6 Labs in 5 Days

A. Paper Chromatography
1. Determine which marker colours are mixtures and which are pure
2. Determine Rf values for each of the colours
3. Use paper chromatography to make the following pattern 
4. How do the results change if you change solvents?
(e.g. salt water, rubbing alcohol, petroleum ether)
5. How does paper chromatography relate to qualitative analysis?

B. Flame Tests
1. Record the colour of light observed for each sample.
2. Determine which ion is responsible for which colour.
3. Use flame test to identify cation in unknown sample
4. How do flame tests relate to qualitative analysis?
5. Can flame tests be used in quantitative analysis?
6. How do emission and absorption spectrometry relate to flame tests?

C. Precipitation Tests
1. Record the results of the behaviour of known samples.
2. Identify mislabelled substances using precipitation tests
3. Provide proof (at least three pieces of evidence – with their equations) that your claims are correct
4. How do precipitation tests relate to qualitative analysis?
5. How could precipitation tests be used for quantitative analysis?

D. Selective Precipitation
1. Isolate the 4 given cations or anions in the solution.
2. Identify each cation or anion isolated and prove with two pieces of evidence the identity of the
cation or anion.
3. Where and why is selective precipitation used?

E. Titration
1. Prepare titrant for the burette
2. Prepare titrand samples in Erlenmeyer flask
3. Determine amount of titrant required to neutralize titrand
4. Use measured values and stoichiometry to determine concentration of acid sample.
5. Is titration a qualitative or a quantitative method of analysis?

F. Colourimetry
1. Prepare standard serial dilutions
2. Record absorption or transmission values for each dilution
3. Graph the data to generate a calibration curve
4. Extrapolate and interpolate curve
5. Use curve to determine unknown concentration of sample
6. How does colourimetry relate to qualitative and quantitative analysis?
