7) This question is about gases.
a) A closed plastic bottle half filled with water and placed in the sun expands. Explain
why this happens in terms of energy and particles.

11) Two students found a bottle of acid called sulfamic acid. Its chemical formula was
written as NH3SO3. Sulfamic acid neutralises NaOH according to the following
equation:
NH3SO3 + NaOH → H2O + NaH2NSO3
NaH2NSO3 is the only salt that forms.
They decided to carry out a titration against a 1.5 mol dm-3 solution of NaOH to find
the concentration of the acid.
a) Describe how the titration can be carried out. In your description, include the
cleaning procedures necessary to ensure an accurate result. (6)
b) Draw a labelled diagram of the apparatus which can be used for this titration. (2)
c) Sulfamic acid is a strong acid. Name an indicator which can be used for this titration
and explain its purpose. (2)
d) The values from the three titration experiments which were carried out were
22.50 cm3, 21.60 cm3, and 21.70 cm3. Calculate the average titre value of the NaOH
solution. (2)
e) Calculate the number of moles of NaOH which react with the acid. (2)
f) Use the given equation to find the number of moles of acid which react with
NaOH. (1)

12) This question is about the reactivity series.


a) Tin is an element in group IV of the Periodic Table. The position of tin in the
reactivity series is between iron and copper.
i) For each of the following decide if a reaction would occur. If there is a reaction,

vi) Sometimes aluminium reacts slower than expected. Explain why. (1)
c) Iron is extracted from its ore, haematite, in the blast furnace.
i) Name the fuel which is used to produce the high temperatures required in the blast
furnace. (1)
ii) The carbon monoxide formed inside the blast furnace reduces the haematite to iron.

iii) Nowadays special filters must be installed to prevent harmful gases from polluting

concentrated sulfuric acid.
