Forum on the text "Tendências atuais da pesquisa em LA"
Mensagem:
Read the text "Tendências atuais da pesquisa em Linguística Aplicada". After
reading the text, post in this forum arguments and conclusions that deny one of the
following misconceptions about Applied Linguistics:
Misconception 01: Applied Linguistics is an area subordinated to Linguistics, thus
not an idependent field of research.
Misconception 02: Applied Linguistics deals with foreign language teaching only.
Misconception 03: While Linguistics is a theoretical science (devoted to theory
creation), Applied Linguistics is a science devoted to the application of the theories
developed in Linguistics.

Misconception 02: Applied Linguistics deals with foreign language teaching only.
I do not agree with this statement because I realized that Applied Linguistics does not only deal
with foreign language teaching, but it also deals with the language and its use in the real world.
Applied Linguistics focuses in the problems of the use of the language and it tries to solve them.

Until today the applied linguistics is still classified by CNPq as subarea of linguistics, but we
know that this idea is outdated, because applied linguistics is interdisciplinary.
Applied Linguistics may be used in several areas such as: social communication, teaching,
linguistics, sociology, history, psychology , and many other areas of knowledge. It is not only the
application of linguistics or an area subordinated to Linguistics, but one subject that seeks
specific information on multiple areas of knowledge to solve a problem related to language.

Misconception 02: Applied Linguistics deals with foreign language teaching only.
Applied Linguistics had this conception in the begining, when it was focused on languages'
teaching and learning, but nowadays it deals with the use of the language in our life. Applied
Linguistics is considered nowadays as an interdisciplinary area, and its focus is solving human
problems, that come from language, as it is said in the text. AL deals with areas like Psychology,
Social C ommunication, Sociology, Linguistics, etc.

Great C omments! Applied Linguistics, as you have shown, is really a very broad science. Let's
see with the other students have to say...
Misconception 02: Applied Linguistics deals with foreign language teaching only.
Applied Linguistics is considered as an interdiciplinary fild, therefore,it is not only limited to the
studies of foreigns languages, but also in other areas related to its subjetcs and researches.

Applied linguistics is considered as a multidisciplinary field that interacts with many other areas,
not only with linguistics. Applied linguistics and linguistic study the language, but in different
perspectives. It is a mistake to say that applied linguistics handles only with foreign language
teaching, she also handles with teacher training, teaching practice, learning technologies and
other areas. Although the applied linguistics has emerged as an attempt to apply the theories of
linguistics, it today has become much more than that, applied linguistics goes beyond the
restricted and specific study of language, she is concerned with the practical issues of language:
acquisition of second or foreign languages, language teaching, language policy, multilingualism,
cross-cultural communication, maintenance of languages, and assessment and treatment of
language difficulties.

Misconception 02: Applied Linguistics deals with foreign language teaching only. How said
Marcuschi and Solomon Applied Linguistic analyzes all the problems related to formal and
structural aspects, communicative and interactive processes involving humans in their daily
activities. So it would not be possible to limit Applied Linguistics, as it encompasses a plethora of
concepts that are changing and are updated every time.

When Applied Linguistics arose it was conceived as a subfield of Linguistics and today it is thus
classified by C NPq as cited Lopes-Rossi (p.4), this connection is in the fact that both have as their
object of study the language, but this object is studied by both in different ways which makes the
AL has autonomy as an independent field study. The foreign language teaching has always been
an intense area of research in Applied Linguistics and in its appearance it turned primarily to the
teaching and learning language, but because of the language is a complex system containing
several other aspects, it has become and continues to become a vast field of research dealing
not only with foreign language teaching, ie, other issues became part of the range of research in
AL in the space of language use in the social reality of speakers. For a long time AL was seen as
an attempt to application of Linguistic theories, however, AL is not a science dedicated to the
simple application of Linguistic theories. At its conception it was seen that way because it dealt
only with the teaching/learning languages, with the expansion of its field of research the LA draw
its own theories and not just consume the theories of Linguistics.

formation, , new technologies in teaching, discursive practices in educational settings, etc,.
According to Moita Lopes (1996) and Kleiman (1998), there's a growing concern of Applied
Linguistics in investigating problems related to the language usage and how it influences social
practices.

Misconception 02: Applied Linguistics deals with foreign language teaching only.
The text makes us see that since its first moments, Applied Linguistics studied not only foreign
language, but native language as well. Applied Linguistics has a wide range and studying the
day-to-day language and the context in which this language is in, that's not something you can
reach by only studying a foreign language. And as C elani (1998, p. 136) says, Applied Linguistics
is researching oral, reading and writing skills on both native and foreign languages.
