INVOCATION OF ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI
Most High, glorious God, enlighten the darkness of my heart and give me
true faith, certain hope and perfect charity, sense and knowledge, Lord, that I
may carry out Your holy and true command. Amen..
Hail Mary, full of sorrows, the Crucified is with thee; thou art pitiable
amongst women, and pitiable is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of the Crucified, implore for us, the crucifiers of thy Son,
tears of contrition, now and at the hour of our death. Amen
Heavenly Father, I am called to walk by the light of Christ, Your Son, and to
trust in His wisdom. During Lent, I submit myself to Him more and more and
am striving to believe in Him with all my heart. I enter on this path of
repentance so that in dying to self I might rise to new life.
Lord Jesus, you spoke peace to a sinful world and brought mankind the gift
of reconciliation by the suffering and death you endured. I love you and I
joyfully bear the name "Christian." Teach me to follow your example.
Increase my faith, hope and charity so that I may struggle to turn hatred to
love and conflict to peace.
4
Forgive my sins against the unity of your family, make me love as you loved
me. Good Master, make me mindful of the dignity you gave me in Baptism,
may I live for you at every moment.
Give me a perfect heart to receive your work, that I may bring forth fruit in
patience. Renew my eagerness to work with you in building a better world, so
that my friends may hear your gospel of peace and justice. Amen.
Let us pray: Father, Mary joined in offering Jesus in sacrifice on the Cross.
Through her intercession and example, give us the grace to share more fully
in the Eucharistic sacrifice. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

VIA CRUCIS
THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS
Preparatory Prayers
Leaving the house of Caiaphas, where he had been blasphemed, and the
house of Herod, where he had been mocked, Jesus is dragged before Pilate,
his back torn with scourges, his head crowned with thorns; and he, who on
the last day will judge the living and the dead, is himself condemned to a
disgraceful death.
Prayer: It was for us that You did suffer, O Blessed Jesus. It was for our sins
that You were condemned to die. Oh, grant that we may detest our sins from
the bottom of our hearts, and obtain your mercy and pardon by repentance.
A heavy cross is laid upon the bruised shoulders of Jesus. He receives it with
meekness and with a sense of commitment, for it is the instrument with
which he is to redeem the world and to accomplish the mission for which his
heavenly Father has sent him.
Prayer: O Jesus, grant us, by the virtue of your cross, to embrace with
meekness and cheerful submission the difficulties of our life, and to be ever
ready to take up our cross and follow You.
Bowed down under the weight of the cross, Jesus slowly sets forth on the
way to Calvary, amidst the mockeries and insults of the crowd. His agony in
the garden has exhausted his body. He is lacerated with blows and wounds;
his strength fails Him. He falls to the ground under his cross.
Prayer: O Jesus, who for our sins did bear the heavy burden of the cross and
did fall under its weight, may the thoughts of your suffering make us watchful
over ourselves and save us from any grievous fall into sin.
7
V: Have mercy on us, O Lord.
R: Have mercy on us.
Still burdened with his cross, and wounded yet more by his fall, Jesus
proceeds on His way. He is met by his loving mother. What a meeting must
have that been! What a sword of anguish must have pierced the mother’s
heart! What must have been the compassion of that Son for his holy mother!
Prayer: O Jesus, by the compassion which You did feel for You Mother, have
compassion on us, and give us a share in her intercession. O Mary, most
afflicted mother, intercede for us that, through the sufferings of your Son, we
may be delivered from eternal death.
The Fifth Station: Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus to carry the cross
Prayer: O Lord Jesus, may it be our privilege to bear our cross. May we glory
in nothing else; by the cross, may the world be crucified unto us, and we unto
8
the world. May we never shrink from suffering but rather rejoice if we should
be counted worthy to suffer for your name’s sake.
As Jesus proceeds along the way covered with the sweat of blood, a woman,
moved with compassion, makes her way through the crowd, and wipes his
face with a handkerchief. As a reward for her piety, the impression of His
sacred countenance is miraculously imprinted upon the handkerchief.
Prayer; O Jesus, may the contemplation of your sufferings move us with deep
compassion. Make us hate our sins and kindle in our hearts, more fervent
love for You. May your image be graven on our minds until we are
transformed into Your likeness.
9
The Seventh Station: Jesus falls beneath His cross, the second time
The pain of his wounds; and the loss of blood increasing at every step of his
way, weakens him; and Jesus falls to the ground for the second time.
Prayer: O Jesus, who did fall a second time beneath the load of our sins and
of your suffering for our sins, how often have we grieved you by our repeated
falls into sin! Oh, may we rather die than ever offend You!
At the sight of the sufferings of Jesus, some holy women in the crowd were
so touched with sympathy that they openly bewailed and lamented for Him.
Jesus, knowing the things that would befall Jerusalem because of its rejection
of him, turned to them and said, ―Daughters of Jerusalem, weep for
yourselves and for your children‖.
Prayer: O Jesus, we mourn and will always mourn for you and for ourselves,
for your sufferings and for our sins which caused them. Oh, teach us to
mourn, so that we may repent and be saved from the dreadful end to those
who reject or neglect you, their God and their all.
10
V: Have mercy on us, O Lord.
R: Have mercy on us.
The Ninth Station: Jesus falls beneath His cross the third time
Jesus has almost arrived at the summit of Calvary, but before he reaches the
spot where he is to be crucified, his strength again fails Him, and he falls the
third time.
Prayer: O Jesus, we entreat you by the merit of this your third and most
painful fall, to pardon our frequent relapses and our long continuance in sin.
May the thought of Your sufferings make us hate our sins more and more.
Jesus at last arrives at Golgotha and they prepare to crucify Him. They strip
Him of His garments and mock Him.
Prayer: O Jesus, strip us of all false esteem, conceit and pride and make us
humble like you in this life, so that we share your glory with you in the life to
come.
11
V: Have mercy on us, O Lord.
R: Have mercy on us.
The cross is laid upon the ground and Jesus is stretched upon His bed of
death. With divine dignity and forgiveness, he lets himself be nailed to the
cross. The blows are struck! The blood gushes forth!
Prayer: O Jesus, nailed to the cross, fasten our hearts to the cross, so that we
may be united with you until we yield up our souls to you.
For three hours, Jesus has hung upon His pierced hands. His blood has run in
streams down his body, and onto the ground. In the midst of excruciating
suffering, he has pardoned his murderers, given heaven to the good thief, and
committed his blessed mother to his beloved disciple’s care. His mission of
love has been accomplished. He bows his head and gives up his Spirit to
God.
Prayer: O Jesus, we devoutly embrace your saving cross, on which you died
so that we may have eternal life. We hail your cross, and lovingly accept our
own.
12
Our Father … Hail Mary … Glory Be …
The multitudes have left the hill of Calvary. There is no one except the
beloved disciple of Jesus and the holy women with Mary, the mother of
Jesus. Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus take down the body of Jesus from
the cross and place him in the arms of his afflicted mother.
Prayer: O Mary, mother of Jesus, your grief was so great, being a helpless
witness to the savage way your Son was put to death. By his death and
resurrection, we have become your children in Jesus. Help us by your
intercession to be like your son Jesus.
Our Father … Hail Mary … Glory Be …
The disciples take the body of her dear beloved Son Jesus from his mother,
and place it in the tomb. The tomb is closed and in it the lifeless body
remains until the hour of its glorious resurrection.
Prayer: Lord, Your suffering is over. You have triumphed, though in the eyes
of men, you may seem to have failed. Sin, death and hell have been
13
conquered. The world is Yours, I am Yours. Be the King of my heart. I
surrender myself to your Holy Will. May Your kingdom come.
Concluding Prayer
Heavenly Father, we have contemplated your Son, Jesus, on his Way of the
Cross, in his Spirit which you have gifted to us. We accept our way of the
cross. We know it will lead us to, where it led him to, our resurrection with
him. We thank You for the joy of this vision of faith.

THE WAY OF THE SEVEN SORROWS OF THE
BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
OPENING PRAYER
The Third Sorrow: The Loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple
I grieve for thee, O Mary most sorrowful, in those anxieties which tried thy
troubled heart at the loss of thy dear Jesus. Dear Mother, by thy heart so full
of anguish, obtain for me the virtue of chastity and the gift of knowledge.
1 Our Father … 7 Hail Mary
15
The Fourth Sorrow: Mary Meets Jesus on the Way to Calvary
I grieve for thee, O Mary most sorrowful in the consternation of thy heart at
meeting Jesus as he carried His Cross. Dear Mother, by thy heart so troubled,
obtain for me the virtue of patience and the gift of fortitude.
1 Our Father … 7 Hail Mary
CONCLUDING PRAYER
Let us Pray: Let intercession be made for us, we beseech Thee, O Lord Jesus
Christ, now and at the hour of our death, before the throne of Thy mercy, by
the Blessed Virgin Mary, Thy Mother, whose most holy soul was pierced by

a sword of sorrow in the hour of Thy bitter Passion. Through Thee, Jesus
Christ, Savior of the world, Who with the Father and the Holy Ghost lives
and reigns, world without end. Amen.

Mary.
INTRODUCTION PRAYER
My God, I offer You this rosary for Your glory, so I may honor Your holy
Mother, the Blessed Virgin, and so I can share and meditate upon her
suffering. I humbly beg You to give me true repentance for all my sins. Give
me wisdom and humility so that I may receive all the indulgences contained
in this prayer.
ACT OF CONTRITION
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my
sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell; but most of all
because they offend Thee, my God, Who are all good and deserving of all my
love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to sin no more, and to
avoid the near occasion of sin. Amen.
Begin with each Sorrow on the 7 large beads then pray one "Our Father",

INVOCATION AFTER EACH SORROW
19
Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world,
spare us, Lord.
Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world,
graciously hear us, Lord.
Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world,
have mercy on us.
V. Let us pray.
O God, when your Son was raised on the cross, you willed that his sorrowing
Mother be near to him. Like her, may we be united to the passion of Christ
and share in the glory of his resurrection. Where He lives and reigns forever
and ever. Amen.
CLOSING PRAYER
Lord Jesus, we now implore, both for the present and for the hour of our
death, the intercession of the most Blessed Virgin Mary, Thy Mother, whose
holy soul was pierced at the time of Thy Passion by a sword of grief. Grant us
this favor, O Savior of the world, Who lives and reigns with the Father and
the Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen.
Mary, who was conceived without sin and who suffered for us, pray for us!
Conclude the Chaplet with three (3) Hail Mary's, for the tears shed by our
Sorrowful Mother.

STABAT MATER
Quis est homo qui non fleret, Is there one who would not weep,
matrem Christi si vidéret whelmed in miseries so deep,
in tanto supplício? Christ's dear Mother to behold?
Pro peccátis suæ gentis For the sins of His own nation,
vidit Iésum in torméntis, She saw Jesus wracked with torment,
et flagéllis súbditum. All with scourges rent:
Most holy Virgin and Queen of Martyrs, Mary, would that I could be in
Heaven, there to contemplate the honours rendered to thee by the Most Holy
Trinity and by the whole Heavenly Court!
But since I am still a pilgrim in this vale of tears, receive from me, thy
unworthy servant and a poor sinner, the most sincere homage and the most
perfect act of vassalage a human creature can offer thee.
Since then, O Dear Mother, I now compassionate thy Dolors, and rejoice in
seeing thee glorified, do thou also have compassion on me, and reconcile me
to thy Son Jesus, that I may become thy true and loyal son (daughter); come
on my last day and assist me in my last agony, even as thou wert present at
the Agony of thy Divine Son Jesus, that from this painful exile I may go to
Heaven, there to be made partaker of thy glory. Amen.

