NOLI ME TANGERE

Juan Crisóstomo Ibarra returns to the Philippines after seven years of study in Europe. He is
greeted by Don Santiago de los Santos, also known as "Capitan Tiago," who throws a welcome
home party. Padre Dámaso Vardolagas, a former parish priest, belittles and insults Ibarra. Ibarra
builds a school and, after a sabotage incident, is excommunicated by Dámaso. He is then forced
to marry Alfonso Linares de Espadaña, a Peninsulares who arrived from Spain. Ibarra's
excommunication is lifted, and he is accepted back into the Church.

A revolt occurs, and Ibarra is arrested and detained. Ibarra escapes from prison with the help of
Elías, who has taken the shots. On Christmas Eve, Elías finds the altar boy Basilio cradling his
already-dead mother, Sisa. He instructs Basilio to build a funeral pyre and create a funeral pyre
to find gold and use it for education. Elías instructs Basilio to continue dreaming about freedom
for his motherland.

Tiago becomes addicted to opium and frequents the opium house in Binondo. María Clara
becomes a nun, and Salví uses her to satisfy his lascivious desires. One stormy evening, a
beautiful yet insane woman is seen crying and cursing the heavens for the fate it has handed her.

EL FILIBUSTERISMO
Crisostomo Ibarra returns to the Philippines as Simoun, a wealthy jeweler who seeks revenge
against the government and the upper classes. He plans to rescue María Clara from a monastery
and eliminate evils in Filipino society. Simoun's true identity is discovered by Basilio, a medical
student at Ateneo Municipal. After his mother's death and brother Crispín's disappearance,
Basilio travels to Manila to study. He is adopted by Capitan Tiago and attends Colegio de
SanJuan de Letrán. Despite opposition from Dominican friars, they establish a Spanish language
academy. However, they are defeated and held hostage by a spy disguised as a poor man.
Simoun keeps in contact with the bandit group Kabesang Tales, who has suffered misfortunes at
the hands of the friars. To strengthen the revolution, Simoun has Quiroga, a Chinese man,
smuggle weapons into the country. He plans to attack during a stage play but is aborted when he
learns of María Clara's death in the monastery.

After a mock celebration by students, the city becomes agitated and authorities arrest them.
Basilio, a student, is arrested and Capitan Tiago dies. His will, forged by Padre Irene, is divided
among Santa Clara, the archbishop, the Pope, and religious orders, leaving Basilio in prison. A
high official attempts to release Basilio, but the Capitan-General coerces him to resign. Julî,
Basilio's girlfriend, is raped by Padre Camorra, and she jumps over the balcony to her death.
Basilio joins Simoun's revolution, planning to hide an explosive inside a kerosene lamp for the
wedding of Paulita Gómez and Juanito. However, Isagani, Basilio's friend, sabotages the plan
and escapes. Simoun, now unmasked as the perpetrator of the failed revolution, becomes a
fugitive and seeks shelter at Padre Florentino's home. He reveals his true identity to Padre
Florentino and explains that God did not forsake him, but his plans were for personal interest.
