EXPERIMENT # 3
Electromagnet
Grade 5
I. PROBLEM: What factors make a strong electromagnet?
II.HYPOTHESIS:______________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________
III. MATERIALS:
• battery
• iron nail
• two pieces of copper wire with both ends uncovered
• electric tape
• metallic pins
IV. PROCEDURE:
1. Get the battery and the copper wire. Stick one uncovered end of a copper wire to
the positive and the other wire to the negative pole of the battery.
2. Get the iron nail. Coil both the copper wires from the head of the nail down to the
pointed part.
3. Place the pointed end of the iron nail on the metallic pins. Observe.
4. Decrease the number of turns in the coil and record the number of pins that can be
picked up.
B. GUIDE QUESTIONS:
2. Which of the two wires would make a stronger electromagnet, the thin wire or the thick wire?

______________________________________________________________________________
3. Which one would make the electromagnet stronger, is it by increasing or decreasing the
number of turns in the coil?
