Practice 1
You work for a medium-sized property company, Prime Property, which wants to
move into the luxury market. The company is interested in changing its image for this
move. You have 3 different images that you are trialing and have received market
research on these images. You have been asked to write a summary report for the
Managing Director, explaining and summarising the findings from your research and
indicating recommendations.

Focus group opinions Existing customer base survey

High-income earner group consisting of 1=Poor 5=Excellent
twelve people in the income bracket the
company wishes to move towards:

“The image of image 2 looks rather

cheap to me … I wouldn’t want to be
associated with it.”
“The second logo looks like it’s done
cheaply. I don’t know if I would trust a
company like that”
“Logo 1 looks serious… I quite like it.
But perhaps it needs a little more
color.”
“I don’t think design 3 stands out from
other designs of other companies. It
looks exactly the same.”
“I quite like Design 3. It’s the kind of
look that I am familiar with.”
“I think logo 2 stands out from all the
bright colors. The font is terrible though.
I’d expect to see it in a school.”

We have recently been undertaking research on new designs for our company,
including logo, font, and styles with the aim of moving into the luxury market. We
have 3 images for which we gathered opinions.

We surveyed our existing customers and also held a focus group with 12 high-income
earners of the bracket we are aiming to move into.

It is evident that the existing customer survey indicates that preference put design 2 as
the best option, followed by design 3, which did not gain strong opinions, and the least
popular option was Design 1, which was given more negative feedback.
The existing customers had a largely poor opinion of Design 1. Over 60% gave it a
poor or moderate rating in terms of the logo while it was 96% in terms of fonts and
styles. Design 2, however, was much preferred by survey participants. To be specific,
moderate to positive feedback constituted over 80% for both logo, styles and fonts.
Design 3 did not have strong positive or negative opinions, with most people rating
mid-rages.

The survey results have contrasted strongly with the focus group, who overall disliked
Design 2. Comments from the focus group on this design indicated that they felt it
looked cheap and childish, which was more suitable for school rather than the luxury
market. Design 1 was praised for its seriousness while Design 3 was the one that the
group felt familiar with. This can be a positive aspect but it was noted that the design
does not stand out.

In respect of the comments gained, we may best focus on Design 3 which did not
receive strong positive or negative feedback from both the existing customers and our
targeting focus group. This may prevent alienating our existing customers as well as
attracting new ones. It is worth reviewing how we can adapt this design to make it
more appealing.

Practice 2

Write a report summary of about 225 words.

We have recently been undertaking research on the new version of Chocomax

chocolate bar with the aim of introducing it to the market. We have gathered 7 main
opinions from the respondents.

We surveyed 500 existing customers who were given our new product version for
trial.
According to the survey, it is evident that the new chocolate version did not receive
preference from the customers compared to the original one in terms of size, taste, and
quality.

The majority of the survey participants showed a strong dislike of the size and taste of
the new product. They felt that the original one was much bigger and its taste was
better than the new version. Customers also indicated that they were unhappy with the
product quality, with three-thirds of those surveyed thinking that our luxury image has
been damaged because of the low product quality. In addition, nearly half of the
respondents said that the new recipes used cheaper ingredients which did not reflect
our usual luxurious taste. Furthermore, regarding price, 68% of survey responses
demonstrated that they would not buy this new version if it was charged higher, while
over a third of the participants admitted that they were ready to pay more to have a
higher quality product. At the same time, nearly none of the respondents preferred the
new flavor while just a quarter of them would like to see more flavors introduced to
the range.

With respect to the comments gained, we may best focus on improving the quality of
the new version before introducing it to the market by continuing to sell the original
product. This may ensure stable customer preference as well as protect our luxury
brand image. It may be worth reviewing how we can improve our recipes for the new
version.
Practice 3

We recently asked customers to complete a survey to discover how we are doing and
how we could improve our service. According to our findings, the majority of our
customers were very happy with product quality. In fact, over half of those surveyed
thought that it was excellent and about a third said it was good. None of the
participants believed it was below satisfactory. Customers also indicated that they
were happy with the speed of our deliveries. However, regarding price, although most
customers felt that it was satisfactory, nearly a quarter disagreed. Furthermore, the
majority of customers raised concerns that our product range was poor. The survey
demonstrated that customer service was mainly satisfactory but a fifth of customers
had problems with it. Concerning value for money, none of our customers thought
that it was excellent, but over half of them believed it was good.
The biggest improvement over half our customers would like to see is for us
to offer bigger discounts for regular orders over €20,000. When asked what other
improvements we could make, nearly a quarter of respondents suggested that
communication could be improved because staff don’t respond to emails quickly
enough. 12 percent of customers also suggested that we offer a maintenance service
for all our products.
The findings therefore demonstrate that we should look at ways to improve our
price structure and expand our product range.

