INSTRUCTIONS: Write a paper discussing whether the Angolan civil war war a proxy war of the
Cold War or whether it was driven by a different rational. The paper should be between 1300-1500 words.
The word limit is not negotiable and failing to adhere to the word limit negatively affects your grading.
Make sure your paper is written clearly and eloquently and supported by evidence. A successful essay
will explain and evaluate the main argument(s) and assess whether the supporting evidence convincingly
supports the main argument being made.

Discussion 40  You are expected to write the essay in your own words therefore no more
than 10% of the essay should be quoted. Only use quotations when you
cannot paraphrase or summarize the content without losing its impact, value,
or meaning.
 The facts, ideas, and points are arranged properly. One idea per paragraph.
 The links between the paragraphs should be good and there is a smooth
transition from one paragraph to another.
 The information presented must be relevant to the question being asked.
 Support your essay with facts and evidence (demonstrate that you have
studied many sources)
 Avoid repetition!
 Provide evidence/ examples.
 Historical issues are seldom clear cut and historians often disagree with one
another. Good papers acknowledge disagreement and differing points of view

References 10  You must support your paper with 5 academic references (Books, book
chapters, journal papers, newspaper articles etc.).
 YouTube, Wikipedia, personal blogs, or no reviewed sources will NOT be
accepted as valid references.
 Every single reference cited in the text must appear in the bibliography and
conversely, all the references in the final list must be cited in the main text or
figure captions.
 The final list of references does not add to the total word count.
 Only Chicago referencing is allowed.
