OBJECTIVES

James, can you read our

objectives?
(The teacher flashes the material
on the screen.)
Yes sir.

At the end of the

lesson, you are
expected to:
1. Cite examples of
astronomical phenomena
known to astronomers
before the advent of
telescopes.
2. Identify who invented
telescope and explain it
functions in
astronomical events
3. List some of your
beliefs about astronomical
events
B. Reviewing previous lesson or Before we proceed to our next
presenting the new lesson topic, anyone among you can tell
me what was the last lesson
yesterday?
Yes, Sir.
Go ahead, Jk.
Sir, we discussed about the
Other members of the solar
system.
Thanks, Jk! It’s good to hear that
you can still recall what has been
discussed yesterday.
C. Establishing a purpose for the Okay, I guess you are ready for
lesson our class this morning.

So how’s your day? It is good so

far?
Yes, Sir!
That’s good to know. Before we
start our discussion, may I ask
somebody to read the lesson
objectives?
Sir!
(reads the reading material)
a. Identify who invented the
first telescope,
b. cite examples of
astronomical phenomena
known to astronomers
before the advent of
telescopes, and;
c. list some of your beliefs
about astronomical events.
Thanks, Marie!
D. Presenting examples/
instances of the new lesson
E. Discussing new concepts and (Make two groups)
practicing new skills #1 Now, I want you to cite an
astronomical event you know.
Each group will provide at least
two and present the cited events.
1. Solar and Lunar
eclipses
2. Comets
3. Meteor showers
4. Phases of the moon
(the students will provide
brief explanation and how
frequently these events
occur)
Class, have you seen a
telescope?
Yes, sir!

During the night, can you see

sky using a telescope?
Yes, sir!

What do you see?

Stars, sir.
What else?
Sir, moon.
Very good!

Are you aware who invented the

first telescope? Sir, Galileo Galilei.
Okay, good.
Who wants to read?
Sir.
Yes, Rr!
(The teacher flashes the material
on the screen.)
To make it clear. Many
people believe that Galileo
Galilei was the first
astronomer who invented
and build the telescope.
However, the first telescope
was made by Hans
Lippershey in the early
1600s. Lippershey was a
German-Dutch glass maker,
and he managed to reduce
the amount of light in his
telescope while focusing it.
His model inspired other
scientists to work on
perfecting the
telescope.
Very good, Jeffrey.

After hearing about the “Danish

perspective glass” in 1609,
Galileo constructed his own
telescope.

Class, did you get it?

We got it sir!
Sky seemed to be very important
to our ancestors. It serves as
clock and an indicator whether to
do various activities, like
planting of crops and navigation.
Before the telescopes were
invented, what do you think were
the examples of astronomical
events that were visible in our
naked eyes?
Sir!
Yes, Guy?
Stars, sir.
Correct!

Beng? The sun and moon sir.

What else? Sir, star formations.

Go ahead, Kevin? Meteor shower, sir.

Very good.

Before the advent of telescope,

astronomers observed the sky by
their naked eyes or through the
use of improvised instruments.

Some of their observations

include the position and
movements of moon and planets,
eclipse, sun, stars, comets,
meteors and supernova.

F. Discussing new concepts and Where does sunrise occur?

practicing new skills #2 East, sir.
West, sir.

Where does sunset occur?

Alright!

Next is the moon. What is all

about the moon, Den?
(The teacher displays reading
materials on the screen.)
Sir, the moon is the:
 Only natural satellite
of the earth.
 The position of the
moon changes all
throughout the day.
 During lunar
eclipse, they
observed that
earth’s shadow is
round.
 Moon receives light
Thanks, Den. from the sun.
Who is the real first man who
landed on the moon?

Very good, Ky. Sir, Neil Armstrong.

Neil Armstrong and Edwin
“Buzz” Aldrin were the first of
the 12 human beings to walk on
the moon.

What are the 4 major phases of

the moon?

Yes, Hop? Sir!

New moon, first quarter,

That’s right. full moon and third quarter.
Have you seen a lunar eclipse
before?

Ben, what is a lunar eclipse? Yes, sir!

Sir, lunar eclipse is the one

in which the earth is in
You’ve got it! between the sun.
Lunar eclipse occurs during
nighttime.

Can you explain what is a solar

eclipse?

