=> « Vous êtes » means « You are » either for several people or for one person that you
address yourself to in a formal way.
Exercise: Translate these sentences to French.

1. I am the cellarman.
2. You are the clerk.
3. He is the waiter.
4. She is the waitress.
5. You (formal) are the pastry chef.
6. I am the barman.
7. He is the roaster.

In French, « THE » can be translated by « LE », « LA » or « LES »

• LE when the name following is male. Example: Le sommelier


• LA when the name following is female. Example: La serveuse
• LES when the name following is plural. Example: Les serveurs (The waiters)

Like in English, when a name is plural, it takes an S at the end.


Example: le serveur (the waiter)
les serveurs (the waiters)

Exercise: Translate these sentences to French.

1. We are the barmans.

3. They (female only) are the waitresses.
4. We are the clerks.
5. They (male + female) are the pastry chefs.
