Q. No. 1: Consider an orifice with manometer system for measuring pressure drop. The
technician installed a defective manometer having different diameter of each
arm. The left arm and right arm have 8mm & 5mm diameter respectively. The
manometer fluid having weight density of 1.8x104 N/m3. The process fluid
having weight density of 1.2x104 N/m3. Determine the change in manometer
level in left arm for a pressure drop of 0.5 kPa.

Q. No. 2: A mercury thermometer is made from an invar tube, 1.25 mm inside diameter. It
is evacuated and filled with mercury to a height of 125 mm at 20°C. Using the
simple law of liquid expansion (ΔV= βV0ΔT), find the height of the column
when the thermometer is completely immersed in a liquid of temperature 250°C.
Given that the volumetric expansion coefficient of mercury is 1.8x10-4 °C-1.

Q. No. 3: Data for a certain thermistor is available for -20, 25 and 70°C. Obtain the
representation of the data in terms of Steinhart-Hart model.
T (°C) R (Ω)
-20 12540
25 1000
70 132.3

Q. No. 4: An RTD has temperature coefficient of resistance at 20°C of α20= 0.004 (°C)-1.
If resistance at 20°C is R20= 106Ω. Determine the resistance at 25°C.
The above RTD is used in a bridge circuit with R1= R2= R3= 100Ω and the supply
voltage is 9V. Calculate the voltmeter reading if there is a 1°C change in
temperature around 20°C in RTD. (neglect the effect of self-heating)
