Narrow topic: The trend of using dating apps for adolescents

4. Results:

I designed the questionnaire and distributed the survey to 200 students with 87 males and 113
females from International School of Banking Academy. All data were collected to answer 3
research questions: “What are the popular dating apps?”; “What are the expectations of users for
the app?” and “What are the dangerous problems they face with online dating?” I have
distributed the survey in an online form through a google form. As I expected, the results showed
not only the popularity of dating apps, their expectations about the apps but also the dangers they
faced.

It is worth noting that most people between the ages of 18 and 30 have used dating apps. As can
be seen from Figure 1, the proportion of people aged 18 to 20 was the highest. From 18 to 20, the
number of users was slightly less than that of non-users; meanwhile, the figure of 21 to 25-year-
olds followed an opposite trend. At this age, the number of people who have used applications
was almost twice as high as those who have not. From 26 to 30, the proportion is the smallest but
the number of people who have used apps was 1%, which was 1% lower than those who have
not used it.

In terms of popularity, most of the people who participated in the survey knew about the Tinder
app the most. Tinder had a fairly large number of votes with 85 votes; while, Bumble was the
second-highest application but only 33 votes. Meanwhile, OkCupid and Match had the same
votes, at 29 and 28 respectively. Finally, there were HER and other apps that were not popular.

Figure 3 illustrates the reasons why users look to dating apps. Looking at the details, the top
reason was out of curiosity because they just wanted to know anything interesting about dating
apps. In the meantime, many people who wanted to find a serious relationship had the second-
highest number of votes, 55 votes, which was slightly more than that of looking for a casual
relationship. The last factor that they wanted to find dating apps was that they felt bored and
wanted to find something new.

It is noticeable that people were concerned about the dangers they might face when using dating
apps. The most important reason was that they feared being tricked into sharing private or
sensitive information, at 155 votes. The second was online harassment with 126 votes and then
victims of scams with 109 votes. Furthermore, using dating apps limits social interactions and
risks online accounts being hacked.
