Assessment #4
A.
1. In the modern era, technology has become an integral part of our lives, shaping and influencing
every aspect of how we live and interact with the world. It is considered as an human activity because
it has become an extension of our capabilities, enabling us to achieve feats that were once
unimaginable. Technology is also considered as a “means to an end” because it serves a purpose to
support human activity. Furthermore, it has become a tool or method to achieve specific goals or
solve particular problems, involving the creation, development, and use of tools, machines, internet
and systems.

2. Technology should be questioned because according to Heidegger, the enframing nature of

technology disconnects us from our essential being-in-the-world and blinds us to alternative ways of
existence. Therefore, it is critical to question and evaluate the impact of technology to human lives
that will improve and embrace human flourishing in a way of reassessing the relationship with
technology and not take its presence for granted. Consequently, human being can embrace and
cultivate a deeper connection with the world with a renewed understanding of the essence of
technology and its profound implications for human existence.

3. Technology reveals our potential and ability to be creative in innovating the world around us. It
reflects our understanding of natural phenomena, problem-solving skills, and the pursuit of efficiency.
Moreover, the usage of technology reveals the true nature of a human being whether he/she will use
technology in a bad or good way. As a result, the footprints of this usage and consequences are what
reflects the values, dignity, and principles of a person.

4. The concept of “standing reserve” is derived from Martin Heidegger’s philosophy. In the context of
technology, it refers to how everything is perceived as a potential resource or reserve for human use.
This mindset views the world and its elements primarily in terms of utility and instrumental value,
treating them as standing reserve waiting to be exploited for human purposes. This perspective can
influence how we approach nature, objects, technology, and even human relationships in a utilitarian
manner.

5. Technology can either alter or not alter the essence of humans because it has only the potential to
influence and impact various aspects of human life. The essence of humans is often considered to
involve fundamental qualities like consciousness, emotions, morality, actions, and the capacity for
meaningful relationships. While technology can enhance our capabilities, change our environments,
and influence behaviors, it doesn’t fundamentally alter these core aspects of human essence.
Technology is a tool created and shaped by humans, reflecting our intentions, values, and societal
structures. However, ethical considerations, privacy issues, and the impact on social dynamics are
important factors to be mindful for the advancements of technology.
