Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

 This dance unit is important because it is a fun and DIFFERENT way to incorporate physical activity into our daily lives. Dancing is no longer considered to
be just an “art form.” Rather, dance involves a lot of physical strength, endurance, agility, flexibility, and coordination! Dance combines body movement,
rhythm, locomotor and non-locomotor movements, spacial awareness, and personal expression.
 Dance is a fantastic and FUN way to get students physically fit and expose them to multiple different cultures and backgrounds.
 Dance also prepares students for social contexts they will be exposed to in everyday life and is a different way to get students to think about moving and
gain awareness about the world around them.
Unit Summary:

This dance unit is for Physical Education students at the secondary level, specifically 7th grade!
 This “Dance Around the World” unit is for students to gain an appreciation for the world and cultures around them. It will get
them prepared to be physically active in the form of dance. In this unit, students will gain knowledge and appreciation for
physical movement forms from around the world.
 This unit will allow students to think on a deeper level, effectively communicate with their peers, exercise creativity, and gain a
better appreciation and understanding for cultures and backgrounds other than their own!
 The goal of this multicultural dance unit is for students to become more comfortable with the idea of dance when they realize
that dance is a social activity that will help them with a general lifelong skill. Whether it be at weddings, corporate events,
socials, or something of that sort, students will be exposed to dance. It is important they learn the social properties of dance and
gain an appreciation for the activity early on in life instead of fearing it.
