GR. & SEC. 12-STEM b LAS # 4- Graphical Analysis

General Physics 1
Direction: Read and analyze the problem. Create a line graph by following the steps below. You can choose if you will
create the graph manually using pen, paper and ruler or using the Microsoft Excel. 15 points

Problem: The data in the table below were obtained in an experiment to determine the acceleration of a car. Graph
distance versus time. Transform the graph into linear form. Draw the best fit line, display the equation of the line, and
determine the acceleration of the car.

Distance 0 1 3 7.5 14 23.5 34.7 48.5 60 79

PROCEDURES
Step 1: Choose which will be the dependent and independent variables. The
dependent variable goes on the y-axis and the independent variable goes on
the x-axis.
Step 2: Make a scale for each axis by counting boxes to fit your largest value.
Count by multiples of 1, 2, 5, or 10.
Step 3: Plot each point by finding the x-value and drawing a line upward until
you get to the right y-value.
Step 4: Draw a smooth curve that shows the pattern of the points. Do not just
connect the dots.

1. Enter the data in two columns. The first column is the independent variable (time s2 ) and the second column is
dependent variable (distance).

2. Highlight the two columns. Click on Charts Layout and choose XY scatter.

3. You may add titles to your graph. Click on Charts Layout and then click on Axes Titles.

4. Click on Gridlines to add gridlines of your choice.

5. Click on the Trendline to draw the best fit curve. You may choose Linear in this example.

6. Click on Trendline then More Trendline Options. Check Display Equation on Chart.

The equation for best fit line in Excel is y = 0.9746x - 0.6567

D = ½ at^2

½ a= 0.9746 m/s^2

a=(2)(0.9746) m/s^2

a= 1.9294 m/s^2 or 2 m/s^2
