DP-4050F Series Operation and Maintenance Manual

1. Introduction
1.1 About the DP-4050F Series
The Otari DP-4050F series cassette copier is a compact duplicating system for audio
compact cassettes. The DP-4050F series can duplicate cassettes at the copy rate of 8
or 16 times.

The DP-4050F series consist of two machines — DP-4050F-C2 (includes 1 cassette

master deck and 2 cassette slave decks) and DP-4050F-Z3 (includes 3 cassette slave
decks).

The duplication system can be easily expanded by connecting the DP-4050F-C2 with up
to three DP-4050F-Z3s, or by connecting other machines such as the DP-4050E-Z
buffer unit and DP-4050-OM open-reel master player.

This manual is intended for use with the DP-4050F series machines (DP-4050F-C2 and
DP-4050F-Z3) and DP-4050E-Z buffer unit.
The descriptions and references of the machine mainly refer to the DP-4050F-C2, but
they can be applied to the DP-4050F-Z3, except for the master unit portion.

Features

Selectable Duplication Speed: The tape speed for the cassette duplication can be
selected between 8x and 16x.
NOTE: The 16x speed cannot be used when the DP-4050E or earlier DP-4050 series
machines are connected to the DP-4050F series machines.

Semi-Automatic Cassette Duplication: The DP-4050F series provides semi-

automatic duplication operation in four operation modes selected in accordance with the
desired tape motion.

Short Tape End Detection System: If the slave tape length is insufficient and the slave
tape ends before the end of the master signal, an indicator on the slave unit blinks to
alert the operator that all the contents are not recorded on the slave tape.

System Expandability: The duplication system can be easily expanded using additional
slave units, buffer units, or open-reel master units.

2. Installation
2.1 Unpacking and Inspection
Each DP-4050F series machine is carefully packed and shipped to avoid damage during
transportation. Otari recommends opening the crate carefully and retaining the crate and
packing materials at least until proper operation of the machine has been established.

Before making any electrical connections, the machine should be visually inspected. If
there is any evidence of damage due to mis-handling during shipping, notify the
transportation carrier and submit a claim. Do not connect or use the machine if damage
is found.

2.2 Installation
Choose a level and well ventilated location for installing the DP-4050F series. To prevent
the system from malfunctioning, please avoid placing it in a location that is subject to
extreme cold/hot, strong magnetic fields, or heavy vibrations.

About Ventilation: For ventilation, please be sure to allow the clearance of at least 12
cm from the rear panel to the wall surface.

CAUTION! Any strong magnetic field around the machine may affect the system
performance. Nearby high voltage lines, heavy duty transformers, and radio
transmitters are considered to be general sources of disturbance.
NOTE: Preferable operation environment is as follows.
• Temperature: 5–40°C
• Relative Humidity: 20–80%

2.3 Connection

2.3.1 Connecting AC Power

Before connecting the AC power, make sure that the voltage and frequency supplied to
the machine agree with the machine’s power requirements printed on the label on the
rear panel. If they do not agree, the machine must be modified (see below) before it can
be used.

Make sure that the POWER switch of the machine is turned off, connect the supplied
power supply cable (PZ9D003) from the AC mains to the machine.

NOTE: The power supply cable is a three-wire cable and is used for common
grounding. Be sure to use the power supply cable supplied with the machine or an
equivalent.

Changing Voltage Requirement: The voltage requirement can be changed by the fuse
on the CONTROL PCB assembly. When changing the voltage requirement of the
machine, disconnect the power supply cable from the machine and change the fuse on
the CONTROL PCB assembly, labeled as “LINE VOLTAGE SELECTED BY FUSE,” to
the desired voltage position.
NOTE: Refer to §3.4 for the procedure to access the CONTROL PCB assembly.
NOTE: When the voltage requirements are changed, indicate the present voltage
requirements somewhere near the AC IN connector to prevent the possibility of an
accident due to incorrect voltages.

Fuse Replacement: In addition to the main fuse on the connector panel, there are
some fuses on the CONTROL PCB assembly of the DP-4050F-C2 and DP-4050F-Z3.
And there are some fuses on the BUFFER PCB assembly of the DP-4050E-Z.
When a fuse is blown out, first determine the cause, then after correcting the problem,
replace the fuse.

CAUTION! Use the specified fuses only. Using different fuses may cause damage
or fire. Refer to the tables below.

