CHAPTER ELEVEN

The Universal Form


TEXT 1
अर्जुन उवाच
मदनजग्रहाय परमं गजह्यमध्यात्मसंज्ञितम् ।
यत्त्वयोक्तं वचस्तेन मोहोऽयं ज्ञवगतो मम ॥ १ ॥
arjuna uvāca
mad-anugrahāya paramaṁ
guhyam adhyātma-saṁjñitam
yat tvayoktaṁ vacas tena
moho ’yaṁ vigato mama
Translation
Arjuna said: By my hearing the instructions You have kindly given me
about these most confidential spiritual subjects, my illusion has now been
dispelled.
TEXT 2
भवाप्ययौ ज्ञह भूतानां श्रजतौ ज्ञवस्तरशो मया ।
त्वत्त: कमलपत्राक्ष माहात्म्यमज्ञप चाव्ययम् ॥ २ ॥
bhavāpyayau hi bhūtānāṁ
śrutau vistaraśo mayā
tvattaḥ kamala-patrākṣa
māhātmyam api cāvyayam
Translation
O lotus-eyed one, I have heard from You in detail about the appearance
and disappearance of every living entity and have realized Your
inexhaustible glories.
TEXT 3
एवमेतद्यथात्थ त्वमात्मानं परमेश्वर ।
द्रष्टज ज्ञमच्छाज्ञम ते रूपमैश्वरं पजरुषोत्तम ॥ ३ ॥
evam etad yathāttha tvam
ātmānaṁ parameśvara
draṣṭum icchāmi te rūpam
aiśvaraṁ puruṣottama
Translation
O greatest of all personalities, O supreme form, though I see You here
before me in Your actual position, as You have described Yourself, I wish
to see how You have entered into this cosmic manifestation. I want to see
that form of Yours.
TEXT 4
मन्यसे यज्ञद तच्छक्यं मया द्रष्टज ज्ञमज्ञत प्रभो ।
योगेश्वर ततो मे त्वं दशुयात्मानमव्ययम् ॥ ४ ॥
manyase yadi tac chakyaṁ
mayā draṣṭum iti prabho
yogeśvara tato me tvaṁ
darśayātmānam avyayam
Translation
If You think that I am able to behold Your cosmic form, O my Lord, O
master of all mystic power, then kindly show me that unlimited universal
Self.
TEXT 5
श्रीभगवानजवाच
पश्य मे पाथु रूपाज्ञि शतशोऽथ सहस्रश: ।
नानाज्ञवधाज्ञन ज्ञदव्याज्ञन नानाविाु कृतीज्ञन च ॥ ५ ॥
śrī-bhagavān uvāca
paśya me pārtha rūpāṇi
śataśo ’tha sahasraśaḥ
nānā-vidhāni divyāni
nānā-varṇākṛtīni ca
Translation
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: My dear Arjuna, O son of
Pṛthā, see now My opulences, hundreds of thousands of varied divine and
multicolored forms.
TEXT 6
पश्याज्ञदत्यान्वसून्रुद्रानज्ञश्वनौ मरुतस्तथा ।
बहून्यदृष्टपूवाु ज्ञि पश्याश्चयाु ज्ञि भारत ॥ ६ ॥
paśyādityān vasūn rudrān
aśvinau marutas tathā
bahūny adṛṣṭa-pūrvāṇi
paśyāścaryāṇi bhārata
Translation
O best of the Bhāratas, see here the different manifestations of Ādityas,
Vasus, Rudras, Aśvinī-kumāras and all the other demigods. Behold the
many wonderful things which no one has ever seen or heard of before.
TEXT 7
इहै कस्थं र्गत्कृत्स्नं पश्याद्य सचराचरम् ।
मम दे हे गजडाकेश यच्चाान्यद् द्रष्टज ज्ञमच्छज्ञस ॥ ७ ॥
ihaika-sthaṁ jagat kṛtsnaṁ
paśyādya sa-carācaram
mama dehe guḍākeśa
yac cānyad draṣṭum icchasi
Translation
O Arjuna, whatever you wish to see, behold at once in this body of Mine!
This universal form can show you whatever you now desire to see and
whatever you may want to see in the future. Everything – moving and
nonmoving – is here completely, in one place.
TEXT 8
न तज मां शक्यसे द्रष्टज मनेनैव स्वचक्षजषा ।
ज्ञदव्यं ददाज्ञम ते चक्षज: पश्य मे योगमैश्वरम् ॥ ८ ॥
na tu māṁ śakyase draṣṭum
anenaiva sva-cakṣuṣā
divyaṁ dadāmi te cakṣuḥ
paśya me yogam aiśvaram
Translation
But you cannot see Me with your present eyes. Therefore I give you divine
eyes. Behold My mystic opulence!
