Rectangular Coordinate System

Objective/s:
 Illustrate the rectangular coordinate system.
 Identify the location of points in the Cartesian Coordinate plane.
 Plot points in the Cartesian Coordinate plane.

Definition:
Cartesian Coordinate Plane -is a plane formed by the intersection of two number lines, one is
horizontal and the other is vertical.
René Descartes – a French Mathematician who discovered the cartesian coordinate plane.
X – axis – is the horizontal axis, representing the independent variable.
Y – axis – is the vertical axis, representing the dependent variable.
Origin – the point where the x- axis and y – axis intersect at (0, 0). It serves as the reference
point for locating other points on the plane.
Coordinates – a point in the Cartesian plane represented by an ordered pair (x, y) where x is the
value along the x – axis and y is the value along the y – axis.
