Motion In A Straight Line

Problem Solving. Five points per letter.

1. The position of an object moving in a straight line is given by x = 0.3 t − 0.4 t + t , where x is
in meters and t in seconds. (a) Calculate the position of the object at t = 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and
4.0 s. (b) Calculate the object’s displacement between t = 0 and t = 4.0 s. (c) Calculate the
average velocity for the time interval from t = 2.0 to t = 4.0 s.

2. A particle had a velocity of 18 m/s and 2.4 s later its velocity was 30 m/s in the opposite
direction. Calculate the average acceleration of the particle during this 2.4 s interval.

3. A rocketship in free space moves with constant acceleration equal to 9.8 m/s2 . (a) If it
starts from rest, how long will it take to acquire a speed one-tenth that of light? (b) How far
will it travel in so doing? (The speed of light is 3.0x10 8 m/s.)

4. A car moving with constant acceleration covers the distance between two points 60 m apart
in 6.0 s. Its speed as it passes the second point is 15 m/s. (a) Calculate the speed at the
first point. (b) Calculate the acceleration.

5. An object has a constant acceleration of 3.2 m/s 2 . At a certain clock reading its velocity is
+9.6 m/s. Determine its velocity (a) 2.5 s earlier and (b) 2.5 s later.
Motion In A Plane

Problem Solving. #’s 1 & 5 - 5 points each. #’s 2, 3, 4 – 5 points per letter.

1. A block sliding toward the edge of the horizontal table top has a speed of 4 m/s at a point 3
m from the edge. It slides off the edge of the table, which is 1 m high, and strikes the floor 1
m from the edge of the table. What was the coefficient of sliding friction between the block
and table?

2. A golf ball is driven horizontally from an elevated tee with a speed of 25 m/s. It strikes the
fairway 2.5 seconds later.

a. How far has it fallen vertically?

b. How far has it traveled horizontally?
c. Find the horizontal and vertical components of its velocity, and the magnitude and
direction of its velocity just before it strikes.

3. A marksman fires a 0.22 caliber rifle horizontally at a target; the bullet has a muzzle velocity
of 300 m/s. How much does the bullet drop in flight if the target is
a. 50 m away
b. 150 m away ?

4. A batted baseball leaves the bat at an angle of 30º above the horizontal and is caught by an
outfielder 400 ft from the plate.
a. What was the initial speed of the ball?
b. How high did it rise?
c. How long was it in the air?

5. A baseball leaves the bat at a height of 4 ft above the ground, travelling at an angle of 45º
with the horizontal, and with a speed such that the horizontal range would be 400 ft. At a
distance of 360 ft from the home plate is a fence 30 ft high. Will the ball be a home run?