THE SEVEN PENITENTIAL PSALMS
Pope Innocent III (1198-1216) decreed the recitation of the Seven Penitential
Psalms during the Season of Lent. Pope St. Pius V (1566 – 1572) specified
their use on all Fridays of Lent.
Antiphon: Remember, not O Lord our or our parents' offences: neither take
vengeance of our sins.
PSALM 6
Lord do not reprove me in Thy wrath, nor in Thy anger chastise me.
Have mercy on me, Lord, for I am weak, heal me, Lord, for my body is
in torment.
And my soul is greatly troubled, but Thou, O Lord, how long?
Turn to me, O Lord, and deliver my soul; save me on account of Thy
mercy. For who amongst the dead remembers Thee, who of the dead
will tell of Thee?
I have suffered and wept, every night have I washed my bed and
drenched my blanket with my tears.
My eyes are filled with grief, I have grown feeble in the midst of my
enemies.
Leave me, all you who do evil, for the Lord has heard the sound of my
weeping.
The Lord has heard my appeal, the Lord has accepted my prayer.
24
May my enemies be put to shame and come to ruin. May they be turned
away and be swiftly put to shame.
Glory be …
PSALM 31
Blessed is he whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.
Blessed is the man to whom the Lord hath not imputed sin, and in
whose spirit there is no guile.
Because I was silent my bones wasted away, as I cried out all day.
For day and night Thy hand was heavy upon me: I am twisted in my
affliction whilst the thorn is fastened upon me.
I have acknowledged my sin to Thee, and my guilt I have not
concealed.
I said "I will confess my injustice against myself to the Lord:" and
Thou hast forgiven the wickedness of my sin.
For this shall every one that is holy pray to Thee in due time.
Though in a flood of many waters, they shall not reach him.
Thou art my refuge, from the tribulation which surrounds me: my joy,
deliver me from those surrounding me.
I will give thee understanding, and I will instruct thee in the way in
which thou shalt walk: I will fix my eyes upon thee.
Do not become like the horse and the mule, who have no
understanding. With bit and bridle bind them fast, else they will not
come near to thee.
Many are the sorrows of the sinner, but mercy shall surround him that
hope in the Lord.
Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, ye just, and glory, all ye of righteous
heart.
Glory be…
25
PSALM 37
Glory be …
27
For if Thou didst desire sacrifice, I would have indeed given it, with a
burnt offering Thou art not pleased.
A sacrifice to God is an afflicted spirit, a contrite and humbled heart, O
God, Thou shalt not despise.
Deal favorably, O Lord, in Thy good will with Sion that the walls of
Jerusalem may be built up.
Then shalt Thou accept the sacrifice of justice, oblations and whole
burnt offerings, then shall they lay calves upon Thy altar.
Glory be …
PSALM 101
28
For her stones have pleased Thy servants: and her dust moves them to
pity. All the Gentiles shall fear Thy name, O Lord, and all the kings of
the earth Thy glory.
For the Lord hath built up Sion: and He shall be seen in His glory.
He hath regarded the prayer of the humble: and he hath not despised
their prayer.
Let these things be written for the next generation: and the people that
shall be created will praise the Lord:
For he hath looked down from his sanctuary on high: from heaven the
Lord hath looked upon the earth, that he might hear the groans of those
imprisoned that he might release the children of the dead:
That they may declare the name of the Lord in Sion: and His praise in
Jerusalem; when the people assembled together, and kings, that they
may serve the Lord. He hath broken my strength in the way, He hath
cut short my days.
I shall say: "My God take me not away in the midst of my days: Thy
years are for generations and generations.
In the beginning, O Lord, Thou foundedst the earth: and the heavens
are the works of thy hands.
They shall perish but Thou shalt remain: and all of them shall grow old
like a garment:
And like clothing Thou shalt change them, and they shall be changed.
But Thou art always the same, and Thy years have no end.
The children of Thy servants shall abide and their offspring shall be
established in Thy presence.
Glory be ...
29
PSALM 129: DE PROFUNDIS
Out of the depths have I cried unto Thee, O Lord: Lord hear my voice.
Let Thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplication.
If Thou, Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?
But there is forgiveness with Thee: because of Thy law I wait for Thee,
O Lord.
My soul wait on His word: my soul hope in the Lord.
From the morning watch even until night let Israel hope in the Lord:
For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him is plentiful redemption.
And He shall redeem Israel, from all their iniquities.
Glory be ...
PSALM 142
Glory be ...
Antiphon: Remember, not O Lord our or our parents' offences: neither take
vengeance of our sins.

THE CANTICLE OF THE PASSION
OF ST. CATHERINE D’RICCI
St. Catherine D’Ricci experienced the stigmata and every Thursday-Friday
accompanied Jesus in His Passion. The Canticle of the Passion was revealed
to Catherine immediately after her first great ecstasy of the Passion. Our
Lady desired Catherine to spread it as a form of prayer and contemplation
pleasing to Our Lord.
My friends and My neighbors * have drawn near and stood against Me.
I was delivered up and came not forth; * My eyes languished through
poverty.
And my sweat became as drops of blood, * trickling down and upon the
ground.
For many dogs have encompassed Me * the council of the malignant
hath besieged Me.
I have given My body to the strikers * and My cheeks to them that
plucked them.
I have not turned away My face from them that rebuked Me * and spit
upon Me.
For I am ready for scourges, * and My sorrow is continually before Me.
The soldiers, plaiting a crown of thorns, placed it upon My head.
They have dug My hands and feet; * they have numbered all My bones.
32
And they gave Me gall for My food; * and in My thirst, they gave me
vinegar to drink.
All they that saw Me laughed Me to scorn; * they have spoken with lips
and wagged their heads.
They have looked and stared upon Me; * they parted My garments
among them and upon My vesture they cast lots.
Into Thy hands I commend My spirit; * Thou has redeemed me, O God
of truth.
Be mindful, O Lord, of Thy servants, * when Thou shalt come into Thy
kingdom.
And Jesus having cried out with a loud voice * gave up the ghost.
The mercies of the Lord * I will sing for all eternity.
Surely He hath borne our infirmities * and carried our sorrows.
He was bruised for our sins.
All we, like sheep, have gone astray; * every one hath turned aside into
his own way.
For the Lord hath placed upon him * the iniquities of us all.
Arise, why sleepest Thou, O Lord? * Arise and cast us not off to the
end.
Behold, God is my Savior, * I will deal confidently, and will not fear.
We beseech Thee, O Lord, help Thy servants * whom Thou hast
redeemed with Thy Precious Blood.
Look down, we beseech Thee, O Lord, on this Thy family for which Our
Lord Jesus Christ did not hesitate to be delivered into the hands of the
wicked, and suffer the torments of the Cross.

NOVENA TO THE HOLY FACE OF JESUS
(In preparation for Shrove Tuesday [Tuesday before Ash Wednesday], also
known as the Feast of the Holy Face of Jesus)
O Most Holy and Blessed Trinity, through the intercession of Holy Mary,
whose soul was pierced through by a sword of sorrow at the sight of the
passion of her Divine Son, we ask your help in making a perfect Novena of
reparation with Jesus, united with His sorrows, love and total abandonment.
We now implore all the Angels and Saints to intercede for us as we pray this
Holy Novena to the Most Holy Face of Jesus and for the glory of the most
Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.
First Day
Have mercy on me, O God in your goodness, in your great tenderness wipe
away my faults; wash me clean of my guilt, purify me from my sin.
O most Holy Face of Jesus, look with tenderness on us who are sinners. You
are a merciful God, full of love and compassion. Keep us pure of heart, so
that we may see Thee always. Mary, our mother, intercede for us. Saint
Joseph, pray for us. Through the merits of your precious blood and your Holy
Face, O Jesus, grant us our petition, …Pardon and mercy.
34
Prayer to Our Almighty Father
(St. Augustine)
Almighty Father, come into our hearts, and so fill us with your love that
forsaking all evil desires, we may embrace you, our only good. Show us, O
Lord our God, what you are to us. Say to our souls, I am your salvation,
speak so that we may hear. Our hearts are before you; open our ears; let us
hasten after your voice. Hide not your Face from us, we beseech you, O Lord.
Open our hearts so that you may enter in. Repair our ruined mansions, that
you may dwell therein. Hear us, O Heavenly Father, for the sake of your only
Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy
Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
Pray one (1) Our Father, three (3) Hail Mary’s, one (1) Glory Be.
May the most holy, the most sacred, the most adorable, the most unknown
and the most inexpressible Name of God be adored, praised, blessed, loved
and glorified, in heaven, on earth and in hell, by all creatures formed by his
sacred hand, and by the loving Heart of our Lord Jesus Christ in the most
Blessed Sacrament of the altar. Amen
Concluding Prayer
(Ven. Leo Dupont)
O adorable Face of my Jesus, so mercifully bowed upon the tree of the Cross
on the day of Thy Passion, for the salvation of men, now again, incline in
Thy pity toward us poor sinners; cast upon us a look of compassion, and
receive us to the kiss of peace. Amen.
O Lord Jesus Christ, in presenting ourselves before Thy adorable Face, to beg
of Thee the graces we most need, we beseech Thee, to give us above all
35
things the disposition of never refusing at any time to do what Thou requires
of us by Thy commandments and divine inspirations. Amen.
Second Day
My offenses truly I know them; My sin is always before me. Against you,
you alone, have I sinned; What is evil in your sight I have done.
Most Holy Face of Jesus, we are truly sorry that we have hurt you so much
by constantly doing what is wrong; and for all the good works we have failed
to do. Immaculate Heart of Mary, Saint Joseph, intercede for us, help us to
console the Most Holy Face of Jesus. Pray that we may share in the
tremendous love Thou hast for one another, and for the most Holy and
Blessed Trinity. Amen.
Through the merits of your precious blood and your Holy Face, O Jesus,
grant us our petition, …Pardon and mercy.
36
Prayer to The Holy Spirit
Come, Holy Spirit, Sanctifier, all powerful God of love, Thou who didst fill
the Virgin Mary with grace, Thou who didst wonderfully transform the hearts
of the apostles, Thou who didst endow all Thy martyrs with a miraculous
heroism, come and sanctify us, illumine our minds, strengthen our wills,
purify our consciences, rectify our judgments, set our hearts on fire and
preserve us from the misfortune of resisting Thine inspirations.
We consecrate to Thee our understanding, our heart and our will, our whole
being for time and for eternity. May our understanding be always submissive
to Thy heavenly inspirations and to the teachings of Thy Holy Catholic
Church, of which Thou art the infallible guide; may our heart be ever
inflamed with love of God and neighbor; may our will be ever conformed to
the divine will, and may our whole life be a faithful imitation of the life and
virtues of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, to whom with the Father and
Thee be honor and glory forever. Amen.
Pray one (1) Our Father, three (3) Hail Mary’s, one (1) Glory Be.
O Bleeding Face, O Face Divine, be every adoration Thine. (3 times)
Third Day
You are just when you pass sentence on me, blameless when you give
judgement. You know I was born guilty, a sinner from the moment of
conception.
O Jesus! Cast upon us a look of mercy; turn your Face towards each of us as
you did to Veronica; not that we may see it with our bodily eyes; for this we
do not deserve, but turn it towards our hearts, so that, remembering you, we
may ever draw from this fountain of strength the vigor necessary to sustain
the combats of life. Amen. our Mother Mary, and St. Joseph, pray for us.
Through the merits of your precious blood and your Holy Face, O Jesus,
grant us our petition, …Pardon and mercy.
37
All highest, glorious God, cast your light into the darkness of our hearts, give
us true faith, firm hope, perfect charity and profound humility, so that with
wisdom, courage and perception, O Lord, we may do what is truly your holy
will. Amen.
We salute you, through the Holy Face and Sacred Heart of Jesus, all you holy
Angels and Saints of God. We rejoice in your glory, and we give thanks to
our Lord for all the benefits which He has showered upon you; we praise
Him, and glorify Him, and offer you for an increase of your joy and honor,
the most Holy Face and gentle Heart of Jesus. Pray that we may become
formed according to the heart of God. Amen.
Pray one (1) Our Father, three (3) Hail Mary’s, one (1) Glory Be.
O Bleeding Face, O Face Divine, be every adoration Thine. (3 times)
Fourth Day
Indeed you love truth in the heart; then in the secret of my heart teach me
Wisdom. O purify me, then I shall be clean; O wash me, I shall be whiter
than snow.
O Lord Jesus, who has said, learn of me for I am meek and gentle of heart,
and who did manifest upon The Holy Face the sentiments of Thy divine
heart, grant that we may love to come frequently and meditate upon Thy
divine features. We may read there Thy gentleness and Thy humility, and
learn how to form our hearts in the practice of these two virtues which Thou
desires to see shine in Thy servants. Mary our Mother and St. Joseph, pray
for us.
Through the merits of your precious blood and your Holy Face, O Jesus,
grant us our petition, …Pardon and mercy.
38
Prayer in Honor of the Sorrows of The Blessed Virgin
O Most Holy and afflicted Virgin, Queen of Martyrs! Who stood beneath the
Cross, witnessing the agony of your dying Son, look down with a mother’s
tenderness and pity on us as we kneel before you to venerate your Sorrows
and place our requests, with filial confidence, in the sanctuary of your
wounded heart. Present them on our behalf to Jesus, through the merits of His
most sacred Passion and Death, together with your sufferings at the foot of
the Cross, and through the united efficacy of both, obtain the favor which we
humbly ask. To whom shall we go in our wants and miseries if not to you. O
Mother of Mercy, who having so deeply drunk of the chalice of your Son,
graciously alleviate the sufferings of those who still sigh in this land of exile.
Amen.
My Jesus, by the sorrows you suffered in your agony in the garden, in your
scourging and crowning with thorns, in the way to Calvary, in your
crucifixion and death, have mercy on the souls in Purgatory, and specially on
those that are most forsaken. Deliver them from the dire torments they
endure. Call them and admit them to your most sweet embrace in Paradise.
Amen.
Pray one (1) Our Father, three (3) Hail Mary’s, one (1) Glory Be.
O Bleeding Face, O Face Divine, be every adoration Thine. (3 times)
Fifth Day
Make me hear rejoicing and gladness, that the bones you have crushed may
revive. From my sins turn away your Face, and blot out all my guilt.
Holy Face of Jesus, Sacred Countenance of God, how great is your patience
with humankind, how infinite your forgiveness. We are sinners, yet you love