2.4 Connection with Earlier DP-4050 Series Machines

NOTE: When utilizing the DP-4050F series machines with the earlier DP-4050 series
(DP-4050 or DP-4050E), set the COPY SPEED switches on both the AUDIO & BIAS
PCB assembly (C2) and AUDIO AMP PCB assembly (Z3) to “X8.” The earlier DP-4050
series cannot be used with the 16x tape speed.

When connecting the DP-4050F series machines with the DP-4050 series or DP-4050E
series machines, the following procedures are required according to the combination of
the machines.

1. DP-4050-C2 + DP-4050F-Z3: Set SW2 on the CONTROL PCB assembly of the

DP-4050F-Z3 to “C2.” Disconnect CN4 on the SLAVE ADJ PCB assembly of the
DP-4050F-Z3.

2. DP-4050F-C2 + DP-4050F-Z3 + DP-4050-Z3: When connecting the DP-4050F-Z3

and DP-4050-Z3 in the same system, the DP-4050-Z3 should be connected as the
end machine of the system. If the DP-4050-Z3 is connected in the middle of the
system signal chain, the machines connected after the DP-4050-Z3 will not work
properly.

3. DP-4050-OM + DP-4050F-Z3: Set SW2 on the CONTROL PCB assembly of the

DP-4050F-Z3 to “C2.” To activate the short tape end detection of the DP-4050F-Z3,
attach a sensing foil at the point which is the following distance after from the end of
the signal. The distance is calculated by this formula.
L x 15 ÷ a (L: end leader tape length, a: tape speed setting of OM)

4. DP-4050F-C2 + DP-4050-OM + DP-4050F-Z3

a. When connecting the system as shown in Figure 2-8, SW2 on the CONTROL
PCB assembly of the DP-4050F-Z3s connected to DP-4050-OM should be set
to “C2.” For the DP-4050F-Z3’s connected to DP-4050F-C2, either setting of
SW2 is possible. SW2 on the MASTER ADJ PCB assembly of the DP-4050F-C2
should be set to “OFF.”
To activate the short tape end detection of the DP-4050F-Z3 properly, attach a
sensing foil in the same way described in case 3. In this system, the short tape
end detection of the DP-4050F-C2 is not available.

4. Operation
4.1 Starting Duplication
Before starting duplication, confirm that the machines in the system are properly
connected.

1. Turn on the system (earlier for warming up).

2. Set the master tape on the master deck and set new cassettes or completely
erased cassettes in the slave decks.
CAUTION! The slave decks have no erase head. Be sure to use cassettes
with no signal recorded.

3. Set the level control knobs on the DP-4050F-C2 to the “5 SRL” position.

4. Press the START button to start the duplication.

MODE
SELECT After the master deck reaches the end of the tape, the system operates in
SWITCH accordance with the selected mode (see below).
NOTE: The operation mode (Mode A–D) can be set with the mode select switch
located inside the front cover of the DP-4050F-C2. Refer to Figure 4-1.

5. After the slave cassettes are ejected, set new cassettes in the slave decks.
Then, press the START button to start the duplication again.

Figure 4-1 Mode Select Switch Location

Operation Modes: After the master deck reaches the end of the tape, the system
operates as follows, according to the mode selected with the mode select switch.

slave cassettes are ejected.
NOTE: In Mode B, pressing the START button while the master tape is rewinding
causes the DP-4050F-C2 to start the duplication just after the master tape reaches the
beginning. In this case, slave cassettes should be replaced with new ones while the
master tape is being rewound. The DUP M indicator blinks to show that the machine is
in Duplication Ready state.

Mode C: When the master deck reaches the end of the tape, the master tape is
rewound to the beginning. The slave decks continue recording until the end of the tape
reached, then the slave cassettes will be rewound to the beginning and ejected.
NOTE: If a series of operation (Rewind → Play → Stop or Play → Rewind → Stop) is
performed on the master deck of DP-4050F-C2, pressing the STOP button too quickly
after pressing the PLAY or REWIND button may cause the eject operation. This is not a

malfunction. The reason for this is that before the deck enters the next mode (Rewind →
Play, or Play → Rewind) the tape is automatically stopped once, and pressing the STOP
button during this stop state is recognized as an eject operation.

copied, with two master units connected, the DUP (M.S) indicators illuminate as shown
in the following table to signify which master tape is being copied.

