LESSON 1

RHYTHM
 regular flow of music in time / movement of sound
 Referred to as pulse or the heartbeat

KINDS OF NOTES AND THEIR VALUES

BEAT
 Most basic unit of time in music
 Used as a measure to regulate the duration of individual tones

METER
 “metron” means measure
 grouping of beats in measure

SIMPLE METER
1. DUPLE METER - two beats in a measure
2. TRIPLE METER - three beats in a measure
3. QUADRUPLE METER - four beats in a measure

COMPOUND METER - grouped into threes (3/8), sixes (6/8), and nines 9/8).

TIME SIGNATURE - is a fraction-like number written at the beginning of a staff.

2 - upper number - the number of beats in a measure


4 - lower number - the kind of note that receives one beat

RHYTHMIC PATTERNS
 refer to the combination of notes and rests with long and short duration or different time values

BAR LINE
 a line that divides a group of notes into measures

IMPROVISED ECHO
 Technique or style of rhythmic patterns
 First group will clap and then the second group will follow

RHYTHMIC SYLLABLES
 “French time names or “Galin-Paris Chevesystem”