Hail Mary, Daughter of God the Father! Hail Mary, Mother of God the Son!
Hail Mary, Spouse of the Holy Spirit! Hail Mary, Temple of The Most Holy
Trinity! Hail Mary, our mistress, our wealth, our mystic rose, Queen of our
hearts, our Mother, our life, our sweetness and our dearest hope! We are all
thine, and all we have is thine. O Virgin blessed above all things, may Thy
soul be in us to magnify the Lord; may Thy spirit be in us to rejoice in God.
Place Thyself, O faithful Virgin, as a seal upon our hearts, that in Thee and
41
through Thee we may be found faithful to God. Grant, most gracious Virgin,
that we may be numbered among those who Thou are pleased to love, to
teach and to guide, to favor and to protect as Thy children.
Grant that with the help of Thy love, we may despise all earthly consolation
and cling to heavenly things, until through the Holy Spirit, Thy faithful
spouse and through Thee, His faithful spouse, Jesus Christ, Thy Son, be

Eighth Day
O rescue me, God my helper, and my tongue shall ring out your goodness. O
Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall declare your praise.
Most merciful Face of Jesus, who in this vale of tears was so moved by our
misfortunes to call yourself the healer of the sick, and the Good Shepherd of
the souls gone astray, allow not satan to draw us away from you, but keep us
always under your loving protection, together with all souls who endeavor to
console you.
Mary our Mother, intercede for us, St. Joseph, pray for us.
Through the merits of your precious blood and your Holy Face, O Jesus,
grant us our petition, …Pardon and mercy.
O glorious St. Peter, who in return for thy lively and generous faith, thy
profound and sincere humility and thy burning love, was honored by Jesus
Christ with singular privileges, and in particular, with the leadership of the
other apostles and the primacy of the whole church, of which thou was made
the foundation stone, do thou obtain for us the grace of a lively faith, that
shall not fear to profess itself openly in its entirety and in all of its
manifestations, even to the shedding of blood, if occasion should demand it,
and to the sacrifice of life itself in preference to surrender.
42
Obtain for us likewise a sincere loyalty to our Holy Mother the Church. Grant
that we may ever remain most closely and sincerely united to The Holy
Father, who is the heir of thy faith and of thy authority, the one true visible
head of the Catholic Church. Grant moreover, that we may follow, in all
humility and meekness, the Church’s teaching and counsels and may be
obedient to all her precepts, in order to be able here on earth to enjoy a peace
that is sure and undisturbed, and to attain one day in heaven to everlasting
happiness. Amen.
Pray one (1) Our Father, three (3) Hail Mary’s, one (1) Glory Be.
O Bleeding Face, O Face Divine, be every adoration Thine. (3 times)
Ninth Day
For in sacrifice you take no delight, burnt offering from me you would refuse,
my sacrifice a contrite spirit. A humbled, contrite heart you will not spurn. In
your goodness, show favor to Zion; rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Then you
will be pleased with lawful sacrifice, holocausts offered on your altar.
Sacred Face of our Lord and our God, what words can we say to express our
gratitude? How can we speak of our joy? That you have deigned to hear us,
that you have chosen to answer us in our hour of need. We say this because
we know that our prayers will be granted. We know that you, in your loving
kindness, listened to our pleading hearts, and will give, out of your fullness,
the answer to our problems.
Mary our Mother, intercede for us, St. Joseph, pray for us.
Through the merits of your precious blood and your Holy Face, O Jesus,
grant us our petition, …Pardon and mercy.
Most Holy Trinity, Godhead indivisible, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, our first
beginning and our last end. Since you have made us after your own image
and likeness, grant that all the thoughts of our minds, all the words of our
43
tongues, all the affections of our hearts and all our actions may be always
conformed to your most Holy Will, so that that after having seen you here on
earth in appearances and in a dark manner by the means of faith, we may
come at last to contemplate you face to face, in the perfect possession of you
forever in paradise. Amen.
Pray one (1) Our Father, three (3) Hail Mary’s, one (1) Glory Be.
O Bleeding Face, O Face Divine, be every adoration Thine. (3 times)
I salute You! I adore you and I love you, O adorable face of my beloved
Jesus, as the noble stamp of the Divinity! Completely surrendering my soul to
You, I most humbly beg You to stamp this seal upon us all, so the image of
God may once more be reproduced in our souls. Amen.
O Lord Jesus, we believe most firmly in You, we love You. You are the
Eternal Son of God and the Son Incarnate of the Blessed Virgin Mary. You
are the Lord and Absolute Ruler of all creation. We acknowledge You,
therefore, as the Universal Sovereign of all creatures. You are the Lord and
Supreme Ruler of all mankind, and we, in acknowledging this Your
dominion, consecrate ourselves to You now and forever. Loving Jesus, we
place our family under the protection of Your Holy Face, and of Your Virgin
Mother Mary most sorrowful. We promise to be faithful to You for the rest of
our lives and to observe with fidelity Your Holy Commandments.
We will never deny before men, You and Your Divine rights over us and all
mankind. Grant us the grace to never sin again; nevertheless, should we fail,
O Divine Saviour, have mercy on us and restore us to Your grace. Radiate
Your Divine Countenance upon us and bless us now and forever. Embrace us
at the hour of our death in Your Kingdom for all eternity, through the
intercession of Your Blessed Mother, of all Your Saints who behold You in
Heaven, and the just who glorify You on earth. O Jesus, be mindful of us
forever and never forsake us; protect our family. O Mother of Sorrows, by the
eternal glory which you enjoy in Heaven, through the merits of your bitter
44
anguish in the Sacred Passion of your Beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ,
obtain for us the grace that the Precious Blood shed by Jesus for the
redemption of our souls, be not shed for us in vain. We love you, O Mary.
Embrace us and bless us, O Mother. Protect us in life and in death. Amen.
Glory be …

NOVENA TO OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST,
SEÑOR ECCE HOMO
(The Feast of the Our Lord Jesus Christ, Señor Ecce Homo of Cebu is
commemorated on Shrove Tuesday [Tuesday before Ash Wednesday])
May the glorious passion of our Lord Jesus Christ + bring us to the joys of
paradise. Amen.
NOVENA PRAYER
Lord Jesus Christ, true God and true Man, our first parents Adam and Eve
disobeyed the will of the Father and so sin and death entered the world. By
your obedience to the will of the Father, you willingly underwent your
Passion and Death for the salvation of Mankind and through your glorious
Resurrection has accomplished our redemption. As we make this Novena,
we remember the many sufferings you have endured for us.
46
Through your Most Holy Wounds, heal us of all our infirmities and give us
health of mind, body and soul and through your Most Glorious Passion, bring
us all to the joys of Paradise. Amen.
Let us pray.
Almighty and eternal God, who has appointed your only-begotten Son to be
the Savior of the world through his Passion, Death and Resurrection, grant
that we may so venerate this price of our salvation, and by its might be so
defended upon on earth from the evils of this present life, that in Heaven we
may rejoice in its everlasting fruit. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity
of the Holy Spirit, world without end. Amen.
48
CLOSING PRAYER
Lord Jesus Christ, you are the Sinless Innocent One, yet you willingly took
upon yourself all the sins of humanity: past, present and future. For our sake,
you willingly accepted death, death on the Cross. You are our Merciful
Savior, who unlike Pilate, will not wash your hands of us nor will you
condemn us. Look upon us poor sinners who humbly beg for your
forgiveness for our many sins and iniquities. Grant that we may be merciful
and compassionate to our fellowmen as you are merciful and compassionate
to us. Look upon us redeemed by your Most Precious Blood and saved by
your loving obedience to the will of the Father: grant that we too, following
your example, may be obedient and open to the will of the Father in heaven.
Grant the prayers and petitions that we, your brothers and sisters, present to
you this day. At the end of our journey here on earth, may we be numbered
among the saints and blessed in heaven where you live and reign together
with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYERS FOR REPRATION TO THE
BLESSED SACRAMENT
(Thursday after Sexagesima Sunday is dedicated for Acts of Reparation for
the Sacrileges Committed against the Blessed Sacrament.)
(Taken from the Mass for the Feast of Reparation for offenses committed
against the Blessed Sacrament)
An indulgence of 200 days to every one who, with contrition for his sins and
with devotion, says the following Act of Reparation to Jesus in the Blessed
Sacrament, which it is the practice of the religious of this order to say each in
her turn in the hour of her adoration.
Jesus, my God, my Saviour, true God and true Man, with that most profound
homage with which the faith itself inspires me, I adore and love Thee with
my whole heart, enclosed in the most august Sacrament of the Altar, in
reparation for all the acts of irreverence, profanation, and sacrilege, which I
may ever have been so unhappy as to have committed, as well as for all such
51
like acts that ever have been done, or which may be done, though God forbid
they should be, in ages yet to come.
I adore Thee, therefore, my God, not indeed as Thou deservest, nor as much
as I am bound to adore, but as far as I am able; and I would that I could adore
Thee with all the perfection of which all reasonable persons are capable.
Meantime I purpose now and ever to adore Thee, not only for those Catholics
who adore Thee not, and love Thee not, but also in the stead of, and for the
conversion of all heretics, schismatics, impious atheists, blasphemers,
impostors, Mahometans, Jews, and idolaters.
Jesus, my God, mayest Thou be ever known, adored, loved, and praised every
moment, in the most holy and divine Sacrament. Amen.
52
Sacred Host, flung into the mud and trampled underfoot, *
Sacred Host, dishonored by unfaithful priests, *
Sacred Host, forgotten and abandoned in Thy churches, *
*Have Mercy on us
That it may please Thee to increase in all Christians the reverence due to this
adorable Mystery, **
That it may please Thee to manifest the Sacrament of Thy Love to heretics,**
That it may please Thee to grant us the grace to atone for their hatred by our
burning love for Thee, **
That it may please Thee that the insults of those who outrage Thee may rather
be directed against ourselves, **
That it may please Thee graciously to receive this our humble reparation, **
That it may please Thee to make our adoration acceptable to Thee, **
* We offer Thee our reparation.
** We beseech Thee, hear us.
53
Pure Host, hear our prayer. Holy Host, hear our prayer.
Immaculate Host, hear our prayer.
Let Us Pray, O Lord Jesus Christ, Who dost deign to remain with us in Thy
wonderful Sacrament to the end of the world, in order to give to Thy Father,
by the memory of Thy Passion, eternal glory, and to give to us the Bread of
life everlasting: Grant us the grace to mourn, with a heart full of sorrow, over
the injuries which Thou hast received in this adorable Mystery, and over the
many sacrileges which are committed by the impious, by heretics and by bad
Catholics. Inflame us with an ardent zeal to repair all these insults to which,
in Thine infinite mercy, Thou hast preferred to expose Thyself rather than
deprive us of Thy Presence on our altars, Who with God the Father and the
Holy Spirit livest and reignest one God, world without end. Amen