DUP M DUP S
On On The master tape on this C2 master deck is now being copied.
Off On The master tape on the other master unit is now being copied.

4.2 One Side Copy

The DP-4050F-C2 can duplicate both sides of a tape simultaneously. However, this
causes crosstalk to occur between sides A and B. By using the One Side Copy function,
or by using a master tape recorded on one side only, crosstalk between sides A and B
can be reduced. The One Side Copy feature is useful especially when the duplication is
performed for material where much importance is attached to the sound quality.

To use the One Side Copy function, set the A-SIDE ONLY switch on the AUDIO & BIAS
PCB assembly to “A.” The A-SIDE ONLY indicator and the alarm indicator illuminate and
the channels 3 and 4 VU meter lamps go out.

NOTE: The other operations are the same as described above.

2002-11 15
DP-4050F Series Operation and Maintenance Manual

4.3 Short Tape End Detection

DP-4050F-C2 and Z3 have the short tape end detection feature which detects that a
slave tape is not recorded up to the end of the master tape. When the master tape ends,
the master end command is sent to the slave deck. Then, the slave deck compares the
timings of the master and slave ends. When slave tape ends earlier than master tape,
the ERROR – SHORT indicator on the slave deck blinks to tell the tape has been
recorded incompletely.

4.3.1 Definition of Master Tape End

There are two types of master tape end settings which can be selected by SW2 on the
MASTER ADJ PCB assembly:

Physical Tape End (Factory Setting): Set SW2 on the MASTER ADJ PCB assembly
to “REP SIG OFF.” When the supply motor stops, the master deck regards it as the end
of tape.
When the slave tape ends 0.5 seconds (or more) earlier than the master tape, this will be
detected as “Short Tape End.” If the slave tape ends within 0.5 seconds earlier than the
master, the slave tape is not detected as an inferior tape.

Reproducing Signal End: Set SW2 to “REP SIG ON.” When the master tape has a
non-signal portion that lasts longer than 12 seconds, the master deck regards it as the
end of tape. Non-signal level is defined on the master deck as the level -25 dB from 0
VU. When master and slave cassette tape lengths are different (for example, C-60 on the
master and C-90 on the slave), select the reproducing signal end (when the tape lengths
are the same, either master end is selectable. In this case, select one of them according
to your preference. Refer to §4.3.2).

4.3.2 Operation Modes at Short Tape End

a. When Physical Tape End is selected: When short tape end occurs, the slave acts
differently in each operation mode.

Mode A: When the slave tape ends 0.5 seconds (or more) earlier than the master tape,
the ERROR – SHORT indicator blinks, and the slave deck starts rewinding just after the
master deck reaches the end of tape. Then, the tape will be ejected. When the slave
tape finishes within 0.5 seconds earlier than the master tape, the ERROR – SHORT
indicator does not blink, and DP-4050F-C2 works normally.

DP-4050F Series Operation and Maintenance Manual

5. Maintenance
5.1 Routine Maintenance
Simple routine maintenance is indispensable to maintain maximum performance of the
system and extend its life.

Prepare the instruments and material listed in the table below, clean and demagnetize
the tape path after each duplicating operation or after every 8 hours of operation.

Instruments and Material for Routine Maintenance

Item Example
Cleaner Set ZA-51B (Standard Accessory)
Isopropyl alcohol Any (included in the above set)
Hand held type head demagnetizer Any (that would not scratch the head)
Blower brush Any

5.1.1 Tape Path Cleaning

Accumulation of magnetic particles on parts in the tape path will deteriorate the
performance of the tape deck, shortening the life of the head and rollers. Clean the tape
path with the following procedure:

1. Remove dust around the tape path with the blower brush.

2. Remove dirt completely from the head surface with an applicator (cotton
swab) dipped in the head cleaner solution.

3. Remove dirt from the tape guide, capstan shaft, and pinch roller with an
applicator dipped in isopropyl alcohol.

NOTE: For cleaning the head, never use any materials other than a head cleaner
solution so as to avoid damage to the head. On the other hand, avoid using the head
cleaner solution for a plastic finished surface or rubber rollers. Never use any metal
instrument that may scratch the head.