TEXT 9
सञ्जय उवाच
एवमजक्त्वा ततो रार्न्महायोगेश्वरो हरर: ।
दशुयामास पाथाु य परमं रूपमैश्वरम् ॥ ९ ॥
sañjaya uvāca
evam uktvā tato rājan
mahā-yogeśvaro hariḥ
darśayām āsa pārthāya
paramaṁ rūpam aiśvaram
Translation
Sañjaya said: O King, having spoken thus, the Supreme Lord of all mystic
power, the Personality of Godhead, displayed His universal form to
Arjuna.
TEXTS 10-11
अनेकवक्त्रनयनमनेकाद्भाज तदशुनम् ।
अनेकज्ञदव्याभरिं ज्ञदव्यानेकोद्यतायजधम् ॥ १० ॥
ज्ञदव्यमाल्याम्बरधरं ज्ञदव्यगन्धानजलेपनम् ।
सवाु श्चयुमयं दे वमनन्तं ज्ञवश्वतोमजखम् ॥ ११ ॥
aneka-vaktra-nayanam
anekādbhuta-darśanam
aneka-divyābharaṇaṁ
divyānekodyatāyudham
divya-mālyāmbara-dharaṁ
divya-gandhānulepanam
sarvāścarya-mayaṁ devam
anantaṁ viśvato-mukham
Translation
Arjuna saw in that universal form unlimited mouths, unlimited eyes,
unlimited wonderful visions. The form was decorated with many celestial
ornaments and bore many divine upraised weapons. He wore celestial
garlands and garments, and many divine scents were smeared over His
body. All was wondrous, brilliant, unlimited, all-expanding.
TEXT 12
ज्ञदज्ञव सूयुसहस्रस्य भवेद्यजगपदज त्थत्थता ।
यज्ञद भा: सदृशी सा स्याद्भाासस्तस्य महात्मन: ॥ १२ ॥
divi sūrya-sahasrasya
bhaved yugapad utthitā
yadi bhāḥ sadṛśī sā syād
bhāsas tasya mahātmanaḥ
Translation
If hundreds of thousands of suns were to rise at once into the sky, their
radiance might resemble the effulgence of the Supreme Person in that
universal form.
TEXT 13
तत्रैकस्थं र्गत्कृत्स्नं प्रज्ञवभक्तमनेकधा ।
अपश्यद्दे वदे वस्य शरीरे पाण्डवस्तदा ॥ १३ ॥
tatraika-sthaṁ jagat kṛtsnaṁ
pravibhaktam anekadhā
apaśyad deva-devasya
śarīre pāṇḍavas tadā
Translation
At that time Arjuna could see in the universal form of the Lord the
unlimited expansions of the universe situated in one place although
divided into many, many thousands.
TEXT 14
तत: स ज्ञवस्मयाज्ञवष्टो हृष्टरोमा धनञ्जय: ।
प्रिम्य ज्ञशरसा दे वं कृताञ्जज्ञलरभाषत ॥ १४ ॥
tataḥ sa vismayāviṣṭo
hṛṣṭa-romā dhanañ-jayaḥ
praṇamya śirasā devaṁ
kṛtāñjalir abhāṣata
Translation
Then, bewildered and astonished, his hair standing on end, Arjuna bowed
his head to offer obeisances and with folded hands began to pray to the
Supreme Lord.
TEXT 15
अर्जुन उवाच
पश्याज्ञम दे वां स्तव दे व दे हे
सवाां स्तथा भूतज्ञवशेषसङ्घान् ।
ब्रह्मािमीशं कमलासनस्थ-
मृषींश्च सवाु नजरगां श्च ज्ञदव्यान् ॥ १५ ॥
arjuna uvāca
paśyāmi devāṁs tava deva dehe
sarvāṁs tathā bhūta-viśeṣa-saṅghān
brahmāṇam īśaṁ kamalāsana-stham
ṛṣīṁś ca sarvān uragāṁś ca divyān
Translation
Arjuna said: My dear Lord Kṛṣṇa, I see assembled in Your body all the
demigods and various other living entities. I see Brahmā sitting on the
lotus flower, as well as Lord Śiva and all the sages and divine serpents.
TEXT 16
अनेकबाहूदरवक्त्रनेत्रं
पश्याज्ञम त्वां सवुतोऽनन्तरूपम् ।
नान्तं न मध्यं न पजनस्तवाज्ञदं
पश्याज्ञम ज्ञवश्वेश्वर ज्ञवश्वरूप ॥ १६ ॥
aneka-bāhūdara-vaktra-netraṁ
paśyāmi tvāṁ sarvato ’nanta-rūpam
nāntaṁ na madhyaṁ na punas tavādiṁ
paśyāmi viśveśvara viśva-rūpa
Translation
O Lord of the universe, O universal form, I see in Your body many, many
arms, bellies, mouths and eyes, expanded everywhere, without limit. I see
in You no end, no middle and no beginning.