PRAYERS IN HONOR OF THE PASSION OF
OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST
PRAYER TO OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST IN THE GARDEN OF
GETSEMANE
Christ was made obedient for the ninth, even to death, and the death of the
cross, for which reason God also exalted him and gave him a name which is
above every name.
Let us pray: Look, we beseech Thee, O Lord, upon this family, for which our
Lord Jesus Christ did not hesitate to be delivered into the hands of the
wicked, and to suffer the torment of the Cross; who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Ghost, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, grant that I may aspire toward
Thee with all my heart, with yearning desire, with a soul ever a thirst for
Thee; that I may breathe in Thee alone, who art all sweetness and all delight;
and that my whole spirit and my inmost heart may long for Thee, their true
blessedness.
63
O most merciful Lord, engrave Thy Wounds upon my heart with Thy Most
Precious Blood, that I may read in them all Thy grief and all Thy love; and
may the memory of Thy Wounds ever abide in the secret heart, to excite my
most glowing love. Grant also that all creatures may grow vile in my eyes,
and be Thou alone sweet to my heart. Amen.
My divine Savior, what didst Thou become, when for love of souls Thou
didst allow thyself to be bound to the column? Oh, how literally was then
fulfilled the word of the prophet, that from head to foot. Thou should be all
one wound, and such as not to be recognized for what Thou was. What shame
when they stripped Thee of thy clothes! What torment under the tempest of
blows, multiplied without measure! What a profusion of blood from thy
streaming- wounds! But it was neither the injustice of the Roman governor
nor the cruelty of the soldiers that scourged Thee, but my sins. O miserable
pleasures which have cost Thee such pains! O hardness of heart, when,
knowing Thee to be tormented for my sake, I have gone on offending Thee!
From today, then, it shall be so no more. Bound to Thee with eternal bonds
and fastened with Thee to the column, as long as my life endures, I will make
satisfaction to thy offended justice. By the column to which Thou wast
bound, by the scourges which furrowed thy innocent flesh, by the blood Thou
didst shed in such abundance, have pity, O Lord, have pity, on me in my
desolation. Release me this day from the snares of the tempter and preserve
me from them forever; and at the end of this exile, receive me in heaven.
Amen.
Dear Lord, I am grieved when I consider Thy sad condition when Thou wore
the Crown of Thorns upon Thy hold Head. I desire to withdraw the thorns by
offering to the Eternal Father the merits of Thy Wounds for the salvation of
sinners. I wish to unite my actions to the merits of Thy Most Holy Crown, so
that they may gain many merits, as Thou hast promised. Amen.
64
PRAYER TO SEÑOR DE PASIENCIA
O Lord Jesus Christ, our Lord who You endured so much for the love of us:
You who said "learn from me that I am meek and humble of heart" (Mt.
11,29), give me the grace of patience to withstand long waiting periods, to
adapt to unforeseen events, to tolerate what bothers me and to live with my
limits.
65
Turn, O loving Father, thy regard upon me and bless me. O God of mercy,
have pity on me; pardon me, who am thy son; deal not severely with me; give
me tears of repentance; pardon me as Thou didst pardon the penitent thief;
watch over me from the height of Heaven and bless me. Amen.
Most loving Jesus, meek Lamb of God, I, a miserable sinner, salute and
worship the most Sacred Wound of Thy Shoulder on which Thou didst bear
Thy heavy Cross, which so tore Thy Flesh and laid bare Thy Bones as to
inflict on Thee an anguish greater than any other wound of Thy Most Blessed
Body. I adore Thee, O Jesus most sorrowful; I praise and glorify Thee, and
give Thee thanks for this most sacred and painful Wound, beseeching Thee
by that exceeding pain, and by the crushing burden of Thy heavy Cross, to be
merciful to me, a sinner, to forgive me all my mortal and venial sins, and to
lead me on towards Heaven along the Way of Thy Cross. Amen.
My crucified Jesus, mercifully accept the prayer which I now make to Thee
for help in the moment of my death, when at its approach all my senses
shall fail me. When therefore, O sweetest Jesus, my weary and downcast eyes
can no longer look up to Thee, be mindful of the loving gaze which now I
turn on Thee, and have mercy on me. When my parched lips can no longer
kiss thy most sacred wounds, remember then those kisses which now I
imprint on thee, and have mercy on me. When my cold hands can no longer
embrace thy Cross, forget not the affection with which I embrace it now, and
have mercy on me. And when, at length, my swollen and lifeless tongue can
no longer speak, remember that I called upon Thee now. Jesus, Joseph, Mary,
to you I commend my soul.
66
SALUTATION TO JESUS BLASPHEMED IN HIS PASSION
For every drop of Thy Precious Blood shed in Thy Passion, for every Wound
Thou didst bear in Thy sacred Body, for every blow and stripe and bruise, I
salute and bless Thee ten thousand times.
For every tear Thou didst shed, for every sigh Thou didst breathe forth, for
every sorrow Thou didst feel, i bless and salute Thee, O my sweetest Jesus,
ten thousand times.
For every fall along Thy way of sorrows, for every shrinking and sinking of
Thy human flesh, for every movement of Thy sacred hands and feet, I bless
and salute Thee ten thousand times.
For every drop of Blood that fell to the ground in Thy sweat of agony, for
every painful step of Thy weary feet, for every strong cry and tear wherewith
Thou didst offer Thy prayer and Thy supplication to Thy Father, I bless and
salute Thee, O meekest Jesus, ten thousand times.
For every Wound with which Thy Sacred Body was torn in Thy scourging,
for every thorn of Thy cruel crown which entered Thy flesh, for all the
loathsome spitting with which Thy Sacred Person was defiled, I salute and
bless Thee, O most gentle Jesus, ten thousand times.
For every cord with which Thou was bound, for every reproach wherewith
Thy Soul was saturated, for every impious greeting of scorn with which Thou
was insulted, I salute and bless Thee ten thousand times.
For every false charge brought against Thee, for every foul and impious lie
uttered to disgrace Thee, for every unjust sentence pronounced upon Thee. I
bless and salute Thee, O sinless Jesus, ten thousand times.
67
Would, O most gracious Jesus, that I could multiply these my salvations and
praises ten thousand times, ten thousand-fold and offer them to Thee every
hour of my life that I might thereby efface and make amends for all the
insults, the contumely, and the blasphemy hurled against Thee, my sweetest
Redeemer!
I beseech Thee, would my heart with sympathy for Thy Passion, and
evermore keep alive its memory within me. I pray Thee, despise not the
desire nor the sighs of Thy poor creature, but according to Thy own essential
goodness, deign to ratify and accept them. Amen.
Praise be to Thee, O Jesus Christ, for the most sacred wound in thy Right
Hand. By this adorable wound, and by thy most sacred Passion, pardon me
all the sins I have committed against Thee in thought, word and deed, and all
negligence in thy service, and all sensuality for which I have been to blame
whether asleep or awake. Grant that I may be able to recall with devotion thy
most pitiful death and sacred wounds; grant me the grace to mortify my body,
and so to offer a pledge of my gratitude to Thee, who livest and reignest
world without end. Amen.
Praise and glory be to Thee, O sweetest Jesus Christ, for the most sacred
wound in thy Left Hand. By this adorable wound, have mercy on me, and
deign to root out of my heart everything displeasing to Thee. Give me the
victory over thy perverse enemies, so that with thy grace I may be able to
overcome them; and by the merits of thy most pitiful death save me from all
the dangers of my present and future life; and then, grant that I may share thy
glory in heaven, who livest and reignest for ever and ever. Amen.
68
Our Father... Hail Mary…
Praise and glory be to Thee, O sweet Jesus Christ, for the most sacred wound
in thy Right Foot; and by that adorable wound, grant me grace to do penance
for my sins. And by thy most pitiful death I devoutly beg of Thee to keep me,
thy poor servant, united, night and day, to thy holy will, and to remove afar
off every misfortune of body and soul. And when the day of wrath shall
come, receive me into thy mercy, and lead me to eternal happiness. Who
livest and reignest world without end. Amen.
Praise and glory be to Thee, most merciful Jesus Christ, for the most sacred
wound in thy Left Foot; and by this adorable wound, grant me the grace of a
full pardon, that with thine aid I may deserve to escape the sentence of eternal
reprobation. I pray Thee, moreover, by thy most holy death, O my loving
Redeemer that I may be able before my death to receive the sacrament of thy
Body and Blood, after confession of my sins, and with perfect repentance and
purity of body and mind. Grant that I may merit also to receive the holy
anointing, for my eternal salvation, O Lord, who liveth and reigneth world
without end. Amen.
Praise and glory be to Thee, most loving Jesus Christ, for the most sacred
wound in thy Side, and by that adorable wound, and by thy infinite mercy,
which Thou didst make known in the opening of thy Breast to the soldier St.
Longinus, and so to us all, I pray Thee, O most gentle Jesus, that having
redeemed me by baptism from original sin, so now by thy Precious Blood,
which is offered and received throughout the world, deliver me from all evils,
69
past, present and to come. And by thy most bitter death give me a lively faith,
a firm hope, and a perfect charity, so that I may love Thee with all my heart,
and all my soul, and all my strength; make me firm and steadfast in good
works, and grant me perseverance in thy service, so that I may be able to
please Thee always. Amen.
Almighty and everlasting God, who by the five wounds of thy Son, our Lord
Jesus Christ, hast redeemed the human race, grant to thy suppliants that we
who daily venerate those wounds may, by the shedding of his Precious
Blood, be freed from sudden and everlasting death. Through the same Christ
our Lord. Amen.
O Lord Jesus Christ, because of your infinite love for us, You willed to suffer
so many bitter pains for our sake through your Five Most Sacred Wounds.
We give You thanks for having preserved them in Your resurrected body as
an inexhaustible source of salvation. We ask You to grant us these favors.
(Mention your petitions)
Make us strong in professing our faith, fill us with love, and give us the grace
to receive the sacraments at the hour of our death and glory everlasting.
Amen.

PRAYER TO OUR LORD ON THE CROSS FOR
A HAPPY HOUR OF DEATH
When my cold hands can no longer embrace thy Cross, forget not the
affection with which I embrace it now, and have mercy on me.
And when, at length, my swollen and lifeless tongue can no longer speak,
remember that I called upon thee now.
Oh, Adorable Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, You have suffered death on the
Cross for our sins.
Oh, Holy Cross of Jesus, be my true light!
Oh, Holy Cross, fill my soul with good thoughts.
Oh, Holy Cross, ward off from me all things that are evil.
Oh, Holy Cross, ward off from me all dangers and deaths and give me life
everlasting!
Oh, Crucified Jesus of Nazareth, have mercy on me now and forever.
In honor of the Precious Blood of Jesus, his death, resurrection and ascension
which leads to everlasting life; true as Jesus was born on Christmas Day; true
as Jesus was crucified on Good Friday; true as Joseph and Nicodemus took
Jesus down from the cross and buried Him; true as Jesus ascended into
Heaven; may He preserve me from my enemies visible and invisible forever.
71
Oh, Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on me! Mary and Joseph pray for me.
Lord Jesus Christ, through Your suffering the Cross grant me strength to bear
my Cross without fear or dread and give me the grace that I may follow You.
Amen.

