The University of Washington (UW), a

SUMMARY multi-campus public research university

located in Seattle is holding a
fundraiser. However, this fundraising was
CASE hampered by the existence of dirty data
that caused large volumes of undeliverable
mail, wasted postage and excessive
production costs, and worst of all a loss
in fundraising opportunities.

Therefore, to improve the quality of

its donor database, UW is working with
Melissa Data, a data collection and
verification group. Together they
implemented an extensive proactive data
quality program to fix the dirty data
problem.
Why was there dirty data in the
UW database?
UW has a poor data quality program, where
Answer: UW collects contact information from
multiple sources resulting in copious data
errors, duplicate, and outdated records in
their database that houses the names,
addresses, and other relevant information
about more than 900,000 student, faculty,
staff, alumni, and sports event attendees.

Other cause is maintaining accurate records

on students was difficult because students
are transient (relocating due to job
offers, getting married, changing names.)
What were the consequences to UW of
dirty data?
UW collects contact information for their fundraising from multiple sources
and this was resulting in copious data errors and duplicate records in their
database. The contact information in UW's donor records also quickly became
outdated.

This large volume of dirty data resulted in:

How did UW The University worked with Melissa
