History:
In the 16th century, the territory of Ribeirão Pires was an immense Tupiniquim village called
Geribatiba. The caçique of this village was the Caiubi Indian, brother of the Chief Tibiriçá;

Due to the seizure of land by the Portuguese, the territory of Ribeirão Pires was incorporated into
the domains of Brás Cubas. Given the unfavorable geographical conditions, the city served only as
an access route and not as a place of settlement;

Name attributed to the field master Antônio Pires de Ávila, which settled on a site in the region,
around 1716. The name "Ribeirão Pires" was known from the construction of the first train stop, in
1885, then called "Ribeirão Pires Station";

Arrival of the first Japanese immigrants in the city around 1940, due to the need for labor for coffee
plantations, in the early twentieth century.

CULTURAL DIFFUSION IN QUEBEC

Isadora Guilhermette, Eloah Evangelista, Arthur Fiamini e Pedro Freires- 2ºAut

CULTURAL DIFFUSION
Cultural diffusion is the process by which cultural elements
spread from one society to another, or within a society,
through various forms of communication, such as music,
literature, art, religion, technology, and the media.
Cultural diffusion can be positive, as it allows cultural
exchange and diversity, the integration.
On the other hand, cultural diffusion can also have
negative effects, such as cultural homogenization, cultural
appropriation.
The French influence in Quebec is quite significant,

as the region was a French colony for over 200

years, until it was conquered by the British in 1760.

FRENCH During this period, the culture, language, religion

and architecture in the region evolved.
INFLUENCE
Some of the main French influences on Quebec

include: the city's architecture, economy, cuisine,

language, art and literature.

FOOD
Québec's food had changed because of
the harsh winters and had many
mouths to feed with little food.

RAGOÛT DE PATTE DE PORC

This dish has pork meat balls,

walnuts, cloves and flour.
LANGUAGE
French became recognized as the official language of Quebec in 1974.
Canadian French has changes. What happens is that the basis of the language is only one,

but in a colloquial conversation it is possible to notice the differences

1
Quebecers pronounce some phonemes differently, such as “a”. Canadians also have the

habit of putting words together.

ARCHITECTURE
The French influence on Quebec's architecture is quite significant.
During the French colony, architecture in the region developed
into a distinctly French style, known as French colonial
architecture. This style is characterized by steep roofs, stone and
brick walls, large windows and doors with wooden frames, and
mansard roofs.
After the British conquest, Quebec's architecture began to
incorporate English and American elements, but the French style
continued to be an important influence. Today, many historic
buildings in Quebec still feature French colonial architecture, such
as the Château Frontenac, an iconic hotel.
ART AND LITERATURE
THE FRENCH HAD A BIG INFLUENCE IN QUEBEC'S
ART AND LITERATURE.

THE FRENCH WRITERS INTRODUCTED LITERARY

STYLES AND FORMS OF EXPRESSION THAT
INFLUENCED QUEBEC'S WRITERS. THE LITERARY
ACTION KNOWN AS "LA NOUVELLE-FRANCE" WAS AN
EXAMPLE OF THIS CULTURAL EXCHANGE.

THE FRENCH ALSO INFLUENCED THE ART IN QUEBEC.

THE MODERN PAINTING AND SCULPTING FROM QUEBEC
WERE INFLUENCED BY THE FRENCH MODERNISM, AND
A LOT OF ARTISTS FROM QUEBEC STUDIED PRA
WORKED IN PARIS, INCLUDING JEAN - PAUL
RIOPELLE, ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS ARTISTS FROM
QUEBEC.
ECONOMY
The French influence had a significant impact on Quebec's economy, especially
during the French colonial era in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. During
this period, the economy was based mainly on the exploitation of natural resources.
The French also established a monopoly trading system that limited trade with
other colonial powers, which helped maintain French control over the region's
economy. After the British conquest, the French influence on the Quebec economy
gradually decreased. The French influence is still visible in Quebec's economy, with
many French companies having a strong presence in the region. France is also an
important commercial partner of Quebec.