Situation: You work as a Senior Sales Manager at a sale furniture sales company and
you are a mentor to a new member of the sales staff who has been at the company for
one month. The bullet-pointed list below outlines the positive and negative aspects of
their performance. You have been asked to write an email to the new member of staff
appraising their performance and offering advice on how to improve.

Write an email of 200-250 words.

Dear Vikor,
You have been at the company for one month now and I hope that you have had a
great time here. As your mentor, I would like to send this feedback email to appraise
your performance and suggest you some improvements.

Firstly, you have many positive points in your performance, well done! These include
timekeeping, your professional appearance, and your overall attitude, which I consider
very positive and constructive. I am especially satisfied with the rapport you have with
our existing clients. You are well-liked among our clients already and they have good
feedback and trust in you.

However, you need to make sure you complete all your administrative duties on time.
During the working process, I noticed that you missed some details and this will give
us problems in the future. Attention to detail is important here.

What’s more, it is essential that you follow up with clients and ensure you call them
again after your first conversation or meeting with them. You could put a reminder or
make a note in your daily diary to do this. It certainly helps me.

Finally, I would like you to try and focus on your confidence with customers,
especially when approaching potential clients. Although sometimes it may be difficult
for a novice, remember that you are selling something of real value to them, so try to
approach your introductions from this position.

I hope this advice helps. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

With thanks,
Ellen
Practice 2
Write an email of about 225 words to a trainee stating some requirements for the next
part of the course. Include the following:
• notes from the meeting.
• longer phrases and more formal language.

Dear Amy,
As we discussed in the meeting today, I want to update you on the summary of the
meeting and the requirements for the next part of the course.
You have spent 6 months on the first part of the course and I would like to
congratulate you on your excellent performance in the first exam. You have gained the
highest scores among the trainees and you would be able to move to the next part from
next Monday.
Besides, here is some information about what you are required to do during the next
session. Firstly, you need to attend seminars/lectures more regularly. I noticed that in
the first part, you were sometimes late for training lectures without any reasonable
explanation. The second part will focus on specific knowledge relating to the working
patterns so make sure you are punctual and serious about your training.
Secondly, it is important to research and prepare better in advance for any upcoming
projects. You will be assigned to complete many projects in teams so it is also
necessary for you to know how to cooperate with others.
Thirdly, I expect you to hand in assignments on time. Although it may be difficult for
a novice, especially when you are doing a part-time job at the same time, remember
that attention to deadline is very important. You could put a reminder in your diary in
order to meet the required deadlines.
Finally, you will have to arrange a face-to-face meeting with your tutor every week to
discuss your progress and any problems you may be facing. Make sure that you
inform your tutor of any changes immediately.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
All the best,
MC.

Dear Sir/Madam,

It is with deep regret that we have to complain about your delay in the payment for
our service.

4 months ago, we fit the air conditioning system for your company and we expected to
receive 2000 dollars fee in July. However, your payment deadline has passed for 2
months and you still have not transferred the final payment.

Furthermore, when we attempted to call the Bussiness Department, we did not receive
any explanation for this delay. The staff promised to report this issue to the manager
and call us back but then did not get in contact again. We also sent an email to your
company 2 weeks ago but unfortunately, there was no response.

We have been cooperating with your company for more than 3 years so we expect you
to be professional and abide by your contract terms. Your actions and attitude have
damaged your reputation and our trust in your company.

As mentioned above, being a long-standing partner, we would appreciate immediate

action as well as compensation for the delayed payment. Unless you make payment
within the next week, we shall have no alternative but to take the matter further.

We look forward to your prompt response and resolution to this issue.

Yours faithfully,

Re: Formal complaint for rejections of loan approval

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to express my deep dissatisfaction with your bank service. I recently

applied for a loan under our company’s name ABC to start a new garment factory.
Our company has fulfilled all conditions as demanded by your bank staff and the bank
business manager had agreed to a loan for our company. But in the recent letter sent
from the bank, they informed us that the loan could not be approved without any
reasons stated. We have been using your banking services for more than 5 years for
our company’s day-to-day financial needs and we have always maintained a good
relationship with your bank with no delayed payments. As a result, we feel that your
bank has dealt with this matter most unprofessionally.