TEXT 17
ज्ञकरीज्ञटनं गज्ञदनं चज्ञििं च
तेर्ोराज्ञशं सवुतो दीप्ज्ञतमन्तम् ।
पश्याज्ञम त्वां दज ज्ञनुरीक्ष्यं समन्ता-
द्दीप्तानलाकुद् यजज्ञतमप्रमेयम् ॥ १७ ॥
kirīṭinaṁ gadinaṁ cakriṇaṁ ca
tejo-rāśiṁ sarvato dīptimantam
paśyāmi tvāṁ durnirīkṣyaṁ samantād
dīptānalārka-dyutim aprameyam
Translation
Your form is difficult to see because of its glaring effulgence, spreading on
all sides, like blazing fire or the immeasurable radiance of the sun. Yet I
see this glowing form everywhere, adorned with various crowns, clubs and
discs.
TEXT 18
त्वमक्षरं परमं वेज्ञदतव्यं
त्वमस्य ज्ञवश्वस्य परं ज्ञनधानम् ।
त्वमव्यय: शाश्वतधमुगोप्ता
सनातनस्त्वं पजरुषो मतो मे ॥ १८ ॥
tvam akṣaraṁ paramaṁ veditavyaṁ
tvam asya viśvasya paraṁ nidhānam
tvam avyayaḥ śāśvata-dharma-goptā
sanātanas tvaṁ puruṣo mato me
Translation
You are the supreme primal objective. You are the ultimate resting place
of all this universe. You are inexhaustible, and You are the oldest. You are
the maintainer of the eternal religion, the Personality of Godhead. This is
my opinion.
TEXT 19
अनाज्ञदमध्यान्तमनन्तवीयु-
मनन्तबाहं शज्ञशसूयुनेत्रम् ।
पश्याज्ञम त्वां दीप्तहताशवक्त्रं
स्वतेर्सा ज्ञवश्वज्ञमदं तपन्तम् ॥ १९ ॥
anādi-madhyāntam ananta-vīryam
ananta-bāhuṁ śaśi-sūrya-netram
paśyāmi tvāṁ dīpta-hutāśa-vaktraṁ
sva-tejasā viśvam idaṁ tapantam
Translation
You are without origin, middle or end. Your glory is unlimited. You have
numberless arms, and the sun and moon are Your eyes. I see You with
blazing fire coming forth from Your mouth, burning this entire universe
by Your own radiance.
TEXT 20
द्यावापृज्ञथव्योररदमन्तरं ज्ञह
व्याप्तं त्वयैकेन ज्ञदशश्च सवाु : ।
दृष्वाद् भजतं रूपमजग्रं तवेदं
लोकत्रयं प्रव्यज्ञथतं महात्मन् ॥ २० ॥
dyāv ā-pṛthivyor idam antaraṁ hi
vyāptaṁ tvayaikena diśaś ca sarvāḥ
dṛṣṭvādbhutaṁ rūpam ugraṁ tavedaṁ
loka-trayaṁ pravyathitaṁ mahātman
Translation
Although You are one, You spread throughout the sky and the planets
and all space between. O great one, seeing this wondrous and terrible
form, all the planetary systems are perturbed.
TEXT 21
अमी ज्ञह त्वां सजरसङ्घा ज्ञवशत्थन्त
केज्ञचद्भाीता: प्राञ्जलयो गृित्थन्त ।
स्वस्तीत्यजक्त्वा महज्ञषुज्ञसद्धसङ्घा:
स्तजवत्थन्त त्वां स्तजज्ञतज्ञभ: पजष्कलाज्ञभ: ॥ २१ ॥
amī hi tvāṁ sura-saṅghā viśanti
kecid bhītāḥ prāñjalayo gṛṇanti
svastīty uktvā maharṣi-siddha-saṅghāḥ
stuvanti tvāṁ stutibhiḥ puṣkalābhiḥ
Translation
All the hosts of demigods are surrendering before You and entering into
You. Some of them, very much afraid, are offering prayers with folded
hands. Hosts of great sages and perfected beings, crying “All peace!” are
praying to You by singing the Vedic hymns.
TEXT 22
रुद्राज्ञदत्या वसवो ये च साध्या
ज्ञवश्वेऽज्ञश्वनौ मरुतश्चोष्मपाश्च ।
गन्धवुयक्षासजरज्ञसद्धसङ्घा
वीक्षन्ते त्वां ज्ञवत्थस्मताश्चैव सवे ॥ २२ ॥
rudrādityā vasavo ye ca sādhyā
viśve ’śvinau marutaś coṣmapāś ca
gandharva-yakṣāsura-siddha-saṅghā
vīkṣante tvāṁ vismitāś caiva sarve
Translation
All the various manifestations of Lord Śiva, the Ādityas, the Vasus, the
Sādhyas, the Viśvedevas, the two Aśvīs, the Maruts, the forefathers, the
Gandharvas, the Yakṣas, the Asuras and the perfected demigods are
beholding You in wonder.
