INTRODUCTION
This Service Bulletin informs you about the new cylinder liners with a fine thread in the upper part,
which is now the new standard on A- Type Diesel Engines, and the possibilities for adaptation of the
previous liners installed in existing engines.

1. NEW CYLINDER LINER WITH A FINE-THREAD IN THE UPPER PART

Field tests have confirmed that with a fine thread in the upper area of the cylinder liner, a constant
lubricating oil film on the cylinder liner running surface with correspondingly lower oil
consumption over a longer operating period can be reached.
Due to the fine thread in the upper part of the cylinder liner the liner, surface temperature in the
upper part will be slightly higher than the temperature of the piston crown. Because of the higher
stiction temperature of the threaded area, the deposit is formed in and on the threaded part of the
cylinder liner.
This deposit on the cylinder liner will now have a scraping effect and hinder or reduce the deposit
formation on the piston crown, thus keeping the piston crown free from an excessive carbon
build-up and reduce the oil transport by the piston crown deposit (please refer to the following
sketches).
This will ensure that the necessary oil film on the cylinder liner running surface remains
undisturbed and prevents the transportation of lubricating oil by the piston crown into the
combustion space where it would be burned, creating unnecessary hard carbon deposits.

Thus, the fine thread will not only influence the cylinder liner and piston ring wear in a positive
manner, it will also help to reduce the lubricating oil consumption.

To carry out the modification on the existing cylinder liners according to the measurements as given
on the above sketch, it is advisable to seek assistance from your local New Sulzer Diesel
Representative or from any approved NSD Service Agent.

3. REMOVAL OF THE PISTON

During overhaul of a cylinder it is of utmost importance that the combustion residues on the upper
part of the cylinder liner are removed, taking care not to damage the specially machined surface of
the liner, b e f o r e the piston is withdrawn.
It is essential that during the cleaning of the upper part of the liner suitable precautions are taken to
prevent foreign particles from entering the crankcase.