5.1.2 Head Demagnetization

Magnetization of a head may worsen the quality of duplication, partially attenuating the
high frequency range of the master tape. Demagnetize the head in the following
procedure:

1. Turn off the power to the duplicator system, and bring all recorded tapes far
away from the machine.

2. Turn on the power to the demagnetizer at a distance at least 1 meter from the
machine, and gradually bring it close to the head.

3. After demagnetizing the head as illustrated in Figure 5-1, gradually move the
demagnetizer away from the head for at least 1 meter, and then turn off the
power.

2. Set the 300 Hz to 3 kHz test tape with the controlled azimuth on the master
deck, and run the test tape.

3. Adjust channels 1 and 2 reproducing level control knobs so that the VU

meters indicate the same level within a range of -10 to 0 VU.

4. At this time, one of the two azimuth indicators blinks (or both blink alternately). This
indicates that the head fixing screw on the longer lighting side is tightened too
much. Adjust the head fixing screws so that both indicators blink almost at
the same intervals. It is recommended to adjust little by little, repeating run
and stop operations frequently.

6.1.2 Recording Level Check

Check the recording level before each test.

1. Connect the voltmeter between the signal pins (channel 1 hot pin 1 and
channel 1 GND pin 2) of the OUT (TO SLAVE) connector in the C2.

2. Mount the 315 Hz, 160 nWb/m level test tape (or 333 Hz, 250 nWb/m level
test tape) on the master deck.

3. While holding down the STOP/EJECT button of the master deck, place the
deck in Adjustment mode by pressing the DUP START button (the operation
mode select switch inside the front panel must be set to “Mode C”). For the
detail of adjustment mode, refer to the note of §5.2.2.
Turn the reproducing level control knob so as to obtain a reading of -4 dBu
on the voltmeter (0 dBu for DIN, 250 nWb/m level type).

4. Repeat step 3 for channels 2 through 4, changing the connection of the

voltmeter (refer to table below).

5. Mount a completely erased tape on the slave deck, copy the test tape to it.

6. Connect the voltmeter to the channel 1 output terminal on the reference

cassette reproducer and note the reading of the voltmeter while reproducing
the copied tape.

7. Repeat step 6 for channels 2 through 4.

The reading of the voltmeter must be same as the level of test tape,
-4 dBu, 160 nWb/m tape (0 dBu, 250 nWb/m tape). If a proper reading cannot be
obtained, adjust the recording level before any other tests.

6.1.3 Overall Frequency Characteristic Test

1. Mount the frequency characteristic test tape on the master deck, and the
completely erased tape on the slave deck.

2. Copy the test tape.

3. Reproduce the copied tape on the reference cassette reproducer, and read
the value of each channel.
The reading must be as follows: (excluding reproduce contour effects)
8x copy rate: +2, -3 dB for 100 Hz to 10 kHz
16x copy rate: +2, -3 dB for 100 Hz to 8 kHz
If a proper reading cannot be obtained, it is necessary to adjust the equalizer.

6.1.4 Overall S/N Ratio Test

1. Copy the standard level test tape for several minutes.

2. Remove the test tape from the master deck, and then set it to the Adjustment
mode and keep it as is for several minutes in a no signal state.

3. Reproduce the copied tape on the reference cassette reproducer, and note
the reading of the voltmeter at the signal portion and no signal portion, and
then calculate the signal to noise ratio.
The signal to noise ratio must be 45 dB or more. If a satisfactory S/N ratio cannot
be obtained, check the following items:
a. Recording level
b. Bias current
c. Equalizer
d. Bias output
e. Recording/Reproducing audio system
f. Magnetization of head
g. Magnetic field around the machine

6.1.5 Crosstalk Test

1. Copy the crosstalk test tape (1 kHz, channel 2) to a fully erased tape by using
the C2.

2. Connect a 1 kHz band pass filter to the channel 2 output terminal of the
reference cassette reproducer, and the voltmeter to the filter.

3. Reproduce the copied tape on the reference cassette reproducer, and note
the reading of the voltmeter.

4. Move the filter to channel 1, and repeat step 3.

5. Move the filter to channel 3, and repeat step 3.

6. Calculate the crosstalk between channels 1 and 2 from the reading of

channels 2 and 1. Also calculate the crosstalk between channels 2 and 3 from
the readings of channels 2 and 3.
The crosstalk between channels 1 and 2 must be 35 dB or more, and the reading
between channels 2 and 3 must be 45 dB or more. If a satisfactory value cannot be
obtained, improper positioning of the head in the master deck, slave deck, or
reference cassette reproducer, or damage to the head can be considered as the
reason.