TEXT 23
रूपं महत्ते बहवक्त्रनेत्रं
महाबाहो बहबाहूरुपादम् ।
बहूदरं बहदं ष्टराकरालं
दृष्वा लोका: प्रव्यज्ञथतास्तथाहम् ॥ २३ ॥
rūpaṁ mahat te bahu-vaktra-netraṁ
mahā-bāho bahu-bāhūru-pādam
bahūdaraṁ bahu-daṁṣṭrā-karālaṁ
dṛṣṭvā lokāḥ pravyathitās tathāham
Translation
O mighty-armed one, all the planets with their demigods are disturbed at
seeing Your great form, with its many faces, eyes, arms, thighs, legs and
bellies and Your many terrible teeth; and as they are disturbed, so am I.
TEXT 24
नभ:स्पृशं दीप्तमनेकविां
व्यात्ताननं दीप्तज्ञवशालनेत्रम् ।
दृष्वा ज्ञह त्वां प्रव्यज्ञथतान्तरात्मा
धृ ज्ञतं न ज्ञवन्दाज्ञम शमं च ज्ञवष्णो ॥ २४ ॥
nabhaḥ-spṛśaṁ dīptam aneka-varṇaṁ
vyāttānanaṁ dīpta-viśāla-netram
dṛṣṭvā hi tvāṁ pravyathitāntar-ātmā
dhṛtiṁ na vindāmi śamaṁ ca viṣṇo
Translation
O all-pervading Viṣṇu, seeing You with Your many radiant colors
touching the sky, Your gaping mouths, and Your great glowing eyes, my
mind is perturbed by fear. I can no longer maintain my steadiness or
equilibrium of mind.
TEXT 25
दं ष्टराकरालाज्ञन च ते मजखाज्ञन
दृष्वै व कालानलसज्ञिभाज्ञन ।
ज्ञदशो न र्ाने न लभे च शमु
प्रसीद दे वेश र्गज्ञिवास ॥ २५ ॥
daṁṣṭrā-karālāni ca te mukhāni
dṛṣṭvaiva kālānala-sannibhāni
diśo na jāne na labhe ca śarma
prasīda deveśa jagan-nivāsa
Translation
O Lord of lords, O refuge of the worlds, please be gracious to me. I cannot
keep my balance seeing thus Your blazing deathlike faces and awful teeth.
In all directions I am bewildered.
TEXTS 26-27
अमी च त्वां धृ तराष्टरस्य पजत्रा:
सवे सहै वावज्ञनपालसङ्घै: ।
भीष्मो द्रोि: सूतपजत्रस्तथासौ
सहास्मदीयैरज्ञप योधमजख्यै: ॥ २६ ॥
वक्त्राज्ञि ते त्वरमािा ज्ञवशत्थन्त
दं ष्टराकरालाज्ञन भयानकाज्ञन ।
केज्ञचज्ञिलग्नाा दशनान्तरे षज
सन्ददृश्यन्ते चूज्ञिुतैरुत्तमाङ्गै: ॥ २७ ॥
amī ca tvāṁ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putrāḥ
sarve sahaivāvani-pāla-saṅghaiḥ
bhīṣmo droṇaḥ sūta-putras tathāsau
sahāsmadīyair api yodha-mukhyaiḥ
vaktrāṇi te tvaramāṇā viśanti
daṁṣṭrā-karālāni bhayānakāni
kecid vilagnā daśanāntareṣu
sandṛśyante cūrṇitair uttamāṅgaiḥ
Translation
All the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, along with their allied kings, and Bhīṣma,
Droṇa, Karṇa – and our chief soldiers also – are rushing into Your fearful
mouths. And some I see trapped with heads smashed between Your teeth.
TEXT 28
यथा नदीनां बहवोऽम्बजवेगा:
समजद्रमेवाज्ञभमजखा द्रवत्थन्त ।
तथा तवामी नरलोकवीरा
ज्ञवशत्थन्त वक्त्राण्यज्ञभज्ञवर््वलत्थन्त ॥ २८ ॥
yathā nadīnāṁ bahavo ’mbu-vegāḥ
samudram evābhimukhā dravanti
tathā tavāmī nara-loka-vīrā
viśanti vaktrāṇy abhivijvalanti
Translation
As the many waves of the rivers flow into the ocean, so do all these great
warriors enter blazing into Your mouths.
TEXT 29
यथा प्रदीप्तं र््वलनं पतङ्गा
ज्ञवशत्थन्त नाशाय समृद्धवेगा: ।
तथैव नाशाय ज्ञवशत्थन्त लोका-
स्तवाज्ञप वक्त्राज्ञि समृद्धवेगा: ॥ २९ ॥
yathā pradīptaṁ jvalanaṁ pataṅgā
viśanti nāśāya samṛddha-vegāḥ
tathaiva nāśāya viśanti lokās
tavāpi vaktrāṇi samṛddha-vegāḥ
Translation
I see all people rushing full speed into Your mouths, as moths dash to
destruction in a blazing fire.