Sir, solar eclipse is the one

in which the moon is in
between the earth and the
You’re right! sun.
Solar eclipse occurs during
daytime.

Next, who wants to read about

planet?
(The teacher displays reading
materials on the screen.)

Sir, the planet.

 Position of the planet
 Dimension
 Motion
 Orbit
Thank you!

In our solar system, how many Eight sir!

planets do we have?

Who wants to enumerate these Sir.

planets?
Mercury, Mars, Venus,
Yes, ER? Earth, Jupiter, Saturn,
Uranus, Neptune and
Plato.

That’s correct.

Planets were also observed even

without telescope. Most of the
observations made during the
time of Tycho Brahe, by using
his observatory, with his
protractor like instruments he
observed the position, motion
and orbits of the planets as well
as measure their dimensions.

Under the planets we have

Venus, Mars and Mercury.

What is planet Venus? Jeg?

Please read!
(The teacher displays reading
materials on the screen.) Sir, Venus is the:
 Third brightest
object in the sky
 Its position
determines when to
start the battle
 Observations were
made in Caracol and
Chichen Itza
observatories.

Very good, Jeg.

For instance, Ancient Mayan

astronomers used the observation
in Caracol and Chichen Itza to
observe the movement and
position of Venus.

The windows of Caracol were

aligned to the position of Venus
such that its rising and setting
can be clearly observed.

The position of the Venus served

as an indication when to start
battle. Sir.

How about Mars and

Mercury? Yes, Jeff? Mars

(The teacher displays reading The orbit on Mars is
materials on the screen.) elliptical not
circular
Mercury
 Moving against the
background of the
sun

Thank you, Jeff!

Kepler, assistant of Brahe,

discovered that the orbit of Mars,
as well as the other planets, are
elliptical not circular. On the
other hand, the observation
regarding the movement of the
Mercury as it passes against the
background of the sun supported
the claim that the sun is the Mars, sir.
center of the universe.

If someday Earth do not exist

because of some issues, on what Yes sir.
planet do you think we can live?
Since Mars has no oxygen,
Can a person live on Mars? How? if you tried to breath on the
surface of mars without a
spacesuit supplying your
oxygen you would die.
That’s why you need an
enough air to be able to live
there.

Nice answer, Leigh.

Which of the seven planets is the Venus, sir!

hottest?

Why not mercury, since it is Sir, even though Mercury is

closer to the sun? closer to the sun, Venus is
the hottest planet in out
solar system. Its thick
atmosphere is full of the
greenhouse gas
carbon dioxide and it has
clouds of sulfuric acid.

Great answer, Angela.

Because the atmosphere traps

heat, making it feel like a furnace
on the surface.
Uranus, sir!
Which planet is the coldest?
The atmosphere of this
Why is Uranus the coldest planet? planet is similar to Jupiter’s
and Saturn’s but it contains
more “ices”.

Exactly!

Even though Uranus is a billion

miles closer to the sun than
Neptune.
Sir!
Why is Pluto no longer a planet?

Yes, Audraey?
(The teacher displays reading Pluto is not a planet because
materials on the screen.) the International
Astronomical Union (IAU)
requires certain criteria that
it does not meet. As of
2021, Pluto is a dwarf
planet that hasn't
cleared its
neighboring region.

Very good, Audraey.

Pluto is known to be the biggest

object in the Kuiper Belt,
surrounded by other dwarf
planets and icy bodies. Because
it is the most prominent object in
the area, it is called "King of the
Kuiper Belt" by many.
None, sir.
Do you have any clarifications?

Okay, that’s all for today’s class.

H. Practical applications of Which is one important, the sun
concepts and skills in daily or the moon? Moy?
living Sir, the sun because it gives
enough light than the moon.
Great answer!

What myth did you know about

the moon?
Sir, there’s prevailing myth
that major surgeries should
be scheduled according to
your astrological forecast.
according to one
hypothesis, that’s because
the tides could have an
effect on your blood flow.
While full moon does tug at
ocean tides, it doesn’t affect
your blood flow.
Very good, Rode!

If you were given a chance to

live in other planet, what planet
is this?
Mars because it is the most
similar planet to Earth in
the solar system, sir.
That’s good.
I. Making generalizations and Who wants to read the summary
abstractions about the of our topic for today?
