Case Study
Due to open in 2024, the 50-year-old structure (B201) is an
‘adaptive reuse’ project that will set new benchmarks for
low carbon design and sustainability. It will send less waste
to landfill, create less pollution through its construction and
operation, and provide healthy, comfortable, and functional
spaces for the many thousands of students and staff who
will work, learn, research, and socialise within its walls.
The design also focuses on acoustic performance,

Energy in RWTH Aachen

Electricity consumption of the RWTH Aachen shares 2019

The majority (80%) of the purchased district heating is fed into an internal University network to supply the buildings
in Campus Mitte and Campus Hörn, where it covers two-thirds of the heating energy requirements. The waste heat
from the electricity production at the Wüllnerstraße combined heat and power plant provides the remaining third.

At the Melaten expansion site, a lower proportion (10%) of the heating energy supply is covered by district heating,
with the majority (90%) being provided by the natural-gas-powered boiler in the heating and power station.

Mobility in RWTH -Mitte
Opportunities and Weaknesses
WEAKNESSES AND THREATS:
Busy streets, high traffic
Visible but un-useful squares
Lack of urban furniture and sitting areas
Monofunctional areas, unsafe at dark
Cold surfaces and lack of green surfaces
Climatically uncomfortable areas

STRENGTHS AND
OPPORTUNITIES:
Location, integrated with the city
A high density of people
Open big squares
Connection points of campus and city
Central point of the university
An Open Campus

For

Life-Long Learning
Target Groups

An open campus can cater to working professionals and

individuals who are interested in continuous learning and
personal development. Highlight the availability of courses,
workshops, and resources that can benefit professionals and
students in various fields.

An open campus as a welcoming and inclusive space for older

adults and retirees to engage in lifelong learning. Offer
specialized programs, classes, and activities that cater to their
interests, such as health and wellness, arts and crafts, technology
training, or cultural events.

An Open campus as a family-friendly environment can offer

educational and recreational activities for children. This could
include workshops, summer camps, storytelling sessions, or
interactive exhibits that encourage learning and creativity.

An open campus as a sanctuary for both learning and

wildlife. By designing green spaces and habitats that promote
biodiversity and attract local wildlife, such as birds,
butterflies, and even squirrels.