As a consequence of this problem, our new material invoices have not been paid and
this has led to a number of complaints from our suppliers. Our business is now in a
very challenging situation due to the lack of working capital and materials to allow the
factory to operate properly.

Being a long-standing customer, we would appreciate an immediate explanation of

this matter. Your customer services have promised to do everything possible to
resolve any complaints by the end of the next business day. However, it is 3 days
since I first called the business manager to explain our situation and we still have
received no response from the manager.

I request you consider my application again and guide me on what I should do to get
approval. I look forward to a positive reply from your side.

Yours faithfully,
ABC Company

Greetings from Seoul!

As you may know, thanks to the company's secondment program, I have taken the
opportunity to work in Seoul for 3 months. I have been dreaming of working in Korea
for a quite and now here I am!
I arrived here last week and one colleague took me from the airport to the hotel, where
I stayed on the first day as the company apartment was not ready. Then, I started work
the following day and spent the first working day introducing myself and getting to
know most of my colleagues. the manager of the local branch also came to my office
to welcome me and after that, he drove me to the company apartment.
Seoul is such a fabulous city that is worth living! This work allows me to get better
global perspective of business and the projects are so interesting to me that I rarely
feel tired despite the fact that my working schedule is so crazy.
This is also the first time I have lived and worked in a foreign country, so I am trying
to adapt and integrate into the new lifestyle and work culture by chatting with my
colleagues to get a better understanding.
However, there is one challenge that I am trying to overcome, which is the language
barrier. My Korean accent is not good so sometimes the locals find it difficult to
communicate with me, but it hasn’t caused any inconvenience to me.
I am sure that experience will be beneficial for my career and I highly recommend it
to everyone.
Unit 6: Report extract
Practice 1

Our company does not appear to be benefiting from the alliance which was formed
last year with Sketchy. This is a result of their recent increased fees, which are too
high for a small organization such as Beta Media. Consequently, an agreement has
been reached to exit the current alliance.
We have been in discussion with a new, smaller consultancy called Design Hub who
seem to meet our needs more. We are doing this in the hope of benefitting from
their experienced and knowledgeable staff and the fact that they have worked on
similar scale projects before.

Practice 2
Agreement has now been reached to exit the strategic alliance which we formed last
year because there is hardly any advantage for us in continuing. This is as a result of
the increasing number of problems the company has encountered and the failure to
achieve key objectives. For these reasons, we are now in discussion with a large
Peruvian construction company to set up a joint venture in order to build the new
housing project in Lima.
We are doing this in the hope of benefiting from the other company’s experience and
expertise. This joint venture will provide us with all the facilities we need as well as
the specialized staff they employ, both of which will be extremely valuable. The
partner company appears to have a good track record of building in the city centre
with this kind of project. Furthermore, we will benefit from their large workforce,
which we will need to complete the project on time.
Additional benefits of having a joint venture instead of the strategic alliance are that it
is a temporary contract and runs only for the duration of this project. Moreover, a joint
venture will not affect our individual businesses. It is evident that both companies
have the same objectives for the project and this should lead to much better
communication and fewer problems than we have had with the strategic alliance.

Practice 1
Imagine there has been an accident at your place of work or study. Write an accident
report:
Facts
Person(s) involved: Thomas Crielly, Production Supervisor
Date and time: 9 May 3 p.m.
Location: Factory A, Machine # 03
Events leading to accident: This morning, Mr Crielly was dealing with a problem on
packing machine 3. The machine had jammed and he was trying to repair it himself
without calling the maintenance engineer. Unfortunately, when he succeeded, some
packing material, which had got jammed in the machine, flew out and hit him in his
left eye. He was not wearing safety goggles at the time.
Injuries & treatment: He cut his eye badly so the company nurse was called
immediately. She cleaned the cut but had to send him to the local hospital because the
material had damaged the eye itself. Fortunately, the hospital managed to get the
material out of the eye without any serious damage. Mr Creilly has to wear a bandage
over his eye for a week.
Analysis
There seem to have been two main reasons for the accident: firstly, Mr Crielly’s
failure to call the maintenance engineer as company health and safety policy states
and, secondly, his failure to wear the safety goggles, which all operators must wear
while in the factory.
Recommendations
All staff must be reminded of the health and safety procedures in the factory, so
everyone needs regular training to ensure that procedures are followed correctly.