2002-11 25
DP-4050F Series Operation and Maintenance Manual

6.1.6 Wow & Flutter Test

1. Copy the wow & flutter test tape (3 kHz, wow & flutter 0.03% rms or less) by
using the C2.

2. Connect the flutter meter to the output terminal of the reference cassette
reproducer, and set the flutter meter to the DIN WTD mode.

3. Reproduce the copied tape on the reference cassette reproducer and

observe the flutter.
The reading must be 0.3% rms or less.

The wow & flutter test allows the analysis of these factors with the analyzer connected to
the DEMODULATOR output terminal of the flutter meter. If the fluctuation ratio observed
by the analyzer agrees with the revolution frequency of the pinch roller, idler, reel table,
etc., the cause can be easily determined. The following can be considered as the reason
for excessive wow & flutter.
a. Trouble in the capstan motor
b. Pinch roller or idler is damaged.
c. Pinch roller and capstan are dirty.
d. Pinch roller solenoid does not work sufficiently.

6.2 Adjustment of Electric Circuit

If the results of the above performance tests are not satisfactory, the adjustment below is
necessary. Before starting each adjustment, be sure to clean and demagnetize the head
and tape path.

6.2.1 Adjustment of Tape Speed

Each C2 and Z3 unit contains three capstan motors, one for each deck. All capstan
motors are preset and locked to 15 ips at the factory, thus even replacement of capstan
motors may not require adjustment. Nevertheless, test and if necessary adjust.
NOTE: The following procedures are explained with values for 8x copy rate.

6.2.1.1 Master Deck Capstan Motor Test and Adjustment

1. Open the front panel, and turn off the bias switch.

2. Open the panel in which the VU meters are installed. Simply remove the
screws on the sides and hinge open.

3. Connect the probes of a frequency counter to the terminals on the rear of any
VU meter.

4. Place a 3-kHz test tape on the master deck, and start reproduce mode.

5. Check the frequency counter for a reading between 23.76 kHz and 24.24 kHz
(24 kHz ±1%).
For 16x copy rate: 47.52 kHz – 48.48 kHz (48 kHz ±1%)

6. If the desired value described above is not observed, set SW1 to the “FIX”
position and tweak VC1 on the MOTOR CONTROL PCB assembly so that the
reading becomes 24 kHz ±1%.

7. To set speed variation of the master capstan motor, set SW1 to the “VARI”
position and tweak the VR labeled “CAPSTAN SPEED” on the MASTER ADJ
PCB assembly so that the desired speed deviation (%) from 24 kHz is
obtained. The deviation is equal to the speed variation.
For example, +5% deviation from 24 kHz means that the capstan speed becomes
5% faster than “Fixed” speed. After the adjustment, be sure to return SW1 to the
FIX position.

Figure 6-5 Controls on AUDIO & BIAS PCB Assembly (C2) and AUDIO AMP PCB Assembly (Z3)

1. Set the standard level tape (315 Hz, 160 nWb/m or 333 Hz, 250 nWb/m) on
the master deck. As in reproducing level checking, connect the voltmeter to
the OUT (TO SLAVE) connector pins of the channel to be measured. Refer to
§6.1.2.

2. Place the deck in Adjustment mode, and adjust the channel 1 master GAIN
trimmer VR102 on the AUDIO & BIAS PCB assembly so as to provide a
reading of -4 dBu on the voltmeter (0 dBu at 333 Hz, 250 nWb/m). Also check
if the channel 1 VU meter indicates 0 VU.

3. Adjust other channels in the same way (use VR202, VR302, or VR402).

CAUTION! Confirm that SW4 on the AUDIO & BIAS PCB assembly is set to
“OFF.” This switch is used to output reproduced signals regardless of the START
button status. When two master decks (two C2s or one C2 and OM) are in the
system and used alternately, the reproduced signal level of the current master
deck may drop by approximately 6 dB, if the SW4 of the unused master deck is
“ON.” This is caused by an impedance change applied to the reproduced signal:
The reproduced signal also goes into the circuitry of the unused master deck and
the impedance of the reproduced signal changes and the signal level drops.

