Question 1
The following data set are measurements collected on the length of life (in weeks) of an
electronic component found in a mainframe computer:
129, 136, 96, 88, 112, 91, 80, 94, 80, 99, 79, 115, 77, 142, 90, 72, 121, 77, 131, 88, 98, 67, 75,
92, 67, 132, 119, 81, 101, 127, 93, 129, 68, 133, 84, 77, 112, 82, 117, 76, 132, 99, 138, 84, 101,
124, 84, 123, 84, 83, 97, 95, 84, 75, 58, 89, 103, 79, 89, 82, 73, 100, 115, 68, 135, 111, 87, 114,
91, 70, 79, 81, 95, 87, 87, 84, 100, 93, 87, 85, 97, 102, 78, 101, 98, 89, 97, 130, 109, 99, 96, 68,
118, 79, 93, 109.
Construct:
1. A stem and leaf plot of the data using Leaf Unit = 1.

2. Determine the forty fifth and the eighty fifth percentiles of the above data.
45th = 90, 85th = 121
3. Construct a Box Plot of the above data. You must clearly display two quartiles, the
median, and the inner and outer fences.
Median – 93

Inner fence = (y.25 − 1.5 × IQR, y.75+ 1.5 × IQR)

= (37.375, 154.375)

Outer fence = (y.25 − 3 × IQR, y.75+ 3 × IQR)

= (-6.5, 198.25)

4. Use the two graphical displays to report on any peculiarities or special features you
find in the data.
Min = 58, Max = 142, Q1 = 81.25, Q3 = 110.5, IQR = 29.25, N = 96

Question 2
A rope manufacturer manufactures ropes whose breaking strengths are known to be normally
distributed with a variance in strength of s2 = 144. A sample of nine ropes yielded the following
breaking strengths (in pounds):
193.43, 180.76, 185.81, 192.54, 181.01, 181.03, 185.12, 173.66, 215.73
Test, at α = 0.05, that the mean breaking strength μ is greater than 179 lbs. Check your answer
using MINITAB.
H0 : μ = 179
H1 : μ > 179

Sample mean X = 187.6767, n = 9, s = 12

Z0 = 2.1692
Z0.95 = 1.65
Z0 > Z0.05
Therefore H0 is false,
Therefore the mean breaking strength is greater than 179

Question 3
A sample of 40 speedometers of a particular brand is obtained, and each is calibrated to check for
accuracy at 54 mph. The resulting sample average and sample standard deviation are x = 53.8
and s = 1.3 respectively. Let μ = true average reading when actual speed is 55 mph. Does the
sample evidence suggests strongly that μ is 54 ? Use a level α = 0.01 test. Check your answer
using MINITAB.
H0 : μ = 54
H1 : μ ≠ 54

Sample mean X = 53.8, n = 40, s = 1.3

Z0 = -0.973
Z0.9 5 = 1.65 , Z0.05 = -1.65
Therefore Z0.05< Z0 < Z0.95 ,
Therefore H0 is True,
Therefore there are enough evidence to suggest that u is 54.

P > alpha , H0 is accepted

Question 4
Let μ1 and μ2 denote true average tread lives for two different brands of radial tyres.
Test , H0 : µ1 - µ2= 0 Vs H1: µ1 - µ2 ≠ 0, at level α = 0.05 using the following data:

x
n1= 40, 1 = 36500, s1 = 2200.
x2
n2= 40, = 33400, s2 = 1900.

H0 : µ1 - µ2= 0
H1: µ1 - µ2 ≠ 0
x
n1= 40, 1 = 36500, s1 = 2200.
x
n2= 40, 2 = 33400, s2 = 1900.

Z0 = 6.745
Z0.975 = 1.96

Hence Z0 > Z0.975 , H0 is rejected. Therefore we can conclude that true average thread lives
for two brands are different.

Question 5
A product reliability consultant conducted an experiment to test whether there is a difference in
leakages between three vendors’ (A,B and C) capacitors. Six samples were randomly drawn
from each vendor and the following leakage readings (in mill Amperes) were observed:
A B C
7.3 10.7 10.5

8 10.2 10.1
8.1 10.2 10.8

8.5 10.7 11.6

8.4 9.9 11.4

7.5 11 10.8

1. Test whether there are any differences in leakages between capacitors supplied by the
three vendors.
2. Compare all pairs of treatment means using the L.S.D. test. If you are looking to purchase
a capacitor, which of the vendor will you choose?
3. Check your answers to 1. and 2. using MINITAB.
All tests are to be made with α = 0.05.
