Bioenzymes

Alternatives to lead chemical free life

Bioenzymes
• Bio-enzymes (BEs) are organic solutions produced through
fermentation of organic waste (Fruit & vegetable peels, flowers),
sugar/jaggary/molasses and water.
• It takes 60–90 days to ferment organic waste.
• Bioenzymes are also known as eco-enzymes/garbage enzymes.
• Bioenzymes have naturally good bacteria and sweet-sour smell as
result of fermentation.
• Bioenzymes are a perfect way to manage your chemicals and could
be alternative to almost all kind of daily use of toxic chemicals e.g.
washing & cleaning, bathing, gardening sprays etc.
• Value added bio-products can be produced from the organic waste
which also reduce the emission of greenhouse gas and climate-
change.
Basic Science
• BEs is a complex organic substance of protein chains, minerals and
salts produced from the fermentation of water, organic solid waste
and sugars/molasses.
• In the fermentation process, sugars/molasses has been used as
substrate.
• BEs has been reported to possess protease, amylase and lipase
activity and pathogen inhibiting or pathogen killing property.
• Thus, it can be used in various processes involving protein,
carbohydrate and lipid degradation in the same way as commercial
hydrolytic enzyme.
• BEs also contain some amount of organic acids (acetic acid, lactic
acid, malic acid, oxalic acid and citric acid) but as it matures acetic
acid concentration increases due to anaerobic production
Recipe to DIY Bioenzymes
Recipe of Bioenzyme
Ingredients (1:3:10:15)
1 part of Jaggery
3 parts of fruit or vegetable or organic waste
10 parts of water
15 parts of container size (air tight plastic container)

Note: Use yeast as culture to fasten the

fermentation process

(e.g. for 2 liter air tight container take 100 gm

jaggery, 300 gm F&V waste, 1 liter water)
Recipe of Bioenzymes
• First time/batch, it takes 90 days without yeast. For successive
batches mother culture from first batch can be used and then
it will take 45-60 days or use yeast itself for the first batch to
prepare the bioenzymes with-in span of 45-60 days.
• In first one month open the lid of container for few seconds
once in 3-5 days to release the build-up gases.
• For successive second/third month open the lid of container
for few seconds once in 7-10 days to release the build-up
gases.
• Once bionezymes gets ready, bioenzymes can be filtered and
stored for unlimited time period in air-tight containers and
pulp in the bioenzymes can be used in compost pit or as
mother culture for successive batches.
Recipe of bioenzymes

*yeast fasten the process (1gm/ per liter water) of fermentation

and reduce the time of first batch from 90 days to 45-60 days.
Fermentation time-line

Final phase
Initial phase
In-making process
Formation of white creamy layer signs formation of good quality bioenzymes
Incase maggots appear, stir the liquid and air tight the container properly
Indication to Check whether
bioenzymes process ?
• After few days white colour mould/yeast starts developing
and floating on the surface.
• Other than white, developing of any colour indicates infection
of solution. Put some quantity of sugars and stir.
• Incase maggot appear in the container, add some sugars, stir
the liquid and air-tight the container properly. Maggots
develop due to air-loose containers.
• Sweet-sour vinegar like smell starts developing
• pH of ready bioenzymes is ~3.
• Organic waste with time starts settling at the surface and clear
bioenzymes appear
Precautionary Notes
Container should keep in cool and dry place with air tight.

Brown sugars or jaggery is recommend as they have more minerals that white
sugars.

If white mold/mould layer appears, stir the liquid.

If warm/maggots appears, add more sugars and stir.

Fruit based bio-enzymes smell good and give pleasant aroma than vegetable
residue based bio-enzymes so use more fruit wastage for aromatic BEs.

Citrus BEs are best in aroma. various ingredients are added and experimented to
brew numerous combinations of BEs.

After straining the solution, do not throw away the waste isolate, use it either as
fertilizer for garden or starting culture for next batch or grind and use as toilet
cleaner.
How to Use Bioenzymes
• Dilution factor of bioenzymes is 100-10000x as per
various uses.
• In general, for agriculture and gardening sprays dilution
factor is 50-100x means use 1 liter of bioenzyme in 50-100
liter of water.
• For home and body care and, cleaning and sanitation
dilution factor is 100-500x means 1 liter bioenzymes in
100-500 liters of water.
• For edible bioenzymes dilution factor is 1000x.
• For water purification dilution factor is 10000x means add
1 liter of bioenzymes in 10000 liter of water.
Agricultural uses/application
• Gardening and agriculture sprays (1-2% foliar spray)
once in 7-10 days for vegetables and flowers, once in 15 days for
other crops and fruit orchards
• Water quality enhancer in storage tank/ponds (1 liter bioenzymes
in 10000 liter water)
Benefits
• Shown good results against various pest and diseases
• Promote overall yield and fruit quality, appearance
• Stop flower and flower drop and act as bio-stimulant
• Promote soil biological activity, fertilization, buffer soil pH for better
absorption of soil nutrients
• Improve the health of soil and reduce the soil pH
Domestic, body care, and others uses
• Bathing and cleaning
• Shampoo (after adding amla, shikakayi, soapnut etc)
• Laundary and other washing e.g. car, dish wash (after
adding soapnut/reetha, wood ash)
• Floor, toilet and other cleaning (after adding reetha)
• Handwash (after adding essential oils, soapnut,
shikakayi, tulsi-neem extract etc)
• Disinfectants and mosquito repellents ( after adding
essential oils, soap nut, neem oil).
Common benefits
• Bioenzymes are alternative to almost all daily-use chemicals.
• These are human, animal, water, soil, air friendly.
• These have natural beneficial bacteria which enhance the life-
forces and positive aura.
• Still being acidic in nature but do not damage the skin like
other cleaning and washing chemicals.
• Possess huge socio-economic, cultural and small scale
industry potential.
• Organic waste could be handled/managed at source
converting all peels and pulp.

Projects with Schools
• Sharing know-how and DIY bioenzymes to school children under School
Edible Garden programme.
• Promoting entrepreneur skills and pushing students to start bioenzymes
brand and market bioenzymes.