2002-11 29
DP-4050F Series Operation and Maintenance Manual

6.2.3 Adjustment of VU Meter

If the VU meter did not indicate 0 VU in the adjustment of the reproducing level, adjust
the trimmers VR103, VR203, VR303, and VR403 on the AUDIO & BIAS PCB assembly
while reproducing the test tape. When the 250 nWb/m test tape is played, the actual
indication of the VU meter should be +4 VU, however, the scale on the VU meter is up to
+3 VU. In that case, set the reproducing level control knob to “3,” then adjust VR103 to
VR403 so that the reading becomes -0.3 VU.

6.2.4 Adjustment of Reproducing Equalizer

1. Set the frequency characteristic test tape (333 Hz, 8 kHz, DIN SRL -20 dB) on
the master deck. Connect the voltmeter to the OUT (TO SLAVE) connector
pins at channel 1.

2. Reproduce the test tape, and adjust the channel 1 master EQ trimmer VR101
so that the reading of the voltmeter is within the range of -20 ±3 dB. The
variable range provided by the trimmer is shown in Figure 6-6.

3. Adjust other channels as well.

2. Place the system in Duplication mode, and turn the channel 1 bias trap
trimmer L1 so that the voltmeter shows the maximum reading.

3. Adjust other channels in the same way.

30 2002-11
DP-4050F Series Operation and Maintenance Manual

6.2.6 Adjustment of Bias Frequency

The bias frequency is controlled by a quartz oscillator. If the frequency or output
fluctuates for some reason, adjust the bias frequency in the following procedure. It is
also important to warm up the system sufficiently. This adjustment is performed on the
DP-4050F-C2 and the DP-4050F-Z buffer unit. For the buffer unit, first remove the unit
cover by removing two screws on each side.

1. Connect the frequency counter to the bias output pins (11 and 15) of OUT
(TO SLAVE) connector.

2. Turn off SW2 on the AUDIO & BIAS PCB. (For the buffer unit, SW1 on the
BUFFER PCB assembly.)

3. Check if the counter indicates a value somewhat (approx. 3 kHz to 6 kHz)

smaller than 800 kHz. If the value is greatly out of this range, turn VC1 for
proper adjustment.

4. Turn on SW2 (SW1) — the frequency is then locked — and check if the
counter indicates 800 kHz.

6.2.7 Adjustment of Bias Current

The adjustment of bias current has an influence to the signal to noise ratio, frequency
characteristic, distortion ratio, and recording level. When the head is replaced, be sure to
make this adjustment. The bias current value is indicated on the data sheet printed
inside of the front panel.

1. Perform step 1 in §6.2.5.

2. Place the decks in Adjustment mode, and adjust the channel 1 bias current
control trimmer VR1 so that the voltmeter indicates the value mentioned on
the data sheet. (Since a resistance of 10 Ω exists between CP1 and GND,
calculate V = IR for the value of the voltmeter.)

3. Adjust the other channels in the same way.

6.2.8 Setting of Recording Level

When the head is replaced, the recording level must be set properly. (The recording level
of a copied tape must be equal to that of the master tape.)

1. Turn off SW1 on the AUDIO & BIAS PCB assembly.

2. Mount the standard level test tape on the master deck. Connect the voltmeter
between CP1 and GND on the SLAVE ADJUST PCB assembly.

3. Set the deck to Adjustment mode, and then turn VR104 (for slave 1, channel
1) so that the voltmeter indicates the value mentioned on the data sheet. (The
value of the voltmeter is estimated by the equation: V = IR).

4. Adjust the other channels in the same way (use VR204, VR304, VR404).

5. Turn on SW1 again (the alarm LED goes off).

6. Set the non-recorded tape on the slave deck and copy the standard level test
tape.

7. Set the copied tape on the reference cassette reproducer and note the output
level (this procedure is same as §6.1.2 steps 6 and 7).

8. Adjust VR104, VR204, VR304, and VR404 according to the observed value of
the voltmeter.

9. Repeat steps 6–8 until the appropriate value is obtained.

6.2.9 Adjustment of Overall Frequency Characteristic

1. Copy the frequency characteristic test tape (333 Hz, 8 kHz, 2.5 kHz, -20 dB).

2. Reproduce the copied tape on the reference cassette reproducer connected

to a voltmeter at the output terminal. Note the value for each frequency (at
each channel).

3. Adjust VR101–VR401*, VR105–VR405**, and VR505–VR805** so that the value

is within the range of ±3 dB for 100 Hz to 10 kHz.