O Lamb of God, who takest away the sins of the world, Have mercy on us.

Lord Jesus, You became Man in order by your Passion and Death and the
draining of your Blood on the Cross, might prove to us how much You, our
God, love us. Protect us, dear Jesus, from ever running away from the sight

away from the cross, but welcome every opportunity to shed our blood in
spirit in union with your Precious Blood, so that, dying to ourselves in time
we might live with You in Eternity. Amen

PRAYER IN FRONT OF THE HOLY SHROUD OF TURIN
Lord Jesus Christ, through your passion, death and resurrection you redeem
us and raise us to new life in the Spirit. As we venerate the Holy Shroud,

all its lowly majesty.
Take us into your pierced Heart, opened on the cross for us. There,
transformed by your grace, may we be renewed, made holy and consecrated
to your service.

THE FIFTEEN PRAYERS OF
ST. BRIDGET OF SWEDEN
FIRST PRAYER
O Jesus Christ! Eternal Sweetness to those who love Thee, joy surpassing all
joy and all desire, Salvation and Hope of all sinners, Who hast proved that
Thou hast no greater desire than to be among men, even assuming human
nature at the fullness of time for the love of men, recall all the sufferings
Thou hast endured from the instant of Thy conception, and especially during
Thy Passion, as it was decreed and ordained from all eternity in the Divine
plan.
Remember, O Lord, that during the Last Supper with Thy disciples, having
washed their feet, Thou gavest them Thy Most Precious Body and Blood, and
while at the same time thou didst sweetly console them, Thou didst foretell
them Thy coming Passion.
Remember the sadness and bitterness which Thou didst experience in Thy
Soul as Thou Thyself bore witness saying: ―My Soul is sorrowful even unto
death.‖
Remember all the fear, anguish and pain that Thou didst suffer in Thy
delicate Body before the torment of the Crucifixion, when, after having
prayed three times, bathed in a sweat of blood, Thou wast betrayed by Judas,
Thy disciple, arrested by the people of a nation Thou hadst chosen and
76
elevated, accused by false witnesses, unjustly judged by three judges during
the flower of Thy youth and during the solemn Paschal season.
Remember that Thou wast despoiled of Thy garments and clothed in those of
derision; that Thy Face and Eyes were veiled, that Thou wast buffeted,
crowned with thorns, a reed placed in Thy Hands, that Thou was crushed
with blows and overwhelmed with affronts and outrages.
In memory of all these pains and sufferings which Thou didst endure before
Thy Passion on the Cross, grant me before my death true contrition, a sincere
and entire confession, worthy satisfaction and the remission of all my sins.
Amen.
SECOND PRAYER
O Jesus! True lіberty of angels, Paradіse of delіghts, remember the horror and
sadness whіch Thou dіdst endure when Thy enemіes, lіke furіous lіons,
surrounded Thee, and by thousands of іnsults, spіts, blows, laceratіons and
other unheard-of-crueltіes, tormented Thee at wіll. In consіderatіon of these
torments and іnsultіng words, I beseech Thee, O my Savіour, to delіver me
from all my enemіes, vіsіble and іnvіsіble, and to brіng me, under Thy
protectіon, to the perfectіon of eternal salvatіon. Amen.
THIRD PRAYER
O Jesus! Creator of Heaven and earth Whom nothіng can encompass or lіmіt,
Thou Who dost enfold and hold all under Thy Lovіng power, remember the
very bіtter paіn Thou dіdst suffer when the Jews naіled Thy Sacred Hands
and Feet to the Cross by blow after blow wіth bіg blunt naіls, and not fіndіng
Thee іn a pіtіable enough state to satіsfy theіr rage, they enlarged Thy
Wounds, and added paіn to paіn, and wіth іndescrіbable cruelty stretched Thy
Body on the Cross, pulled Thee from all sіdes, thus dіslocatіng Thy Lіmbs.
77
I beg of Thee, O Jesus, by the memory of thіs most Lovіng sufferіng of the
Cross, to grant me the grace to fear Thee and to Love Thee. Amen.
FOURTH PRAYER
O Jesus! Heavenly Physіcіan, raіsed aloft on the Cross to heal our wounds
wіth Thіne, remember the bruіses whіch Thou dіdst suffer and the weakness
of all Thy Members whіch were dіstended to such a degree that never was
there paіn lіke unto Thіne. From the crown of Thy Head to the Soles of Thy
Feet there was not one spot on Thy Body that was not іn torment, and yet,
forgettіng all Thy sufferіngs, Thou dіdst not cease to pray to Thy Heavenly
Father for Thy enemіes, sayіng: ―Father forgіve them for they know not what
they do.‖ Through thіs great Mercy, and іn memory of thіs sufferіng, grant
that the remembrance of Thy Most Bіtter Passіon may effect іn us a perfect
contrіtіon and the remіssіon of all our sіns. Amen.
FIFTH PRAYER
Through thіs abyss of compassіon and pіty, and especіally through the
goodness whіch Thou dіsplayed to the good thіef when Thou saіdst to hіm:
―Thіs day, thou shalt be wіth Me іn Paradіse.‖ I beg of Thee, O Sweet Jesus,
that at the hour of my death, Thou wіlt show me mercy. Amen.
78
SIXTH PRAYER
O Jesus! Beloved and most desіrable Kіng, remember the grіef Thou dіdst
suffer, when naked and lіke a common crіmіnal, Thou was fastened and
raіsed on the Cross, when all Thy relatіves and frіends abandoned Thee,
except Thy Beloved Mother, who remaіned close to Thee durіng Thy agony
and whom Thou dіdst entrust to Thy faіthful dіscіple when Thou saіdst to
Mary: ―Woman, behold thy son!‖ and to St. John: ―Son, behold thy Mother!‖
I beg of Thee O my Savіour, by the sword of sorrow whіch pіerced the soul
of Thy holy Mother, to have compassіon on me іn all my afflіctіon and
trіbulatіons, both corporal and spіrіtual, and to assіst me іn all my trіals, and
especіally at the hour of my death. Amen.
SEVENTH PRAYER
EIGHTH PRAYER
79
NINTH PRAYER
O Jesus! Royal vіrtue, joy of the mіnd, recall the paіn Thou dіdst endure
when, plunged іn an ocean of bіtterness at the approach of death, іnsulted,
outraged by the Jews, Thou dіdst cry out іn a loud voіce that Thou was
abandoned by Thy Father, sayіng: ―My God, My God, why hast Thou
forsaken me?‖ Through thіs anguіsh, I beg of Thee, O my Savіour, not to
abandon me іn the terrors and paіns of my death. Amen.
TENTH PRAYER
O Jesus! Who art the begіnnіng and end of all thіngs, lіfe and vіrtue,
remembers that for our sakes Thou was plunged іn an abyss of sufferіng from
the soles of Thy Feet to the crown of Thy Head. In consіderatіon of the
enormіty of Thy Wounds, teach me to keep, through pure love, Thy
Commandments, whose way іs wіde and easy for those who love Thee.
Amen.
ELEVENTH PRAYER
80
TWELFTH PRAYER
THIRTEENTH PRAYER
O Jesus! Strong Lіon, Immortal and Invіncіble Kіng, remember the paіn
whіch Thou dіdst endure when all Thy strength, both moral and physіcal, was
entіrely exhausted, Thou dіdst bow Thy Head, sayіng: ―It іs consummated!‖
Through thіs anguіsh and grіef, I beg of Thee Lord Jesus, to have mercy on
me at the hour of my death when my mіnd wіll be greatly troubled and my
soul wіll be іn anguіsh. Amen.
FOURTEENTH PRAYER
O Jesus! Only Son of the Father, Splendor and Fіgure of Hіs Substance,
remember the sіmple and humble recommendatіon Thou dіdst make of Thy
Soul to Thy Eternal Father, sayіng: ―Father, іnto Thy Hands I commend My
Spіrіt!‖ And wіth Thy Body all torn, and Thy Heart Broken, and the bowels
of Thy Mercy open to redeem us, Thou dіdst Expіre. By thіs Precіous Death,
I beg of Thee O Kіng of Saіnts, comfort me and help me to resіst the devіl,
81
the flesh and the world, so that beіng dead to the world I may lіve for Thee
alone. I beg of Thee at the hour of my death to receіve me, a pilgrim and an
exіle returnіng to Thee. Amen.
FIFTEENTH PRAYER
Through thіs bіtter Passіon and through the outpourіng of Thy Precіous
Blood, I beg of Thee, O Sweet Jesus, to receіve my soul when I am іn my
death agony. Amen.
CONCLUSION
O Sweet Jesus! Pіerce my heart so that my tears of penіtence and love wіll be
my bread day and nіght; may I be converted entіrely to Thee, may my heart
be Thy perpetual habіtatіon, may my conversatіon be pleasіng to Thee, and
may the end of my lіfe be so praіseworthy that I may merіt Heaven and there
wіth Thy saіnts, praіse Thee forever. Amen.

