Welcome to English in Practice (EPR511S)


This course aims to enhance the learning of advanced grammar aspects to improve the language usage skills
necessary to communicate effectively and accurately in writing. Upon completion of this course, you are expected
to be able to:
 demonstrate the correct use of advanced grammar aspects such as active and passive voice, reported speech
and conditionals.
 apply reading techniques such as reading for facts, reading for understanding, speed reading and cluster
reading to increase reading speed.
 integrate new vocabulary found in the course resources, specifically in academic texts, in writing and speaking.
 summarise texts in note and prose form in their own words, capturing the important ideas in a text.
 apply critical reading and thinking skills through academic texts and infer meaning from and analyse texts to
answer questions.
 apply essay writing skills and strategies to write focused, lucid, and cohesive opinion and argumentative
essays.
 engage with emerging technologies to improve online reading and discussion.

Class attendance is compulsory: face-to face classes or MS Teams sessions. ALL scheduled tests are compulsory.

Continuous Assessment:
Assessment 1: Reading Comprehension and grammar = [100 marks]
Assessment 2: Opinion Essay OR Argumentative Essay = [100 marks]
Assessment 3: Critical Reading and Summarising = [80 marks + 20 marks = 100 marks]
EXAM ORDINARY: 27 MAY-14 JUNE 2024 SUPPLEMENTARY EXAM: 08 JULY 2024
Assessments weights to final mark:
Final mark: Assessment 1 [50%] + Assessment 2 [25%] + Assessment 3 [25%] = [100 marks]

NB: Supplementary test for all the student who missed any of the assessment with or without a reason, but each
student will only be given one chance to write the supplementary test.

Makeup test for students with a failed mark of 37% - 39% only.

Please note: All scheduled assessments will be written on campus. The venue and time will be communicated to you by
your lecturer. Students may only write one supplementary test. If you miss more than one of the scheduled
assessments, you will only be allowed to write the one carrying the highest weight and you will get no marks for the
other assessments that you missed. Hence class attendance is very important.