TEXT 30
लेज्ञलह्यसे ग्रसमान: समन्ता-
ल्लाोकान्समग्रान्वदनैर््वुलद्भज्ञाा ।
तेर्ोज्ञभरापूयु र्गत्समग्रं
भासस्तवोग्रा: प्रतपत्थन्त ज्ञवष्णो ॥ ३० ॥
lelihyase grasamānaḥ samantāl
lokān samagrān vadanair jvaladbhiḥ
tejobhir āpūrya jagat samagraṁ
bhāsas tavogrāḥ pratapanti viṣṇo
Translation
O Viṣṇu, I see You devouring all people from all sides with Your flaming
mouths. Covering all the universe with Your effulgence, You are manifest
with terrible, scorching rays.
TEXT 31
आख्याज्ञह मे को भवानजग्ररूपो
नमोऽस्तज ते दे ववर प्रसीद ।
ज्ञविातजज्ञमच्छाज्ञम भवन्तमाद्यं
न ज्ञह प्रर्ानाज्ञम तव प्रवृज्ञत्तम् ॥ ३१ ॥
ākhyāhi me ko bhavān ugra-rūpo
namo ’stu te deva-vara prasīda
vijñātum icchāmi bhavantam ādyaṁ
na hi prajānāmi tava pravṛttim
Translation
O Lord of lords, so fierce of form, please tell me who You are. I offer my
obeisances unto You; please be gracious to me. You are the primal Lord.
I want to know about You, for I do not know what Your mission is.
TEXT 32
श्रीभगवानजवाच
कालोऽत्थस्म लोकक्षयकृत्प्रवृद्धो
लोकान्समाहतजुज्ञमह प्रवृत्त: ।
ऋतेऽज्ञप त्वां न भज्ञवष्यत्थन्त सवे
येऽवत्थस्थता: प्रत्यनीकेषज योधा: ॥ ३२ ॥
śrī-bhagavān uvāca
kālo ’smi loka-kṣaya-kṛt pravṛddho
lokān samāhartum iha pravṛttaḥ
ṛte ’pi tvāṁ na bhaviṣyanti sarve
ye ’vasthitāḥ praty-anīkeṣu yodhāḥ
Translation
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Time I am, the great destroyer
of the worlds, and I have come here to destroy all people. With the
exception of you [the Pāṇḍavas], all the soldiers here on both sides will be
slain.
TEXT 33
तस्मात्त्वमजज्ञत्तष्ठ यशो लभस्व
ज्ञर्त्वा शत्रून्दभजंक्ष्व राज्यं समृद्धम् ।
मयैवैते ज्ञनहता: पूवुमेव
ज्ञनज्ञमत्तमात्रं भव सव्यसाज्ञचन् ॥ ३३ ॥
tasmāt tvam uttiṣṭha yaśo labhasva
jitvā śatrūn bhuṅkṣva rājyaṁ samṛddham
mayaivaite nihatāḥ pūrvam eva
nimitta-mātraṁ bhava savya-sācin
Translation
Therefore get up. Prepare to fight and win glory. Conquer your enemies
and enjoy a flourishing kingdom. They are already put to death by My
arrangement, and you, O Savyasācī, can be but an instrument in the fight.
TEXT 34
द्रोिं च भीष्मं च र्यद्रथं च
किां तथान्यानज्ञप योधवीरान् ।
मया हतां स्त्वं र्ज्ञह मा व्यज्ञथष्ठा
यजध्यस्व र्ेताज्ञस रिे सपत्नान् ॥ ३४ ॥
droṇaṁ ca bhīṣmaṁ ca jayadrathaṁ ca
karṇaṁ tathānyān api yodha-vīrān
mayā hatāṁs tvaṁ jahi mā vyathiṣṭhā
yudhyasva jetāsi raṇe sapatnān
Translation
Droṇa, Bhīṣma, Jayadratha, Karṇa and the other great warriors have
already been destroyed by Me. Therefore, kill them and do not be
disturbed. Simply fight, and you will vanquish your enemies in battle.
TEXT 35
सञ्जय उवाच
एतच्छुत्वा वचनं केशवस्य
कृताञ्जज्ञलवेपमान: ज्ञकरीटी ।
नमस्कृत्वा भूय एवाह कृष्णं
सगद्गदं भीतभीत: प्रिम्य ॥ ३५ ॥
sañjaya uvāca
etac chrutvā vacanaṁ keśavasya
kṛtāñjalir vepamānaḥ kirīṭī
namaskṛtvā bhūya evāha kṛṣṇaṁ
sa-gadgadaṁ bhīta-bhītaḥ praṇamya
Translation
Sañjaya said to Dhṛtarāṣṭra: O King, after hearing these words from the
Supreme Personality of Godhead, the trembling Arjuna offered
obeisances with folded hands again and again. He fearfully spoke to Lord
Kṛṣṇa in a faltering voice, as follows.
