Project Summary

The Erasmus Mundus Master’s “Global Studies” (EMGS) is a jointly designed, fully-integrated, interdisciplinary
study programme that issues a joint degree. It addresses students from all over the world, promotes diversity of
the student body, and fosters their mobility.
The EMGS consortium comprises five excellent European universities: the universities of Ghent, Leipzig,
Roskilde, Vienna, and Wrocław. Its associated partners enhance the multi-perspectivity of the programme and
increase opportunities for student and staff mobility. They include universities in Africa, Asia, North America, and
Australasia. The consortium welcomes guest lecturers from outside the consortium and fosters alliances with
non-academic partners to enhance cooperation and knowledge circulation between academia and the world of
work.
Since 2005, we’ve trained students to navigate a complex, highly interconnected yet also fragmented world. We
started from and maintain a critical and historical understanding of globalization that focuses on actors in different
world regions, their positionality, and their agency. To address new global dynamics, the consortium continues to
innovate and further adapt its academic and institutional agenda. We thus focus on training students’ literacy for
challenges such as climate crisis, global health, digitization, social cohesion, predatory geopolitics and war.
We have a successful track record in fostering the employability of our students for positions in academia,
international organizations, think tanks, public administration and business, e.g. in the fields such as development
cooperation, peace and security, global health, or climate change. EMGS alumni are mediators in international
interactions, resilient in contingent situations, and able to re-act to dynamic environments. They moderate
multi-perspectivity, develop solutions in complex projects, and communicate across professional and academic
boundaries.
