Experiment (4)
Cross sectional area
Objective :
To investigate the effect of change in cross sectional area on
the temperature profile along a thermal conductor .
Theory :
The rate of heat conduction though a plane layer is
proportional to the temperature difference a cross the layer
and the heat transfer area , but is inversely proportional to
the thickness of the layer . From Fourier law of heat
conduction ( dT / dx ) the temperature gradient , from
continuity the heat flow ratio is the same for each section of
the conductor . Also the thermal conductivity is constant .
AH ( dTdx ) H =AS ( dTdx ) S
Reading of the experiment :
V = 245 v
A= 0.194 A
% = 37 %
L= 3 cm
DH = 2.5 cm
Ds = 1.5 cm
Ratio = 2.5 ^2 / 1.5 ^2 = 2.78
Slope H = 20
Slope S = 41
Ratio slope = slope S / slope H = 41/20 = 2.05
