Sustainable Development

Definition: trying to meet the needs of the present population without damaging the
ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Aim: trying to balance meeting consumer demand without ignoring environmental,


social and economic issues. Business can contribute by :

-reducing resources used for eg. lean production (limiting the amount of packaging)
-recycling materials such as water and unused part.
-develop new techniques and materials for pruduction
-using renewable sources of energy, eg. solar power
-reducing the amount of travel

Environmental Pressures of Opportunities


Business have to respond to environmental issues. This will cost money but also
opportunities.

Advantages of being ETHICAL:


-The buss. could be seen as a good employer by improving work conditions and
paying fair wages. It could then be easier to retain & recruit employees.

-Pressure groups campaign against buss. which exploit child labour and employees.
This damages their brand image and sales could be decrease.

-An ethical brand image can improve the bussiness's reputation. Customers can be
willing to pay more for ethical goods therefore increase sales.