SEPTENARY IN HONOR OF OUR LADY OF
SORROWS
It is a holy custom of pious souls to prepare themselves for the greater feasts
by a novena, a triduum, or other like exercises. It will therefore be well for
the souls devout to Our Lady of Sorrows to prepare for her feast by the
septenary, or a 7- day novena, in honor of her compassion which was
traditionally celebrated every Friday before Palm Sunday.
O Most holy and sorrowful Mary, ever Virgin, Mother of God, and refuge of
sinners, although unworthy, because of my many sins, to be numbered among
thy children, yet encouraged by the words of thy most loving Son, when He
gave me to thee from the cross, and relying on thy great sweetness and
goodness, which incline thee to pity those in misery, I come to thee, because
by doing so I shall render myself pleasing and agreeable to thy divine Son. I
choose thee for my Mother, Protectress, and Queen. I beseech thee, most
gracious Lady, by the precious Blood of thy sweet Jesus and by thy bitter
Sorrows, to admit me into the number of thy servants and children. Assist me
in all thoughts, words, and works and regard me as thy possession.
Let that sword of grief which pierced thy heart penetrate mine, and fill me
with sorrow when I consider the multitude of my sins. Dear Mother, never let
me separate myself from God and from thee; never let this contract of love be
broken by my tepidity or my sin; obtain for me grace to amend my life, so
that through thy intercession I may enjoy eternal happiness. Amen.
83
An Act of Contrition
Most afflicted Mother of God, and most dear Lady, behold me before thee,
filled with grief at having offended thy beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ;
and confessing that the blows with which my sins bruised His body were the
swords which pierced thy heart, I sincerely repent that I have sinned against
my God and my Redeemer, who is infinitely good and perfect, and I
determine in all the sincerity of my soul never more to cause thee fresh
sorrow by sin. Sweet Mother, I humbly pray thee in thy goodness to gain for
me that I may keep my resolution, and never more lose the precious treasure
of divine grace. Amen.
Virgin most sorrowful, Mary, Mother of God and Mother of sinners, how
great was thy sorrow when, presenting thy most holy Son in the Temple, thou
didst hear from the mouth of holy Simeon the terrible prophecy that this
Child was set for a sign which would be contradicted, and that a sword
should pierce thine own soul, by which were foretold the cruel torments and
most painful death He would have to suffer, for our redemption. By this thy
bitter sorrow, O afflicted Mother, I humbly pray thee, obtain for me perfect
contrition for all my sins and offences against God. Pray also, I beseech thee,
for the intentions of this seven days; devotion, if they be for the glory of God
and the good soul, and implore eternal rest for the souls in Purgatory. Amen.
84
Second Day - The Flight into Egypt
Virgin most sorrowful, Mary, Mother of God and Mother of sinners, who,
learning from St. Joseph the message of the Angel, was obliged to arise and
take the Child by night, and to flee into Egypt, to avoid the perfidy of Herod,
who was seeking the life of thy Beloved One; by the cruel fears and anxieties
which rent thy maternal heart during that perilous journey, by the hardships
of thine exile, I humbly pray thee, obtain for me grace to flee all occasions of
sin, and to live in this transitory world as a pilgrim, whose heart is constantly
yearning after his eternal home. Pray also, dearest Mother, for the intentions
of this seven days devotion, if they be for the glory of God and the good of
my soul, and implore eternal rest for the souls in Purgatory. Amen.
Virgin most sorrowful, Mary, Mother of God and Mother of sinners, who, of
thy return from Jerusalem to thy humble house, didst lose thy dear Son Jesus,
and didst seek Him for three long days, grieving and sorrowing at the
privation of His sweet presence; by this thy bitter sorrow, I humbly pray thee,
obtain for me from thy Son, that I may keep Him close to my soul, and that,
observing His holy commandments, I may arrive at the enjoyment of celestial
happiness. Pray also, I beseech thee, for the intentions of this seven days’
devotion, if they be for the glory of God and the good of my soul, and
implore eternal rest for the souls in Purgatory. Amen.
Virgin most sorrowful, Mary, Mother of God and Mother of the sinners, who,
with broken heart, didst meet on the way to Calvary thy sweet Jesus crowned
with thorns, covered with wounds, fainting under the heavy weight of the
cross, and most cruelly treated by the Jews, who hurried Him to the place of
torments; by thy bitter sorrow, I humbly pray thee, ask of God to take away
85
my stony heart and to give me a heart of flesh, that with contrition and tender
compassion I may contemplate thy Son and thyself in this sorrowful meeting.
Pray also, I beseech thee, for the intentions in this seven days’ devotion, if
they be for the glory of God and the good of my soul, and implore eternal rest
for the souls in Purgatory. Amen.
Virgin most sorrowful, Mary, Mother of God and Mother of sinners, who
didst generously follow thy beloved Son to Calvary, didst behold Him
stripped of His garments, stretched of the cross, and nailed to it His most
precious blood flowing in abundance from His hands and feet and all His
wounds, and lastly didst see Him give up the ghost, after He had left us His
Seven Words as His last bequest; by His most dolorous Passion and thine
own intense sorrow, I beseech thee, sweet Mother, obtain for me such
compunction that my heart melt with sorrow and my eyes flow with tears for
having caused Him and thee so much suffering. Pray also, I beseech thee, for
the intentions in this seven days’ devotion, if they be for the glory of God and
the good of my soul, and implore eternal rest for the souls in Purgatory.
Amen.
Virgin most sorrowful, Mary, Mother of God and Mother of sinners, who,
standing steadfast at the foot of the cross, even after the death of thy most
sweet Son, didst behold a soldier open His side with a lance, and, after His
body was taken down from the cross, didst receive it into thy tender arms,
and didst bathe it with thy tears, when considering its beauty hidden under
the spitting, the dust, and His precious Blood, and how He had been wounded
for our iniquities, how He was bruised for our sins; by these thy burning
tears, by these thy bitter torments, I beseech thee, most loving Mother, obtain
for me that my heart being rent with thine by the most intense grief, I may be
86
pierced with bitter sorrow for my sins. Pray also, I beseech thee, for the
intentions in this seven days’ devotion, if they be for the glory of God and the
good of my soul, and implore eternal rest for the souls in Purgatory. Amen.
Virgin most sorrowful, Mary, Mother of God and Mother of sinners, whose
heart seemed to break when thou has to part with the lifeless body of thy
most holy Son, and didst see a great stone rolled to the door of the sepulcher
where it was laid; by the extreme desolation which thou didst feel when thus
left alone, entirely deprived of thy Beloved One, obtain for me the gift of
tears, that I may accompany and compassionate thee in thy sorrow, and above
all, that I may never more cause thee to weep by my sins, but may console
thee and please thy Son Jesus by a new and holy life. Pray also, I beseech
thee, for the intentions in this seven days’ devotion, if they be for the
glory of God and the good of my soul, and implore eternal rest for the souls
in Purgatory. Amen.
Here, raising your heart to God and His most holy Mother, form your
intentions.
87
Supplication to Jesus
O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, because Thou wilt have all men
to be saved, Thou was nailed to the cross and didst give the infinite price of
Thy precious Blood in atonement for their sins; and in order that we might
consider ourselves the children of the sorrows and the fruit of the tears of Thy
most holy Mother, Thou didst place us under her protection. We, therefore,
who are here joined, together to offer her this our grateful remembrance of
her pains and sorrows, implore Thy mercy; and as we proclaim ourselves to
be her servants, we hope that at the hour of death, she, our gracious Mother,
recognizing us as her children, will lead us to that heavenly country where
Thou with the Father and the Holy Ghost livest and reignest for endless ages.
Amen.

OPENING PRAYER
On this most sacred night when our Lord Jesus Christ instituted the
sacrament of the Eucharist and of Holy orders we accompany Him on his
journey towards the cross. The Eucharist and the cross connected to each
other for the Eucharist is the perpetual sacrifice of the cross offered daily for
us at the altar. Let us pray that as we visit the blessed sacrament in the 7
churches may we receive the graces necessary for our state of life. May we be
strengthened, healed and renewed by the Eucharist.
Let us pray: Behold O Good and sweet Jesus, We kneel before your
Eucharistic presence on this very day in which you instituted the Eucharist
the sacrament of love we accompany you on your journey towards the cross.
During this night dearest Lord, may we unite ourselves with you to love and
behold your presence as we journey on this pilgrimage. We pray that as we
adore your majesty may we bring your life-giving presence in the Eucharist
in our daily encounters. May we be for you alone so that in the end of our
earthly pilgrimage may our only desire is to behold your eternal beauty and
majesty, We ask this through Our Lord Jesus Christ who lives and reigns
with you in unity of the Holy Spirit, One God forever and ever. Amen.
90
THE FIRST CHURCH
―Then going out he went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the
disciples followed him. When he arrived at the place he said to them, "Pray
that you may not undergo the test.― After withdrawing about a stone's throw
from them and kneeling, he prayed, saying, "Father, if you are willing, take
this cup away from me; still, not my will but yours be done.― (And to
strengthen him an angel from heaven appeared to him. He was in such agony
and he prayed so fervently that his sweat became like drops of blood falling
on the ground.) When he rose from prayer and returned to his disciples, he
found them sleeping from grief. He said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Get
up and pray that you may not undergo the test.―
91
LITANY OF ADORATION
The following litany is said at every church.
For each invocation the response is: *To you be praise and glory forever.
Body of Christ conceived of the Blessed Virgin Mary*
Body of Christ, sacrificed on the cross*
Body of Christ, risen from the tomb*
Blood of Christ, price of our ransom*
Blood of Christ, the seal of new alliance*
Blood of Christ, drink of eternal life*
Heart of Christ, pierced through with the lance*
Heart of Christ, rich in mercy*
Heart of Christ, source of love*
Let us pray: Lord Jesus Christ, You gave us the Eucharist as the memorial of
your suffering and death. May our worship of this sacrament of your body
and blood help us to experience the salvation you won for us and the peace of
the kingdom where you live with the Father and the Holy Spirit, One God,
forever and ever. Amen.
92
THE SECOND CHURCH
Let us meditate on Jesus who was bound and taken before Annas
―So the band of soldiers, the tribune, and the Jewish guards seized Jesus,
bound him, and brought him to Annas first. He was the father-in-law of
Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. It was Caiaphas who had counseled
the Jews that it was better that one man should die rather than the people.
Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus. Now the other disciple was
known to the high priest, and he entered the courtyard of the high priest with
Jesus.‖
Eternal Son of the Father, Like the vine and its branches, we continually
receive the grace and life from you alone. We especially remember this in the
Holy Eucharist. Your body is the food which nourishes our spirit and makes
us live more according to your will. We pray, Jesus! Continue to nourish us
in body and spirit through the Bread of Life which you provide us in every
Mass we attend. Enliven in us the sacredness of this Sacrament that we may
continuously live as what you will. Amen.
93
THE THIRD CHURCH
Let us meditate on Jesus who was taken before the High Priest, Caiaphas
―The high priest rose and addressed him, "Have you no answer? What are
these men testifying against you?― But Jesus was silent. Then the high priest
said to him, "I order you to tell us under oath before the living God whether
you are the Messiah, the Son of God.― Jesus said to him in reply, "You have
said so. But I tell you: From now on you will see 'the Son of Man seated at
the right hand of the Power' and 'coming on the clouds of heaven.'― Then the
high priest tore his robes and said, "He has blasphemed! What further need
have we of witnesses? You have now heard what is your opinion?" They said
in reply, "He deserves to die!"
You loved us, Lord Jesus. You loved us until your death. You loved us as
friends. You loved us with an ultimate love. This is far greater than anything
we can feel or imagine! You commanded us to extend the same love to
others, without anything in reserve. Your love remains with us in the
Eucharist, this love we receive in every Communion when we eat your
precious Body and drink your sacred Blood. This is the great manifesto of
your love for us. May we live that love in serving others and following your
example. Amen.
94
THE FOURTH CHURCH
―So Pilate went back into the praetorium and summoned Jesus and said to
him, "Are you the King of the Jews?― Jesus answered, "Do you say this on
your own or have others told you about me?― Pilate answered, "I am not a
Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests handed you over to me.
What have you done?― Jesus answered, "My kingdom does not belong to this
world‖
Lord Jesus, Accept our sincere act of repentance for these and others
wrongdoings of the world, Lord Jesus. We promise to express our deep
concern and love for this memorial of your saving work for us. This might
lead us to become the enemies of the world, but we know you’ll never leave
us and that you’ll provide the Consoling Spirit that will make us energized
and prepared to defend your precious Body in words and actions. Guide us, O
Lord. We depend on your providence. Amen.
95
THE FIFTH CHURCH
―Herod was very glad to see Jesus; he had been wanting to see him for a long
time, for he had heard about him and had been hoping to see him perform
some sign. He questioned him at length, but he gave him no answer. The
chief priests and scribes, meanwhile, stood by accusing him harshly. Even
Herod and his soldiers treated him contemptuously and mocked him, and
after clothing him in resplendent garb, he sent him back to Pilate.‖
96
THE SIXTH CHURCH
―Pilate said to them, "Then what shall I do with Jesus called Messiah?" They
all said, "Let him be crucified!― But he said, "Why? What evil has he done?"
They only shouted the louder, "Let him be crucified!― When Pilate saw that
he was not succeeding at all, but that a riot was breaking out instead, he took
water and washed his hands in the sight of the crowd, saying, "I am innocent
of this man's blood. Look to it yourselves. "And the whole people said in
reply, "His blood be upon us and upon our children. "Then he released
Barabbas to them, but after he had Jesus scourged, he handed him over to be
crucified.‖
Lord Jesus, you are the eternal High Priest. In your sacrifice in Calvary, you
gave a perfect sacrifice which is sufficient for every time and place. Through
the hands of the priest, you continuously give yourself to us, and at the same
time offer yourself to the Father. We now pray and offer to you all your
priests who tirelessly give us your Body and Blood in every Mass we attend.
Unworthy as they may be, keep them pure and worthy in mind, word and
deed for them to really celebrate the Sacrament of Love. Amen.
97
THE SEVENTH CHURCH
―Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus inside the praetorium and
gathered the whole cohort around him. They stripped off his clothes and
threw a scarlet military cloak about him. Weaving a crown out of thorns, they
placed it on his head, and a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him,
they mocked him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!― They spat upon him and
took the reed and kept striking him on the head. And when they had mocked
him, they stripped him of the cloak, dressed him in his own clothes, and led
him off to crucify him.‖
Lord Jesus, you are in the Father, just as he is in you. In the Holy Eucharist,
you continuously manifest your total unity with us. This is one big grace that
no mere mortal can understand, except for those enlightened by your Word
and Grace. We pray you, Lord! Make us feel loved, strengthened, sanctified.
Never leave us after which, and guide us that you may be manifested in us
every time we communicate and work with others. May we be Eucharistic
People, a people of glory chosen for your service and divine mission here in
Earth. Amen.
98
FINAL PRAYER
The Tantum Ergo is sung and the following vesicles are said:

Mary, to whom Thou didst leave us as her adopted children! I unite all my
actions and all my sufferings to this adorable mystery; and I beseech Thee,
through Thy Divine merits, O Jesus! to vouchsafe to remember me at the
hour of my death, and to grant me pardon and mercy.

which issued therefrom, Have mercy on us. Mother of Sorrows, who didst
receive into thy maternal bosom the lifeless Body of Thy Son, taken down
from the cross, Pray for us.

