Reading
Learning: the Finnish way
Students obey the rules, teachers are respected,
students attend lessons for the least amount of
hours but still get the best qualifications. So why
are schools in Finland so successful?
Students don’t have to start school until the age of
seven. They learn through playing and exploring
rather than having to be in a classroom all day.
Each teacher has a group of fifteen to twenty
students that they look after and care for. Students
only have three to four classes a day, which means
that they have time to play outside whatever the
weather. They get some exercise and move around
in the fresh air.
Teachers don’t have to follow a curriculum. They
create their own exciting lessons. For example,
they have time for students to learn sewing,
cooking, cleaning and woodwork. Finnish students
do the least amount of homework in the world.
Students get the work done in class instead. The
teacher gives the students a suggested task, and if
they do it in class, they won’t need to do any
schoolwork at home.