TEXT 36
अर्जुन उवाच
स्थाने हृषीकेश तव प्रकीत्याु
र्गत्प्रहृष्यत्यनजरज्यते च ।
रक्षां ज्ञस भीताज्ञन ज्ञदशो द्रवत्थन्त
सवे नमस्यत्थन्त च ज्ञसद्धसङ्घा: ॥ ३६ ॥
arjuna uvāca
sthāne hṛṣīkeśa tava prakīrtyā
jagat prahṛṣyaty anurajyate ca
rakṣāṁsi bhītāni diśo dravanti
sarve namasyanti ca siddha-saṅghāḥ
Translation
Arjuna said: O master of the senses, the world becomes joyful upon
hearing Your name, and thus everyone becomes attached to You.
Although the perfected beings offer You their respectful homage, the
demons are afraid, and they flee here and there. All this is rightly done.
TEXT 37
कस्माच्च ते न नमेरन्महात्मन्
गरीयसे ब्रह्मिोऽप्याज्ञदकत्रे ।
अनन्त दे वेश र्गज्ञिवास
त्वमक्षरं सदसत्तत्परं यत् ॥ ३७ ॥
kasmāc ca te na nameran mahātman
garīyase brahmaṇo ’py ādi-kartre
ananta deveśa jagan-nivāsa
tvam akṣaraṁ sad-asat tat paraṁ yat
Translation
O great one, greater even than Brahmā, You are the original creator. Why
then should they not offer their respectful obeisances unto You? O
limitless one, God of gods, refuge of the universe! You are the invincible
source, the cause of all causes, transcendental to this material
manifestation.
TEXT 38
त्वमाज्ञददे व: पजरुष: पजराि-
स्त्वमस्य ज्ञवश्वस्य परं ज्ञनधानम् ।
वेत्ताज्ञस वेद्यं च परं च धाम
त्वया ततं ज्ञवश्वमनन्तरूप ॥ ३८ ॥
tvam ādi-devaḥ puruṣaḥ purāṇas
tvam asya viśvasya paraṁ nidhānam
vettāsi vedyaṁ ca paraṁ ca dhāma
tvayā tataṁ viśvam ananta-rūpa
Translation
You are the original Personality of Godhead, the oldest, the ultimate
sanctuary of this manifested cosmic world. You are the knower of
everything, and You are all that is knowable. You are the supreme refuge,
above the material modes. O limitless form! This whole cosmic
manifestation is pervaded by You!
TEXT 39
वायजयुमोऽग्नज्ञावुरुि: शशाङ्क:
प्रर्ापज्ञतस्त्वं प्रज्ञपतामहश्च ।
नमो नमस्तेऽस्तज सहस्रकृत्व:
पजनश्च भूयोऽज्ञप नमो नमस्ते ॥ ३९ ॥
vāyur yamo ’gnir varuṇaḥ śaśāṅkaḥ
prajāpatis tvaṁ prapitāmahaś ca
namo namas te ’stu sahasra-kṛtvaḥ
punaś ca bhūyo ’pi namo namas te
Translation
You are air, and You are the supreme controller! You are fire, You are
water, and You are the moon! You are Brahmā, the first living creature,
and You are the great-grandfather. I therefore offer my respectful
obeisances unto You a thousand times, and again and yet again!
TEXT 40
नम: पजरस्तादथ पृष्ठतस्ते
नमोऽस्तज ते सवुत एव सवु ।
अनन्तवीयाु ज्ञमतज्ञविमस्त्वं
सवां समाप्नोज्ञष ततोऽज्ञस सवु: ॥ ४० ॥
namaḥ purastād atha pṛṣṭhatas te
namo ’stu te sarvata eva sarva
ananta-vīryāmita-vikramas tvaṁ
sarvaṁ samāpnoṣi tato ’si sarvaḥ
Translation
Obeisances to You from the front, from behind and from all sides! O
unbounded power, You are the master of limitless might! You are all-
pervading, and thus You are everything!
TEXTS 41-42
सखेज्ञत मत्वा प्रसभं यदज क्तं
हे कृष्ण हे यादव हे सखेज्ञत ।
अर्ानता मज्ञहमानं तवेदं
मया प्रमादात्प्रियेन वाज्ञप ॥ ४१ ॥
यच्चाावहासाथुमसत्कृतोऽज्ञस
ज्ञवहारशय्यासनभोर्नेषज ।
एकोऽथवाप्यच्यजत तत्समक्षं
तत्क्षामये त्वामहमप्रमेयम् ॥ ४२ ॥
sakheti matvā prasabhaṁ yad uktaṁ
he kṛṣṇa he yādava he sakheti
ajānatā mahimānaṁ tavedaṁ
mayā pramādāt praṇayena vāpi
yac cāvahāsārtham asat-kṛto ’si
vihāra-śayyāsana-bhojaneṣu
eko ’tha vāpy acyuta tat-samakṣaṁ
tat kṣāmaye tvām aham aprameyam
Translation
Thinking of You as my friend, I have rashly addressed You “O Kṛṣṇa,”
“O Yādava,” “O my friend,” not knowing Your glories. Please forgive
whatever I may have done in madness or in love. I have dishonored You
many times, jesting as we relaxed, lay on the same bed, or sat or ate
together, sometimes alone and sometimes in front of many friends. O
infallible one, please excuse me for all those offenses.