Thyself into the hands of Joseph and Nicodemus to be buried which
foreshowed so well the generosity with which Thou dost abandon Thyself
into the hands of the priests, in order that Thou mayest Thy own self provide
the better for my wants. O my Jesus! grant me a share in the compassion of
Thy holy Mother, arm me with the courage of Thy two disciples against
human respect; but above all give me the ardent love of Mary Magdalen, in
order that I may seek Thee until I have found Thee risen again to die no
more. I unite all my actions and all my sufferings to this adorable mystery;
and I beseech Thee, through Thy Divine merits, O Jesus! to vouchsafe to

CONCLUDING PRAYER
My Beloved Jesus, You have called me to this Hour of your Passion to keep
You company—and I have come. I seem to have heard you, anguished and
sorrowful, praying, making reparation and suffering. With the most loving,
eloquent voices you were pleading for the salvation of souls. I tried to follow
You in everything. Now, I owe You my heartfelt ―Thank You‖ and ―I bless
You.‖
So I leave my being within Yours, to follow you in all you do; better still,
you will be so alive in me that I will leave my thoughts in you to defend you
from your enemies, my breaths as a faithful companion, my heartbeat to
recall my ―I love you,‖ and to give you the love that the others refuse to give
you; I will give you the drops of my blood to atone and make up the honor
and regard that your enemies deny you with their insults and offenses. I will
leave my entire being as a guard.
My dear love, while I must go about my duties, I will remain in your heart. I
am afraid to leave It. Is it not true that You will keep me here? Our heartbeats
will continually touch so that You will give me life, love, and close and
inseparable union with You.
Jesus, if You see that I am about to run from You at times, let your heartbeat
hasten in mine. Let your hands press me closer to your Heart; let your eyes
112
look at me and pierce me with rays of fire so that I may feel your presence
and immediately return to union with You.
O my Jesus, be on guard so that I may not exhaust You. I beg You to watch
over me. O give me a kiss, embrace me, and bless me! Give me your most
holy hands so that I can do all that I must do united with You! My Jesus, give
me the kiss of Divine Love, embrace me and bless me; I will kiss your
intoxicating Heart, and take my rest in You.
113
THE SEVEN LAST WORDS
(As prescribed at the Raccolta)
First Word: “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they are
doing.”
Jesus, my love! who for love of me didst hang in agony upon the Cross, there
by thy pains to pay the penalty of my sins, and didst open thy divine mouth to
obtain for me the pardon of them from Eternal Justice; O Jesus, pity all the
faithful who are now in their last agony, and pity me when I too shall be in
mine. By the merits of thy most Precious Blood shed for our salvation,
vouchsafe unto us all such lively sorrow for our sins that at our death we may
breathe forth our souls into the bosom of thy infinite mercy.
Glory be ... 3x
114
Second Word: “This day you shall be with Me in Paradise."
Jesus, my love! who for love of me didst hang in agony upon the Cross, and
with such readiness and bounty didst respond to the faith of the good thief,
who in thy humiliations acknowledged Thee to be the Son of God, and didst
assure unto him the Paradise prepared for him ; oh, pity all the faithful who
are in their last agony, and pity me when I too shall be in mine. By the merit
of thy most Precious Blood, wake up in our souls such firm and steadfast
faith as shall never waver at any suggestion of the evil one; that so we also
may obtain the prize of holy Paradise.
Glory be ...3x
Third Word: ―Woman, Behold your son! Son, Behold your Mother!"
Jesus, my love! who for love of me didst hang in agony upon the Cross, and,
unmindful of thine own sorrows, didst leave us thy own most holy Mother as
the pledge of thy love, that through her intercession we might seek Thee with
confidence in our greatest straits; have pity on all the faithful who are in their
last agony, and pity me when I too shall be in mine. By the inward
martyrdom of thy dear Mother, quicken in our hearts a firm hope in the
infinite merits of thine own most Precious Blood, that so we may escape the
sentence of eternal death, which we have merited by our sins.
115
Glory be ... 3x
V/. Have mercy on us, O Lord.
R/. Have mercy on us.
Fourth Word: “My God, My God, Why have you forsaken me?"
Jesus, my love! who for love of me didst hang in agony upon the Cross, and,
whilst suffering after suffering was heaped upon Thee, with all thy bodily
pain didst bear with infinite patience the most afflicting desolation of spirit,
being forsaken by thine Eternal Father; pity all the faithful who are in their
last agony, and pity me when I too shall be in mine. By the merits of thy most
Precious Blood, grant us all thy grace, that we may suffer with patience the
pain and anguish of our last agony, and so, joining our pains with thine, be
made partakers of thy glory in Paradise
Glory be ... 3x
Jesus, my love! who for love of me didst hang in agony upon the Cross, and
who, insatiable in thy thirst for insults and sufferings, didst will yet more and
116
more to suffer, that all men might be saved, showing thereby that all the
torrent of thy Passion was not enough to quench the thirst of thy most loving
Heart; pity all the faithful who are in their last agony, and pity me when I too
shall be in mine. By the merits of thy most Precious Blood, kindle in our
hearts such fire of charity, as may make them burn to be made one
with Thee for all eternity
Glory be ... 3x
Jesus, my love! who for love of me didst hang in agony upon the Cross, and
from this pulpit of truth didst announce that the work of our redemption was
finished that work through which, from children of wrath and perdition, we
become God’s children and the heirs of heaven; pity all the faithful who are
in their last agony, and pity me when I too shall be in mine. By the merits of
thy most Precious Blood, detach us wholly from the world and from
ourselves, and at the moment of our agony grant us grace to offer Thee with
all our hearts the sacrifice of our life, in expiation for our sins.
Glory be ... 3x
Jesus, my love! who for love of me didst hang in agony upon the Cross, and
who in accomplishment of the great sacrifice didst accept the will of thine
Eternal Father, commending thy spirit into his hands, and so didst bow thy
head and die; pity all the faithful who are in their last agony, and pity me
when I too shall be in mine. By the merits of thy most Precious Blood, give
us in our agony an entire conformity to thy divine will, that ready to live or
die as it please Thee, we may desire nothing so much as that thine
adorable will may ever find its full accomplishment in us.
Glory be ... 3x
Most Holy Mother of sorrows, by that intense martyrdom which thou didst
suffer at the foot of the Cross during the three hours of the agony of JESUS,
deign to aid us all, children of thy sorrows, in our last agony, that by thy
prayers we may pass from our bed of death to adorn thy crown in Paradise.
Let us pray.
O God, who for the salvation of the human race hast, in the most bitter death
of thy Son, made for us both an example and a refuge; grant, we beseech
Thee, that in the last peril, at the hour of our death, we may merit to obtain
the full effect of his great charity, and be made partakers of our Redeemer’s
glory. Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE LITTLE OFFICE OF THE PASSION
(Composed by St. Bonaventure)
MATINS
INVITATORY
P. Christ is captured and put to scorn, scourged and crucified. * Oh, come, let
us adore him.
F. Christ is captured and put to scorn, scourged and crucified. * Oh, come, let
us adore him.
PSALM 94
Come, let us praise the Lord with joy; let us joyfully sing to God our
Saviour. Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving, and make
a joyful noise to Him with psalms.
Christ is captured and put to scorn, scourged and crucified. Oh, come,
let us adore Him!
For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. For in His
hand are all the ends of the earth; and the heights of the mountains are
His. Oh, come, let us adore Him!
125
For the sea is His, and He made it: and His hands formed the dry land.
Come, let us adore and fall down: and weep before the Lord that made
us. For He is the Lord our God; and we are the people of His pasture
and the sheep of His hand.
Christ is captured and put to scorn, scourged and crucified. Oh, come,
let us adore Him!
Today, if you shall hear His voice, harden not your hearts: as in the
provocation, according to the day of temptation in the wilderness:
where your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works. Oh,
come, let us adore Him!
Forty years long was I offended with that generation, and I said: These
always err in their hearts. And these men have not known My ways: so I
sware in My wrath that they shall not enter into My rest.
Christ is captured and put to scorn, scourged and crucified. Oh come,
let us adore Him!
Glory be …

126
And may we constantly recall
The reed, the vinegar, the gall,
The anguish of that last dread hour,
Those Sacred Wounds whence graces shower.
NOCTURN
Antiphon : Men without mercy rose up against me, and they spared not my
life.
PSALM 2
Why have the Gentiles raged, and the people devised vain things?
The kings of the earth stood up, and the princes met together against
the Lord, and against His Christ.
Let us break their bonds asunder, and let us cast away their yoke from
us.
He that dwelleth in Heaven shall laugh at them: and the Lord shall
deride them.
Then shall He speak to them in His anger, and trouble them in His
rage.
127
But I am appointed King by Him over Sion, His holy mountain,
preaching His commandment.
The Lord hath said to Me: Thou art My Son. This day have I begotten
Thee.
Ask of Me and I will give Thee the Gentiles for Thine inheritance, and
the utmost parts of the earth for Thy possession.
Thou shalt rule them with a rod of iron, and shall break them in pieces,
like a potter's vessel.
And now, O ye kings, understand: receive instruction, you that judge
the earth.
Serve ye the Lord with fear: and rejoice unto Him with trembling.
Embrace discipline, lest, at any time, the Lord be angry, and you perish
from the just way.
When His wrath shall be kindled in a short time, blessed are all they
that trust in Him.
Glory be…
Antiphon: Men without mercy rose up against Me, and they spared not my
life.

But the soldiers took Jesus and led Him forth, and, bearing His own cross, He
went forth to that place which is called Calvary but, in Hebrew, Golgotha,
where they crucified Him and, with Him, two others, one on each side, and
Jesus in the midst. And Jesus said: Father, forgive them, for they know not
what they do. But Thou, Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.
℣. You are come out, as it were, to a robber, with swords and clubs, to
apprehend Me.
℣. I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you laid not hands on Me,
and lo!, you scourge Me and lead Me to be crucified.
℟. And when they had laid hands on Jesus and taken Him, He said to them:
℣. I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you laid not hands on Me,
and lo!, you scourge Me and lead Me to be crucified.
Blessing
P. May the sprinkling of Christ's Blood be our everlasting health and
protection.
F. Amen.

Third Lesson (St. John 19. 28-30)
Afterwards, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the
Scripture might be fulfilled, said: I thirst. Now there was a vessel set there
full of vinegar. And they, putting a sponge full of vinegar about hyssop, put it
to His mouth. Jesus, therefore, when He had taken the vinegar, said: It is
consummated. And, bowing His head, He gave up the ghost. But Thou, Lord,
have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.
℣. Darkness covered the earth, whilst the Jews crucified Jesus. And about the
ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice:
℣. My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me? And, bowing down His
head, He gave up the ghost.
℟. Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said: Father, into Thy hands I
commend My Spirit.
℣. And, bowing down His head, He gave up the ghost.
℟. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost,
℣. And, bowing down His head, He gave up the ghost.
LAUDS
Antiphon: Reproaches and terrors have I suffered at their hands; and the
Lord is with me as a mighty warrior.
How long, O Lord, wilt Thou forget me unto the end? How long dost
Thou turn away Thy face from me?
How long shall I take counsels in my soul, sorrow in my heart all the
day?
How long shall mine enemy be exalted over me? Consider, and hear
me, O Lord my God.
130
Enlighten mine eyes, that I never sleep in death, lest, at any time, mine
enemy say: I have prevailed against him.
They that trouble me will rejoice when I am moved: but I have trusted
in Thy mercy.
My heart shall rejoice in Thy salvation: I will sing to the Lord,Who
giveth me good things: yea, I will sing to the name of the Lord, the
Most High.

