate upon the answer sufficiently articulating your
understating of the underpinning knowledge required for this unit of competency.

As a guide – each question will generally require 2 – 3 paragraphs to effectively address


requirements. In some cases, this may be more. If you, in the course of answering a question,
rely upon a text, document, webpage or other source of information when answering a question,
you must make reference to where this information came from.

The number of lines are not indicative of the length of your answer, they are just there as
a guide to commence writing your answer.

Submitting your Assessment and Due Dates
Your Trainer will advise you of the due date for each assessment. Please submit your
assessment by the due date. The process for submitting assessments is provided on the
assignment coversheet on page 1 of this document.

Feedback on your Assessment


Your Trainer will mark your assessment within 4 weeks after the due date. Your Trainer will
provide you with feedback about your assessment. Your result will either be:
• Competency Achieved – you passed OR
• Competency Not Yet Achieved.

If your result in ‘competency not yet achieved’ you will be given an opportunity to improve your
assessment. Your Trainer will inform you of the skill or knowledge gaps in your assessment. You
will need to resubmit your assessment with the corrections or redo the practical exercise until
you achieve the ‘Competency Achieved’ result. Any student who plagiarises or cheats will be
given a ‘not yet competent’ result and will be required to resubmit their assessment again and
may also be required to answer verbal questions.

PART THREE: ASSESSMENT TASKS
Before you commence this assessment, please read the student declaration on the front page. 
It is important that you are ready for assessment and understand the assessment process.
Please speak with your Trainer if you have any questions. 

Assessment one – Short Answer Questions

If you use your own business, include copies of all documentation to which you refer to
for your Assessor.

Assessment Task One requires you to develop and implement a workplace


sustainability policy and to modify the policy to suit changed circumstances. To
enable you to do this, you must answer the following questions.

1a Outline the environmental or sustainability legislation, regulations and codes of


practice applicable to your organisation. Identify internal and external sources of
information and explain how they can be used to plan and develop the organisation’s
sustainability policy.

1b Explain the processes used to develop policy and practices.

Ans:The processes used to develop policy and practices are:


Planning:Planning stage involves Identification of the problem or need, Businesses develop
policies and procedures in anticipation of a market or response to a need.
Development:The development of policy and procedures should reflect a similar approach to
project management guidelines. To establish a workable and quality policy and practices may
follow the following pathway.
Review:This stage will include a review of the draft policies and procedure document, as well as
recommendations and approval. The format of the draft document will be classified and
numbered by the administrative services analyst.
Implementation:Once the board of governors approves the draft document, it is returned to the
administration services analyst, who will generate a final copy of the policy and procedure
document. The policyholder will then sign the document. The administration services analyst
will retain final copies of the policies and procedures and note the dates approved by the
executive team and board of governors.

1c Outline organisational systems and procedures that relate to sustainability.

Assessment Two - Develop a Sustainability Policy and Procedures

Assessment Two requires you to develop a policy for workplace sustainability within
your organisation or using the model supplied by your Assessor.

Your strategy must:

• Define the scope of your sustainability policy


• Include information from a range of sources

• Identify stakeholders affected by the policy and state how they were consulted.

• Include appropriate strategies in policy at all stages of work for minimising

employing life cycle management approaches

• Make recommendations for policy options based on likely e ff e c t i v e n e s s ,


timeframes and cost

• Reflect the organisation’s commitment to sustainability as an integral part of


business planning and as a business opportunity

• Method of implementation.

Assessment Task Three - Presentation

Assessment Task Three requires you to communicate your policy to other members of staff
within your organisation. To achieve this, you must prepare a presentation that you will
make to the training group acting as management outlining how you propose to:

• Promote your workplace sustainability policy including expected outcomes (if


possible, include examples of how you will promote the policy)

• Inform those involved in implementing the policy as to outcomes expected,


activities to be undertaken and responsibilities assigned.

You will then orally deliver this presentation to your Assessor and training group. You
may use PowerPoint slides to assist you in delivering your message. Include copies of
your presentation and any support materials that you use with the assessment for your
Assessor. On completion of the role play, your Assessor must be satisfied that you are
able to effectively communicate a sustainability policy.
Assessment Task Three - Observation Checklist (Assessor to complete)

Assessment Task Four – Implement the Policy

Assessment Task Four requires you to implement your strategy. Please answer the
questions below.

4a How will the policy will be implemented and who has responsibility for what
duties in the resource efficiencies plan?

4b How will continuous improvement will be measured, corrected and be


continuous?

4c How will the recording and tracking systems work and what the expected
outcomes are hoped to achieve?
4d How will failures or disappointing outcomes be dealt with?

4e What measures will be taken to ensure continual feedback to allow further


improvements?
Assessment Task Five - Implement and Review Policy

Assessment Task Five requires you to implement your policy and establish the record
keeping that will allow you to measure the effectiveness. If you are completing your
Assessment on an activity in your own business, you must provide a copy of all the
documents to which you refer for your Assessor.

Discuss how you plan to record and report environmental impacts and opportunities. You
must use software systems for recording and filing documentation for measurement of
current usage and include copies of these records as part of your assessment. You must
also use word processing and other basic software for interpreting the charts, flowcharts,
graphs and other visual data and information.

You must:

• State your outcomes and provide feedback to key personnel and stakeholders

• Investigate successes or otherwise of the policy

• Identify trends that may require remedial action and use to promote continuous
improvement of performance

• Modify policy and or procedures as required to ensure improvements are made.

Assessment Six – Learner Journal

Student’s comments on what they learnt completing this unit and how it applies to their
workplace or to their daily activities.