TEXT 43
ज्ञपताज्ञस लोकस्य चराचरस्य
त्वमस्य पूज्यश्च गजरुगुरीयान् ।
न त्वत्समोऽस्त्यभ्यज्ञधक: कजतोऽन्यो
लोकत्रयेऽप्यप्रज्ञतमप्रभाव ॥ ४३ ॥
pitāsi lokasya carācarasya
tvam asya pūjyaś ca gurur garīyān
na tvat-samo ’sty abhyadhikaḥ kuto ’nyo
loka-traye ’py apratima-prabhāva
Translation
You are the father of this complete cosmic manifestation, of the moving
and the nonmoving. You are its worshipable chief, the supreme spiritual
master. No one is greater than You, nor can anyone be one with You. How
then could there be anyone greater than You within the three worlds, O
Lord of immeasurable power?
TEXT 44
तस्मात्प्रिम्य प्रज्ञिधाय कायं
प्रसादये त्वामहमीशमीड्यम् ।
ज्ञपतेव पजत्रस्य सखेव सख्यज:
ज्ञप्रय: ज्ञप्रयायाहु ज्ञस दे व सोढज म् ॥ ४४ ॥
tasmāt praṇamya praṇidhāya kāyaṁ
prasādaye tvām aham īśam īḍyam
piteva putrasya sakheva sakhyuḥ
priyaḥ priyāyārhasi deva soḍhum
Translation
You are the Supreme Lord, to be worshiped by every living being. Thus I
fall down to offer You my respectful obeisances and ask Your mercy. As
a father tolerates the impudence of his son, a friend the impertinence of a
friend, or a husband the familiarity of his wife, please tolerate the wrongs
I may have done You.
TEXT 45
अदृष्टपूवां हृज्ञषतोऽत्थस्म दृष्वा
भयेन च प्रव्यज्ञथतं मनो मे ।
तदे व मे दशुय दे व रूपं
प्रसीद दे वेश र्गज्ञिवास ॥ ४५ ॥
adṛṣṭa-pūrvaṁ hṛṣito ’smi dṛṣṭvā
bhayena ca pravyathitaṁ mano me
tad eva me darśaya deva rūpaṁ
prasīda deveśa jagan-nivāsa
Translation
After seeing this universal form, which I have never seen before, I am
gladdened, but at the same time my mind is disturbed with fear. Therefore
please bestow Your grace upon me and reveal again Your form as the
Personality of Godhead, O Lord of lords, O abode of the universe.
TEXT 46
ज्ञकरीज्ञटनं गज्ञदनं चिहस्त-
ज्ञमच्छाज्ञम त्वां द्रष्टज महं तथैव ।
तेनैव रूपेि चतजभजुर्ेन
सहस्रबाहो भव ज्ञवश्वमूते ॥ ४६ ॥
kirīṭinaṁ gadinaṁ cakra-hastam
icchāmi tvāṁ draṣṭum ahaṁ tathaiva
tenaiva rūpeṇa catur-bhujena
sahasra-bāho bhava viśva-mūrte
Translation
O universal form, O thousand-armed Lord, I wish to see You in Your
four-armed form, with helmeted head and with club, wheel, conch and
lotus flower in Your hands. I long to see You in that form.
TEXT 47
श्रीभगवानजवाच
मया प्रसिेन तवार्जुनेदं
रूपं परं दज्ञशुतमात्मयोगात् ।
तेर्ोमयं ज्ञवश्वमनन्तमाद्यं
यन्मे त्वदन्येन न दृष्टपूवुम् ॥ ४७ ॥
śrī-bhagavān uvāca
mayā prasannena tavārjunedaṁ
rūpaṁ paraṁ darśitam ātma-yogāt
tejo-mayaṁ viśvam anantam ādyaṁ
yan me tvad anyena na dṛṣṭa-pūrvam
Translation
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: My dear Arjuna, happily have
I shown you, by My internal potency, this supreme universal form within
the material world. No one before you has ever seen this primal form,
unlimited and full of glaring effulgence.
TEXT 48
न वेदयिाध्ययनैनु दानै-
नु च ज्ञियाज्ञभनु तपोज्ञभरुग्रै: ।
एवंरूप: शक्य अहं नृलोके
द्रष्टजं त्वदन्येन कजरुप्रवीर ॥ ४८ ॥
na veda-yajñādhyayanair na dānair
na ca kriyābhir na tapobhir ugraiḥ
evaṁ-rūpaḥ śakya ahaṁ nṛ-loke
draṣṭuṁ tvad anyena kuru-pravīra
Translation
O best of the Kuru warriors, no one before you has ever seen this universal
form of Mine, for neither by studying the Vedas, nor by performing
sacrifices, nor by charity, nor by pious activities, nor by severe penances
can I be seen in this form in the material world.
