Sample Calculation of Hydraulic Jack Pressure for Brake Testing of

Winch
FIG

WIRE ROPE

L1 F1

F2

JACK

HYD. PUMP L2

F1xL1 = F2 x L2

F2= F1xL1/L2

F2 = P x A

Required pressure applied by Hydraulic jack

P = F1/A x L1/L2

L1= (D/2)+(d/2)

F1 – Brake force in kgf

D – Diameter of drum in mtrs

d – Diameter of wire in mtrs

F2 – Force required from the hydraulic jack in kgf

P – Pressure to be applied on hydraulic jack in kg/cm2 (to be calculated)

A – Area of the bore of hydraulic jack in cm2

L2 – Distance from centre of hydraulic jack to centre of shaft of mooring winch in mtrs

Worked example:

MBL of wire - 974 KN = 99.3 x 1000 kgf

Required Brake Rendering Load – 60% of MBL of wire = 0.6 x 99.3 x 1000 kgf

F1 = 59.58 x 1000 kgf

D = 0.710mtrs

d = 0.042mtrs
L1 = (D+d)/2 = (0.710+.042)/2 = 0.376

L2 = (1.772 + 0.870) mtrs = 2.5 mtrs

A = 3.14 x (5.8/2)2 xcm2

P= F1xL1
A x L2

= 0.6 x 99.3 x 1000 x 4 x 0.376 _

3.14 x 5.8 x 5.8 x 2.5

P = 339.3 kg/cm2 - Pressure required on hydraulic jack
