Studio Intentions

Continuing from RSP-II (Related Study Program at Bhavnagar) work and

experiences, the studio further tries to understand collective living environment and
complex inter-relationship of individual within community / families and between
their surrounding in socio-cultural context. At the same time studio tries to understand
various form of physical manifestation of the built environment, so as to understand
shared spaces of neighborhood, mutually dependent living, relevance of house type,
definition of a house/dwelling is not independent of neighboring houses (open space
of a house is defined by surrounding built form), making of a house and resources of
the place etc.

Design Studio - IV, 2021 Contextual Housing at Old Core, Bhavnagar Faculty Team: RP, RK, DP, AP 8
Studio Objectives

• Response to surrounding built fabric.

• Understanding of a dwelling with sense of community and nature of sharing.
• Understanding of a dwelling through organizational structure, space usage
climatic response structural systems and material resources.
• Inter relationships between indoor and outdoor spaces of the dwelling.
• Considering the future prospect of a changing scenario.

Study of Bhavnagar

History of Bhavnagar:

Bhavnagar was one of the cultural capital of Saurashtra. Before that Sihor was functioning as capital. Maharaja
Bhavsinhji successfully defended his capital ‘Sihor’ of the original Gohilwad state from the Maratha attack but realized
that Sihor city was not easy to defend. Thus he chose the site of ‘Vadva’ village 25km away from Sihor for a new capital
city in 1723. Vadva had 4 water bodies, which could cater to the new city. The new city is named Bhavnagar after its name
and the territory of the city is confined through fortification for security concern.

The city was established based on two primary concerns. One is the administrative center of the region and
commercial empire. The location had various benefits such as provided enough safety to the capital because one edge
is covered with sea and this location had the potential to develop a new port for trade connection across the sea.

Many communities (skilled people – Kansara, salat, Suthar, Khatri, Baniya) came or invited by Maharaja, they
helped in developing the trade and business of the Bhavnagar. Jains, Parsi, Vohara, Muslim, Christian, Kori are some of
the communities who had a major role in developing trade, Import export business by developing new industries in the
city.

The landscape of Bhavnagar state is composed of partly hilly track and partly of medium fertile plains yielding good
agricultural income. In addition to this port, activities offered employment for laborers and traders making Bhavnagar a
prosperous state.

Bhavnagar was a fortified city,

which had four gates:

Study of Bhavnagar

Town structure:

There were two major roads, which cross the whole city to four gates. This connected with all the secondary
streets. Further hierarchy of the city network is “Sheri-khancho”, “khadki” to “Delo”. Darbarghadh is at the edge of the lake
where the fort wall terminates (southwest of the city). Markets majorly surround the surrounding of the Darbarghadh. A
wall with a moat surrounded the city.

The city was divided into four major precincts. Each precinct had streets (sheris) and “delas” which belonged to a
particular community. Within each sector or precinct, various religious institutions were located. These institutions served
as gathering spaces for the people.

1870-1896 was a critical phase of Bhavnagar city. During this period the city was expanded and the main fort
wall was demolished. Also, the Pricing of darbargadh was revisited for the economical and residential activities. It can
be considered as the first urban renewal scheme for the development of the city. Therefore after the removal of the fort
wall new development of Bhavnagar attracted many people for better livelihood opportunities. In addition, various
small scale industries were flourished Because of the nearby port. This led the city to develop outside the fort because
of overcrowding. These new settlements were called ‘Para’ or ‘Paru’. Immediate development around the demolished
fort wall was organic. The main roads of the new capital city of Bhavnagar were oriented to face the four cardinal
directions. These roads were bounded by gateways.

Study of Bhavnagar

The Darbargadh is located centrally and the hierarchy of institutions and street layout was established about these
important institutions. The road from Gogha gate to Khar gate facilitates transport to the port. Darbargadh, therefore, is
a dominant element within the city. It is a prominent example of change and transformation at the urban scale. During
this period many institutions came into existence. Among these were the high court; high School, library, hospital, and
these types were a direct result of colonialism.

The series of modifications transformed the area around Darbargadh and reflected the changing values of the
society at the time. The Darbargadh now became the institution of trade and commerce named ‘Darbar Bank’. Following
this change, most of the street edges around the Darbargadh area begin to acquire a commercial character with the
residences at the rear.

Moreover on examining the peripheral road that runs around the walled city one finds few connections to the Inner
city. The primary connections are only made at the positions of the original gates of the city. New institutions proclaim the
advent of a new age of modernism

In 1940-50-trade connection reaches

on the peak, during the period of Maharaja
Krushnakumarsihji further developed the city with
British town planning influence, which named
Krushnanagar. The state was merged into the
Indian union in keeping with the liberal policies of
the maharaja..

Architecture:
Timber structures can be seen all around the town. The fine woodwork in the elements such as bracket, posts,
beams; Delo, barsaakhs, etc. gives a very elegant aesthetic value to the building. The ground floor is constructed by thick
load bearing random rubble masonry walls or a combination of random rubble and brick.

The floors above have a wooden post-beam structure, with intermediate wooden bands running along all the
walls. This structure has the advantage of being lightweight and earthquake-resistant due to the tie of the horizontal
wooden members.

Study of Bhavnagar

Architecture:
Houses lining the primary streets majorly have shops facing the street, having an attractive decorative facade,
which is in contrast to the houses lining the tertiary streets. Houses at the secondary and tertiary streets have collective
spaces in the cluster organization. In each “Khancho” there is a hand-pump as a common amenity shared by 2-3 clusters
of houses.

The interior layout also varies according to which community is residing. In the Diwan’s Havelis, for instance,
Havelis are introverted structures, with a courtyard at the center, with the rooms opening to it, connecting the whole
house. Houses were responding to the secondary streets by projecting out the mass, which is the entrance of the house.
The multi-family dwellings in one building were seen very commonly in Bhavnagar and Vadva, defined by separate
entrances like stairs at the front for direct access to the upper floor and kitchen on each floor.

Architecture:
A typical bay of the building reveals Indo-Saracenic motifs. Balusters, weather shades, plinths, and brackets are
of Indian origin while the arches are Islamic or Colonial. The moldings of the cornice, parapet, and ceiling have a
European origin.

The building is an architectural synthesis of two cultural concepts. First is the Renaissance concept of the villa with
surrounding open spaces and second is the response to traditional practices and climate, like courtyard as a central
private open space and “Osari”.

Introduction Of Program

Brief :
The Exercise is to design dwelling/s for a family of local residents at Bhutnath mahadev chowk, Diwanpara road
Opp. Ambika girl’s high school as an integrated part of the old core of Bhavnagar. Residents believe in the shared values
that exist in which they have grown up and participated in that character of collective living. Students are asked to derive
the detail program brief for the family with logical argument.

The area requirements for household activities are derived from the Case studies of RSP –II, Bhavnagar Studies,
students own residence and other secondary references.
