BE YOUR FUTURE SELF NOW

Prepared by Dr. Benjamin Hardy
Future Self Commit Tool
• Take no more than 10 minutes writing a letter TO your Future Self,
from your current self.
• Keep this no more than 2 written pages.
• Remember that your “future” is a draft, and is under constant
revision… just as your past is. Don’t stress or overcomplicate this. Be
playful.
• Choose a timeline, or, if inspired, write multiple letters to your Future
Selves at different timelines.
• Example: 12 months, 3 years, 5 years, 10 years, 20 years, 50 years…
• In this letter, tell you Future Self who you are, what you’re committed
to, and where you promise them you’ll be.
Future Self Connect Tool
• Take no more than 10 minutes writing a letter FROM your Future Self,
to your current self.
• Example: 12 months, 3 years, 5 years, 10 years, 20 years, 50 years…
• In this letter, as your Future Self – tell your past self who you are,
what your life is like, what you’re focused on, and if desired, share any
advice to your past self.
Future Self Imagination Tool
• Research shows that people dramatically underestimate how DIFFERENT
their Future Self will be from their current self.
• Dr. Daniel Gilbert explains that this is because people don’t take the time to
imagine their Future Selves – and Albert Einstein said, “Imagination is more
important than knowledge.”
• Pull out a piece of paper and write 2 pages… the first page write all the
ways you’re different from who you were 10 years ago.
• On the second page, write about where your Future Self could be, and
where you’d LOVE them to be in 10 years from now. Based on the changes
you see from your current to your past self, make the changes at least 10x
bigger between your current and Future Self.
• Don’t overly complicate this. Be playful. This is between you and yourself.
All progress starts by telling the truth. Napoleon Hill stated, “Whatever the
mind can conceive and believe, the mind can achieve.”
3 Priorities Checklist
• Think about your Future Self 10 years from now. “It’s far better to
optimize for where you’ll be in 10 years from now than where you’ll
be 10 days from now.”
• Jim Collins said, “If you have more than 3 priorities, you have none.”
• Who is your Future Self in 10 years from now?
• What are the 3 most important priorities to them? (remember, they
are far DIFFERENT from your current priorities/focus)
• It’s better to let the future drive the present than the present to drive
the future- therefore, based on your Future Selve’s priorities and
focus, what can you immediately eliminate from your life that isn’t
that?
• How can you start BEING your Future Self… now?
• What would THEY do and focus on if they were put in your shoes?
