Week 11: How to speak so that people want to listen

1. What are the seven (7) deadly sins of speaking? How can these sins affect a speaker?

The seven deadly sins that have been mentioned by the speaker, Julian Treasure, are the following:

1. Gossip – speaking ill of somebody who’s not present

2. Judging – expressing bad opinion of someone
3. Negativity – being pessimist about something
4. Complaining – expressing dissatisfaction or annoyance
5. Excuses – embroidery and exaggeration
6. Lying – telling false statements
7. Dogmatism – the confusion of facts with opinions

These sins affect a speaker because his listener would probably not pay attention to what he is talking
to. The speaker cannot speak very well to people who aren’t listening in an environment that’s all about
noise and bad acoustics.

2. What are the four (4) foundations of a powerful speech?

Julian Treasure suggests that there are powerful foundations on which we may build our speech if we
want to make a difference in the world. He called this H.A.I.L. which means to greet or acclaim
enthusiastically. H.A.I.L. stands for the following:

Honesty – be clear and straight

Authenticity – be yourself, standing in your own truth
Integrity – be your word, actually doing what you say
Love – wishing people well

3. How could H.A.I.L. make your speech more listenable?

According to Julian Treasure, individuals should become more aware of not only what they say,
but also how they utilize their physical voice. Using a lower register can help a voice seem more
aggressive and authoritative, while removing song-like prosody or intonation can help a voice sound
more consistent.
