Prayer for a Novena

1859-1948
Infinitely merciful God who descended from Heaven to Earth
for the salvation and model of mankind and who saith, "Ask
and ye shall receive, seek and ye shall find, knock and it
shall be opened unto you", bu the merits and intercession of
Thy servant Father Cruz, who imitating Thee perfectly and
inflamed with charity, also spent his life on earth doing good,
consoling the afflicted, helping the needy, visiting the poor
and prisoners and converting sinners; grant us the grace to
imitate his virtues, principally his spirit of prayer and union
with God, his spirit of lively faith, firm hope, ardent love, and
zeal for the salvation of souls and his horror of all that
displeases the Holy Spirit and makes us less worthy of Holy
Communion. Grant us, in particular, the grace of... (mention
your intention)... if it be for Thy honor and the good of our
souls and the glory of Thy servant. Amen.

regard the humility and simplicity with which Thy servant
Francisco sought the Divine Glory and the temporal and
supernatural good of the poor and humble and glorify Thy
faithful disciple with the crown of sanctity if this be for Thy
greater Glory, who lives and reignest for ever and ever,

 F a t h e r F r a n c i s c o d a C r u z, S. J.
Father Francisco Rodrigues da Cruz was born at Alcochete in
Portugal on July 29th, 1859. He took his degree in Theology at
Coimbra in 1880, was ordained in 1882, and joined the Society
of Jesus in 1940, thus satisfying a desire he had for 60 years.
He died in Lisbon on October 1st, 1948
His love for God and of his neighbour was intense. Sensitive
to all human miseries, especially spiritual ones, devoured by
zeal for the love of God and for the salvation of souls, the life
of this holy priest was one long mission throughout Portugal,
praying, blessing, and preaching. His favourite apostolic
work was with prisoners, the sick, the poor and miserable,
and sinners. Father Cruz was very devout to his fellow
Jesuit, St. Francis Xavier, to whom he always prayed, and he
attributed to the Saint;s intercession the innumerable hraces
which God conceded to him on behalf of those who asked his
aid in their spiritual and material needs.

Sweet Heart of Mary, be my salvation. Obtain for me from the Holy
Trinity. pardon for all my sins; the grace of a lively faith, firm hope,
and ardent charity. the grace to communicate these virtues to many
souls; the grace to only think, say, write, see, and practice what is
according to Thy Holy Will; to avoid any deliberate sin, even if it be
only venial, to resist promptly all temptations, to do all the good I can
and ought to perform with a pure intention, to hear with patience and
even joy all work and sufferings, to try to aim at perfection following
the example of the saints in Heaven and the just on earth.
Obtain for me also health of soul and body, strength to be able to work
for the glory of God and the salvation of souls, never to need an
operation and to be in possession of my senses until the end of my life,
so as to love Thee intensely until I die and to be the instrument of the
Divine Goodness in doing a great deal of good during my life, at death,
and after death, and to bless in Heaven all those whom I bless on
earth.