TEXT 49
मा ते व्यथा मा च ज्ञवमूढभावो
दृष्वा रूपं घोरमीदृङ्ममेदम् ।
व्यपेतभी: प्रीतमना: पजनस्त्वं
तदे व मे रूपज्ञमदं प्रपश्य ॥ ४९ ॥
mā te vyathā mā ca vimūḍha-bhāvo
dṛṣṭvā rūpaṁ ghoram īdṛṅ mamedam
vyapeta-bhīḥ prīta-manāḥ punas tvaṁ
tad eva me rūpam idaṁ prapaśya
Translation
You have been perturbed and bewildered by seeing this horrible feature
of Mine. Now let it be finished. My devotee, be free again from all
disturbances. With a peaceful mind you can now see the form you desire.
TEXT 50
सञ्जय उवाच
इत्यर्जुनं वासजदेवस्तथोक्त्वा
स्वकं रूपं दशुयामास भूय: ।
आश्वासयामास च भीतमेनं
भूत्वा पजन: सौम्यवपजमुहात्मा ॥ ५० ॥
sañjaya uvāca
ity arjunaṁ vāsudevas tathoktvā
svakaṁ rūpaṁ darśayām āsa bhūyaḥ
āśvāsayām āsa ca bhītam enaṁ
bhūtvā punaḥ saumya-vapur mahātmā
Translation
Sañjaya said to Dhṛtarāṣṭra: The Supreme Personality of Godhead,
Kṛṣṇa, having spoken thus to Arjuna, displayed His real four-armed form
and at last showed His two-armed form, thus encouraging the fearful
Arjuna.
TEXT 51
अर्जुन उवाच
दृष्वे दं मानजषं रूपं तव सौम्यं र्नादु न ।
इदानीमत्थस्म संवृत्त: सचेता: प्रकृज्ञतं गत: ॥ ५१ ॥
arjuna uvāca
dṛṣṭvedaṁ mānuṣaṁ rūpaṁ
tava saumyaṁ janārdana
idānīm asmi saṁvṛttaḥ
sa-cetāḥ prakṛtiṁ gataḥ
Translation
When Arjuna thus saw Kṛṣṇa in His original form, he said: O Janārdana,
seeing this humanlike form, so very beautiful, I am now composed in
mind, and I am restored to my original nature.
TEXT 52
श्रीभगवानजवाच
सजदजदुशुज्ञमदं रूपं दृष्टवानज्ञस यन्मम ।
दे वा अप्यस्य रूपस्य ज्ञनत्यं दशुनकाङ्ज्ञक्षि: ॥ ५२ ॥
śrī-bhagavān uvāca
su-durdarśam idaṁ rūpaṁ
dṛṣṭavān asi yan mama
devā apy asya rūpasya
nityaṁ darśana-kāṅkṣiṇaḥ
Translation
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: My dear Arjuna, this form of
Mine you are now seeing is very difficult to behold. Even the demigods are
ever seeking the opportunity to see this form, which is so dear.
TEXT 53
नाहं वेदैनु तपसा न दानेन न चेज्यया ।
शक्य एवंज्ञवधो द्रष्टजं दृष्टवानज्ञस मां यथा ॥ ५३ ॥
nāhaṁ vedair na tapasā
na dānena na cejyayā
śakya evaṁ-vidho draṣṭuṁ
dṛṣṭavān asi māṁ yathā
Translation
The form you are seeing with your transcendental eyes cannot be
understood simply by studying the Vedas, nor by undergoing serious
penances, nor by charity, nor by worship. It is not by these means that one
can see Me as I am.
TEXT 54
भक्त्याा त्वनन्यया शक्य अहमेवंज्ञवधोऽर्जुन ।
िातजं द्रष्टजं च तत्त्वेन प्रवेष्टजं च परन्तप ॥ ५४ ॥
bhaktyā tv ananyayā śakya
aham evaṁ-vidho ’rjuna
jñātuṁ draṣṭuṁ ca tattvena
praveṣṭuṁ ca paran-tapa
Translation
My dear Arjuna, only by undivided devotional service can I be understood
as I am, standing before you, and can thus be seen directly. Only in this
way can you enter into the mysteries of My understanding.
TEXT 55
मत्कमुकृन्मत्परमो मद्भक्त: सङ्गवज्ञर्ुत: ।
ज्ञनवैर: सवुभूतेषज य: स मामेज्ञत पाण्डव ॥ ५५ ॥
mat-karma-kṛn mat-paramo
mad-bhaktaḥ saṅga-varjitaḥ
nirvairaḥ sarva-bhūteṣu
yaḥ sa mām eti pāṇḍava
Translation
My dear Arjuna, he who engages in My pure devotional service, free from
the contaminations of fruitive activities and mental speculation, he who
works for Me, who makes Me the supreme goal of his life, and who is
friendly to every living being – he certainly comes to Me.