TASK 2: PRISM 3
Worker có nên chú ý Salary?
Many people choose their jobs based on the size of the salary offered. Personally, I
disagree with the idea that money is the key consideration when deciding on a career,
because I believe that other factors are equally important.

On the one hand, I agree that money is necessary in order for people to meet their
basic needs. For example, we all need money to pay for housing, food, bills, health
care, and education. Most people consider it a priority to at least earn a salary that
allows them to cover these needs and have a reasonable quality of life. If people chose
their jobs based on enjoyment or other non-financial factors, they might find it
difficult to support themselves. Artists and musicians, for instance, are known for
choosing a career path that they love, but that does not always provide them with
enough money to live comfortably and raise a family.

Nevertheless, I believe that other considerations are just as important as what we earn
in our jobs. Firstly, personal relationships and the atmosphere in a workplace are
extremely important when choosing a job. Having a good manager or friendly
colleagues, for example, can make a huge difference to workers’ levels of happiness
and general quality of life. Secondly, many people’s feelings of job satisfaction come
from their professional achievements, the skills they learn, and the position they reach,
rather than the money they earn. Finally, some people choose a career because they
want to help others and contribute something positive to society.

In conclusion, while salaries certainly affect people’s choice of profession, I do not

believe that money outweighs all other motivators.

Local food or imported food?

It is commonly thought that all food for the general public should be produced
domestically and imports of food should be discouraged. I tend to agree with this
opinion as food self-sufficiency plays a crucial role in the country’s security,
economy and environment.

To begin with, an adequate domestic supply of food is of paramount importance to

any country’s security. Heavy dependence on foreign staples could lead to acute
deficiency in cases of political conflicts, natural disasters or widespread diseases. For
instance, during the Covid-19 pandemic, when borders, travel and trade are restricted,
imported goods have almost disappeared in many countries. A country that is reliant
on imported food products could suffer from surging prices, social unrest or even
starvation.

Secondly, national economies would gain enormous benefits from attempting to

produce all their food domestically. More jobs and business opportunities could be
created in the wake of investments in agricultural projects as well as the food industry.
Take for example large-scale farms belonging to the TH milk company in Central
Vietnam, which employ a lot of local people and purchase local produce to feed their
herds, both of which have had positive impacts on the regional economy.

Finally, a decrease in food imports is also advantageous to the environment. This is

because food can be bought locally and transport of food is significantly reduced,
meaning less exhaust fumes are emitted into the atmosphere. As a result, the most
pressing environmental problems such as air pollution, could be greatly improved.

In conclusion, I believe that countries should limit food importation and encourage
domestic production due to benefits around food security, the economy and climate
change. Therefore the government should set clear limits and targets for imports and
domestic production respectively.

Animal extinction
It is true that many terrestrial and marine animal species are now endangered as a
result of the actions of humans. Various forms of environmental destruction have
brought about this situation, and solutions must be found and implemented
urgently.
The decline in many animal species stems from pollution or habitat destruction.
Pollution resulting from human activity is one of the main reasons why many animals
are on the brink of extinction. Aquatic life, such as coral reefs, are particularly
sensitive to such irresponsible behaviour as the dumping of toxic waste into oceans
and rivers. Another important factor is the environmental degradation caused by
deforestation and the industrialization of agriculture. Tigers in Indonesia, for example,
rarely survive in the wild following the clearing of rainforests, and they are now
protected in designated wildlife reserves where, at least, they have the freedom to
roam, to exhibit their natural behaviour and to breed.
Solutions must be adopted to deal with this decline in animal species. Investment in
sanitation systems will help protect water sources on which humans and animals both
depend to survive. The marine environment must be cleaned up and international
legislation strictly enforced to prevent actions such as the discharge of chemical
waste into the sea or the practice of whaling. In order to save species from
extinction, the conservation role of zoos must be prioritized. Many zoos and safari
parks, for example, now have successful captive breeding programmes, of which
the giant panda is perhaps the most famous. Endangered species must be protected
also in their natural habitats through the elimination of poaching and the creation of
more wildlife reserves.
In conclusion, humans are part of the animal kingdom and have a moral duty to save
species from extinction by taking steps to curb pollution and habitat
destruction
