Fitness and Dance Exploration

Grade Level: 10

Subject: Physical Education/Dance and Fitness

I. OBJECTIVES:

Content Standards: The learner demonstrates understanding of lifestyle and weight management to
promote societal fitness

Performance Standards: The learner maintains an active lifestyle to influence the physical activity
participation of the community and society practices healthy eating habits that support an active
lifestyle

Learning Competencies/Objectives:

 Assesses physical activities, exercises and eating habits This competency is already
embedded in other LCs.
 Engages in moderate to vigorous physical activities for at least 60 minutes a day in and out
of school
 Students will understand and analyze the cultural influences on street dance and hip-hop
styles.
 Students will improve physical coordination and self-expression through active participation
in dance activities.
 Students will appreciate the diversity within hip-hop culture by recognizing and categorizing
various dance styles.
 Students will demonstrate the ability to apply basic street dance and hip-hop movements
independently.
II. CONTENT:

1. Cultural Influences on Street Dance and Hip-hop Styles:

 Discuss the historical and cultural origins of street dance and hip-hop.

 Explore the significance of cultural influences on the evolution of different dance


styles.
2. Basics of Street Dance and Hip-hop:

 Break down key street dance styles (B-boying, Popping, Locking, Krumping, Tutting,
Shuffling, Waacking).

 Emphasize the unique characteristics and movements associated with each style.

III. LEARNING RESOURCES:

 Projector and screen

 Audio equipment for playing music

 Whiteboard and markers

 Pre-assessment and post-assessment surveys

 Handouts for 15-item post-assessment

 Video clip featuring a local dance group

 Clip from a dance movie (e.g., Step Up 4)

IV. PROCEDURES:

a. Introduction (10 minutes):

 Welcome students, fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment.

 Provide a brief overview of the lesson objectives, encouraging students to actively


participate in discussions.

b. Warm-Up (15 minutes):

 Introduce the "Be Happy or Be Sad" dynamic warm-up activity.

 Facilitate peer interactions by encouraging students to share their interpretations of happy


and sad movements.

 Promote a sense of unity through partner or small group warm-up exercises.

c. Modeling of Concept (I Do) (15 minutes):

 Show a video clip featuring a local dance group performing street dance.

 Pause periodically to allow students to share their observations and interpretations.

 Facilitate a class discussion on cultural influences, encouraging learners to express their


thoughts.

d. Guided Practice (We Do) (20 minutes):

 Engage students in the "4 Pics 1 Word" activity to reinforce dance style recognition.
 Encourage collaborative learning by having students work in small groups to discuss and
identify dance styles based on images.

 Facilitate a structured discussion on the cinematic portrayal of street dance, encouraging


students to share their opinions and reflections.

 Foster peer-to-peer learning by organizing small group discussions on key street dance and
hip-hop styles.

e. Independent Practice (You Do) (35 minutes):

 Facilitate a class discussion on students' current physical activities, promoting a supportive


atmosphere for sharing.

 Guide students through a detailed physical warm-up, incorporating partner stretches and
coordination exercises.

 Break students into smaller groups to learn and practice basic street dance moves
independently.

 Encourage learners to share their progress within the group, fostering peer feedback and
collaboration.

 Teach basic hip-hop dance steps and provide opportunities for individual and group practice.

 Distribute the 15-item post-assessment handout and assign watching a performance by the
Philippine All Star Group as homework, encouraging reflection and discussion in the next
class.

f. Generalize/Evaluate (5 minutes):

 Summarize key points from the lesson, eliciting input from students to reinforce their
understanding.

 Facilitate a whole-class discussion to evaluate the effectiveness of the activities in achieving


the objectives.

 Encourage learners to share their experiences and insights gained during the lesson.

g. Remediation/Enrichment (5 minutes):

 Provide additional guidance to students who may need extra support in mastering dance
movements.

 Facilitate a brief session for students to showcase their progress, allowing for peer-led
enrichment and collaboration.