O Lord Jesus Christ, Who, at the hour of Matins, didst will to be betrayed,
captured, bound, scourged, buffeted and spit upon for the salvation of
mankind: make us, we beseech Thee, to receive reproaches and injuries with

Hymn
Antiphon: I turned not away My face from them that rebuked Me and spat

PSALM 42
Judge me, O God, and distinguish my cause from the nation that is not
holy: deliver me from the unjust and deceitful man.
For Thou art God my strength: why hast Thou cast me off? And why do
I go sorrowful whilst the enemy afflicteth me?
Send forth Thy light and Thy truth: they have conducted me, and
brought me unto Thy holy hill, and into Thy tabernacles.
And I will go in to the Altar of God: to God Who giveth joy to my
youth.
To Thee, O God, my God, I will give praise upon the harp: Why art
thou sad, O my soul? And why dost Thou disquiet me?
Hope thou in God, for I will still give praise to Him: the salvation of my
countenance, and my God.

condemned to eternal punishment, but may be found worthy to have
fellowship with Thy faithful in Heaven, Who livest and reignest, world

wast led forth to the torment of the cross for the salvation of the whole world:
we humbly beseech Thee that, by the power of Thy most holy Passion, Thou
mayest blot out all our sins, and bring us, in Thy mercy, to the glory of Thine
everlasting bliss, Who livest and reignest, world without end. Amen.

Little Chapter (I Peter 2. 23-24)

vinegar to be given Thee to drink: we humbly beseech Thee to enkindle Thy
fire in our hearts, and make us to thirst for the chalice of Thy Passion, Who
livest and reignest, world without end. Amen.

by His Passion.

Thy Father and, with the key of Thy death, didst vouchsafe to unlock the
gates of Paradise, grant to us, Thy unworthy suppliants, that, in the hour of
our death, our souls, through Thy mercy, may attain to Thee Who art the true

VESPERS
Antiphon. Thou art worthy, O Lord, to take the book and to open the seven
seals thereof, because Thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God in Thy
Blood.
PSALM 26
I will extol Thee, O Lord, for Thou hast upheld me: and hast not made
mine enemies to rejoice over me.
Lord, my God, I have cried to Thee: and Thou hast healed me.
141
Thou hast brought forth, O Lord, my soul from Hell: Thou hast saved
me from them that go down into the pit:
Sing to the Lord, O ye His saints: and give praise to the memory of His
holiness.
For wrath is in His indignation: and life, in His good will.
In the evening, weeping shall have place; and, in the morning,
gladness.
And, in mine abundance, I said: I shall never be moved.
Lord, in Thy favour, Thou gavest strength to my beauty.
Thou turnest away Thy face from me, and I became troubled.
To Thee, O Lord, will I cry: and I will make supplication to my God.
What profit is there in my blood, whilst I go down to corruption?
Shall dust confess to Thee, or declare Thy truth?
The Lord hath heard, and hath had mercy on me: the Lord became my
helper.
Thou hast turned for me my mourning into joy: Thou hast cut my
sackcloth, and hast compassed me with goodness:
To the end that my glory may sing to Thee, and I may not regret:
Lord my God, I will give praise to Thee forever.
Glory be..
Antiphon. Thou art worthy, O Lord, to take the book and to open the seven
seals thereof, because Thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God in Thy

143
Antiphon. Our Shepherd, the fountain of living water, is gone: for He laid
down His life for His sheep, and vouchsafed to die for His flock.
MAGNIFICAT
My soul doth magnify the Lord. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my
Saviour.
Because He hath regarded the humility of His handmaid. For behold,
from henceforth, all generations shall call me blessed.
Because He that is mighty hath done great things to me: and holy is His
name.
And His mercy is from generation unto generations, unto them that fear
Him.
He hath shown might in His arm: He hath scattered the proud in the
conceit of their heart.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the
humble.
He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich He hath sent
empty away.
He hath received Israel His servant, being mindful of His mercy:
As He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and his seed forever.
Glory be …
Antiphon. Our Shepherd, the fountain of living water, is gone: for He laid
down His life for His sheep, and vouchsafed to die for His flock.
Let us pray.
O Lord Jesus Christ, Who, according to the pious belief of the faithful, didst,
at the hour of Vespers, will to be taken down from the cross and laid dead in
the arms of Thy mother: grant, we beseech Thee, that, laying aside the burden
144
of our sins, we may be presented in the sight of Thy divine Majesty, Who
livest and reignest, world without end. Amen.
COMPLINE
Antiphon. They shall mourn for Him as for an only son: because the
innocent Lord is slain.
PSALM 87
Lord, the God of my salvation: I have cried before Thee in the day, and
also in the night.
Let my prayer come in before Thee: incline Thine ear to my petition.
For my soul is filled with evils: and my life hath drawn nigh to Hell.
I am counted among them that go down to the pit: I am become as a
man without help, free among the dead.
Like the slain sleeping in the sepulchres, whom Thou rememberest no
more: and they are cast off from Thy land.
They have laid me in the lower pit: in the dark places, and in the
shadow of death.
Thy wrath is strong over me: and all Thy waves Thou hast brought in
upon me.
Thou hast put away Thine acquaintance far from me: they have set me
an abomination to themselves.
I was delivered up, and came not forth: mine eyes languished through
poverty.
All the day I cried to Thee, O Lord: I stretched out my hands to Thee.
Wilt Thou show wonders to the dead: or shall physicians raise to life,
and give praise to Thee?
145
Shall anyone in the sepulchre declare Thy mercy: and Thy truth, in
destruction?
Shall Thy wonders be known in the dark: and Thy justice, in the land of
forgetfulness?
But I, O Lord, have cried to Thee: and, in the morning, my prayer shall
prevent Thee.
Lord, why castest off my prayer: why turnest Thou away Thy face from
me?
I am poor, and in labours from my youth: and, being exalted, have been
humbled and troubled.
Thywrathhathcome uponme: and Thy terrors hath troubled me.
They have come round about me like water all the day: they have
compassed me about together.
Friend and neighour Thou hast put far from me: and my acquaintance,
because of misery.
Glory be …
Antiphon. They shall mourn for Him as for an only son: because the
innocent Lord is slain.

Antiphon. Savior of the world, save us, Thou Who didst redeem us by Thy

NUNC DIMITTIS
Now Thou dost dismiss Thy servant, O Lord, according to Thy word, in

prepared before the face of all peoples: a light to the revelation of the

Antiphon. Savior of the world, save us, Thou Who didst redeem us by Thy

O Lord Jesus Christ, Who, at the last hour of the day, didst repose in the
tomb, and wast lamented by Thy sorrowful mother and the other holy
women: grant, we beseech Thee, that we may mourn for Thee with all the
devotion of our hearts, and, abounding with tears of compunction, we may,
with ardent desire, ever meditate upon Thy most glorious Passion, Who livest

VIGIL IN HONOR OF OUR LORD JESUS
CHRIST IN THE HOLY SEPULCHRE
ACT OF CONDOLENCE TO OUR LADY IN THE SILENCE OF HER
SOLITUDE
O Jesus, who in thy bitter Passion didst become the reproach of men and the
man of sorrows, I venerate thy sacred face on which shone the grace and
sweetness of the Divinity, now for my sake changed into the likeness of a
leper. But under this deformity I perceive thy infinite love, and I am
overwhelmed with the desire of loving Thee and making Thee beloved by all
men. The tears which stream from thy eyes seem as precious pearls, which I
love to gather up, in order to purchase with their infinite value the souls of
poor sinners.
148
O Jesus, thy face is the only beauty which ravishes my heart. I am content not
to see here below the sweetness of thy look, not to feel the ineffable delight
of a kiss of thy mouth; but oh! I beseech Thee print on me thy divine
likeness, and inflame me with thy love, so that it may rapidly consume me,
and I may soon come to see thy glorious face in Heaven. Amen.
My crucified Lord Jesus, I adore You, I love You, because, for love of the
Father, in the Holy Spirit, You have, by your Cross, redeemed the world. I
thank You for your love for me, for having suffered so much pain, taking
upon yourself my sins, sins which now I repent with all my heart.
To the wound in his right hand: Lord Jesus Crucified, in union with Mary
and with all the angels and saints, I adore the wound in Your right hand. I beg
You to bless the Church, your people, to bless the Pope and the Pastors who
are called to preach the Gospel and to celebrate the Eucharist.
To the wound in his left hand: Lord Jesus Crucified, in union with Mary
and with all the angels and saints, I adore the wound in Your left hand. I pray
for those who do not know your love, for those who refuse it, and for all who
don't want to be reconciled with You.
To the wound in his right foot: Lord Jesus Crucified, in union with Mary
and with all the angels and saints, I adore the wound in Your right foot. I pray
for all Christians and for persons who are consecrated to You: that all may
truly live their vocation to holiness, that all may truly live their vocation to
holiness and that your love may reign in every family.
Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be
149
To the wound in his left foot: Lord Jesus Crucified, in union with Mary and
with all the angels and saints, I adore the wound in Your left foot. I pray for
all who have died, and for all who are victims of hatred and violence. May
they be purified by your love and be united with You for ever.
To the wound in his side: Lord Jesus Crucified, in union with Mary and
with all the angels and saints, I adore the wound in Your side. I pray that
humility may find in your pierced heart the love which saves, the strength to
forgive and to reconcile and the comfort in suffering.
Mary, Immaculate, Mother of Jesus and Mother of us all, pray for us.
Jesus, my Lord and Savior, In union with You, I offer the Father, in the Holy
Spirit, Your bleeding and glorious wounds. May I see in You, hanging on the
Cross, the face of God. And may I yield to your love, loving my brothers and
sisters as You have loved them, pledged to the ideals of justice, unity and
peace!

Most dignified Mother of God who, being at the foot of the Cross with Jesus,
your Only begotten Son, saw him suffer, agonize and die, remaining alone

You know how to understand better than anyone my needs and afflictions.
You are Mother of God and can well alleviate them. You are Mother of men

who suffer so much alleviate my sorrows. You who are robed so sadly and
desolate, dispel my sadness.

PRAYER
O Lord, who to redeem the world and to free us from the pains of hell, didst
vouchsafe to be born amongst men, subject to pain and to death, to be
circumcised, rejected, and persecuted by the Jews, betrayed by Thy disciple
Judas with a sacrilegious kiss, and as a lamb, gentle and innocent, to be
bound with cords, and dragged in scorn before the tribunals of Annas,
Caiphas, Pilate, and Herod; who didst suffer Thyself to be accused by false
witnesses, torn by scourges, crowned with thorns, smitten with blows,
insulted with spittings, to have Thy divine countenance covered out of
contempt, to be many ways set at naught and outraged, to be filled with
reproaches and ignominies, and, last of all, to be stripped of Thy clothes,
nailed to and raised high upon a cross between two notorious thieves, to be
drenched with gall and vinegar, and then pierced with a lance, and so to
fulfill the mighty work of our redemption: Saviour most tender, by these Thy
many cruel sufferings borne by Thee out of Thy love for me, which I,
unworthy as I am, yet dare to contemplate, by Thy holy cross, and by Thy
bitter death, free the souls in Purgatory from the pains of hell and vouchsafe
to bring me to Paradise, whither Thou didst lend the penitent thief who was
crucified with Thee, my Jesus, who, with the Father and with the Holy Ghost,
livest and reignest God for ever and ever. Amen.
