5 Representing data

WHICH IS BEST? SOLUTIONS

TASK 1 Charity toys

1 About 790 rabbits were sold.

The pictogram or bar chart are the best for reading the number in each group.
The pictogram shows that about 800 rabbits were sold while the bar chart shows that the
true number was slightly less than 800. So taking the value from the bar chart, you could
estimate that about 790 were sold.

1
2 Approximately of the toys sold were bears.
3
The proportions (or fractions) are probably best read from the pie chart because you can
compare each section to the whole amount. The bears fill about a third of the pie chart.

3 You could not use a line graph for this data because each group is totally separate from the
others. A line joining the groups would have no meaning.

TASK 2 Heights of mountains

The best graph would be a bar chart.

You could also use a pictogram but you would have
to be careful to use pictures of the same width.
Each mountain is separate from the others and so
a line graph could not be used.
Here is one graph that you could draw.

TASK 3 Height of a plant

The best choice is a line graph because the days flow from one to the other and so do the
heights. The lines between the data points show the possible heights between measurements.
