STATICS, STRENGTH OF MATERIALS, & DESIGN OF STRUCTURES

Instructor: Peyman Jahed Teaching Assistants:

Class Meeting time: 5:30 – 6:45 pm

The Purpose of This Course (Philosophy):

The purpose of this course is to introduce conceptual and analytical methods for structural analysis and
design that would enable students to become better architectural designers. After successful completion of
this course students should be able to: understand simple statics; become familiar with design of wood,
steel, and concrete structures; can design simple wood and steel beams; understand gravity and lateral
loads and structural systems that can resist them.

Texts: REQUIRED
1. STRUCTURE FOR ARCHITECTS: A PRIMER, RAMSEY DABBY AND ASHWANI BEDI, WILEY, 2ND EDITION, ISBN: 978-0-
470-63376-2
2. BUILDING STRUCTURES ILLUSTRATED: PATTERNS, SYSTEMS, AND DESIGN, FRANCIS D. K. CHING, BARRY S. ONOUYE,
DOUGLAS ZUBERBUHLER, WILEY, 2ND EDITION, ISBN: 978-1-118-84830-2

Recommended:
1. Why Buildings Stand Up, Mario Salvadori, W. W. Norton & Company
2. Why Buildings Fall Down: How Structures Fail, Mario Salvadori, W. W. Norton & Company
3. Building Construction Illustrated, Francis Ching, Cassandra Adams. John Wiley & Sons Inc.
4. Building Codes Illustrated: A Guide to Understanding the International Building Code, Francis D. K.
Ching, Steven R. Winkel, Francis D. K. Ching, Steven Winkel, AIA. John Wiley & Sons Inc.

Course Description:
By using variety of method including conceptual, analytical, and digital, we will try to better understand
structural behavior under all types of loads on individual structural members as well as whole structure. The
ultimate goal of this class is to enable students to be able to understand structures under different loading
conditions so that they can become better designers.

Content of the Course:

• Statics, Beams and Columns, and Trusses

• Gravity and Lateral Forces
• Building Systems to Resist Gravity and Lateral Forces

If Time permits, the following subjects will be discussed as well.

• Building-Structure Materials Wood, Steel, and Concrete Construction
• Walls
• Foundations
• Introduction to Analytical Software, BIM

Homework Policy:
UK College of Design School of Architecture
ARC434 Spring 2022

Homework assignments will be made periodically throughout the semester. All homework must be submitted
(see below) before class on the due date. Late homework is not acceptable except for unusual circumstances
beyond the control of the student.
All homework must be done neatly and submitted as follows:
Students will be invited to google drive, where you will have access to a folder labeled "Student
Homework Submissions" and inside that folder you should only have access to the folder with your name
on it. If everyone will just be sure to save their homework as a pdf* with the filename
"HW(#)_LastnameFirstname.pdf" and upload to your folder before class starts on the day it's due, we
will grade it and re-upload in the same folder "Graded_HW(#)_LastnameFirstname" so everything will
just live in the same place for you.

Quizzes: Two quizzes will be given during the semester. Each quiz will be approximately 75 minutes.
Notebooks:
Notebooks will be collected at the end of semester and they will be graded (See Course Grade). Notebooks
must be 8 ½”x11” in size. Leave the first few pages blank so that at the end of the semester you could fill the
pages with a table of content and an introduction written by you. Start at a new page for each lecture and
always date at the top of the page. You must include additional material in your notebook after each lecture.
Always start this section again with date and state that these are your notes etc. Be creative and teach
yourself by studying the lecture material and other references and writing the summary in words or graphical
forms in your notes.

Final Exam:
A comprehensive, two-hour exam will be given at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday May 5, 2022. The final exam is
optional see Course Grade.

Class attendance:
Class attendance is mandatory: For each unexcused absence after three unexcused absences your total grade
will be reduced by one point (see Letter Grade Scale).
