GRADE 8 – LINEAR EQUATIONS IN TWO VARIABLES

Learning Competency:
illustrates the rectangular coordinate system and its uses.

Concept
RECTANGULAR COORIDINATE PLANE (CARTESIAN PLANE)

The Cartesian coordinate plane –

It consists of two directed lines that perpendicularly

intersect their respective zero points.

The horizontal line is called the x-axis (x,0)

and the vertical line is called the y-axis.(0,y)
The point of intersection of the x-axis and the y-axis is
called the origin(0, 0)
And the plane was divided into four quadrants
Quadrant I - contains coordinates (x , y)
Quadrant II - contains coordinates (-x, y)
Quadrant III - contains coordinates (-x, -y)
Quadrant IV - contains coordinates (x, -y)
The Coordinates
The position of any point on the Cartesian plane is described by using two numbers: (x, y). the x-coordinate called
abscissa and the y-coordinate called ordinate,
(abscissa, ordinate) and they are called ordered pairs.

Rene Descartes – the man who invented the Rectangular

Coordinate Plane as coordinate system to locate an object
and soon named after him as the Cartesian Plane.
Funny brief history of the cartesian plane
when Descartes got sick, he tends to the hospital for his
medical treatment, while he was on his bed looking at the
rectangular ceiling, he notices a small bug on the ceiling
and eagerly want to determine its exact location. So, while
on the hospital he formulates and create the rectangular
coordinate plane.

Today the most practical use of this system is in Navigational Field (Airplanes and Ships use this to determine
their locations whenever they are)
Reading Plots – follow the ordered pairs pattern (x, y)
B C Locate the following points in the Cartesian Plane
A and identify which they are located
A = (-4, 3) --- QII
D B= (0, 3) --- y-axis
F C= (3, 5) --- QI
E D= (-1, 1) --- QII
E= (0, 0) --- origin
J F= (3, 0) --- x-axis
G G= (2, -2) --- QIV
K H= (2, -4) --- QIV
I= (0, -4) --- y-axis
H J= (-3.5, -1) --- QIII
II K= (-3, -2) --- QIII
H

You should look for the abscissa of the

point first then its ordinate.
The process on Plotting points follows the same procedure

ACTIVITY
