THE ANALYSIS
COSMO-SkyMed, Sentinel 1, RadarSAT and TerraSAR-X
data have been used to generate displacement maps by the use
of interferometric analysis technique. The historical analysis of
the last 15 years have been provided to allow a clear
understanding of the behavior of the area.
PS INSAR analysis, thanks to the high point density is able to monitor deformation of silos and containers that
can be due to subsidence phenomena or to the deformation of the structure itself.
The 3D information supports the deformation interpretation: a basement collapse, the ground subsidence,
problems on the top.

THE RESULTS
Topographic and interferometric satellite measurements are
coherent showing stability of the infrastructure
Mosul dam:

TAILINGS DAM
to guarantee high safety in working conditions and limited
environmental impact. Pits and tailing dams are the most critical assets
to be taken under control.
• Tailing dams, which contain toxic material, derived by the first
extraction process, which can contaminate the environment
• In addition, mining sites have to be monitored also after their closure to
preserve a safe environment avoiding landslides, contamination and
major accident.
Mining sites are complex and wide areas including several assets (mine pits, tailing dams, piles, transport networks, …).
Mining site is a dynamic and highly challenging environment Satellite based ground deformations and subsidence
requiring great attention to avoid management failures monitoring is a key technology used during the entire
affecting: mine lifecycle:
• Safety of staff and surveyors • Design
• Environmental impact of the mining activities • Exploitation
• Production down-time • After closure

In order to ease the data interpretation, 3D deformation models are generated considering the
PS INSAR measures as main constraints for the deformation.
PSs are projected on the building model and used as constraints for the propagation of a
mathematical model of deformation over the building.

SAR data allow an automatic analysis over wide areas supporting the
identification of regions where main changes has happened.
With the use of optical data it is also possible to identify the type of
change ( a new building, deforestation activities, a landslide, etc.).
Two main analysis can be performed according to the type of change to be detected:
• Incremental Changes Detection for incremental step-wise changes as buildings
constructions
Heat maps of changes identify the areas more subjected to the changes
ALONG PIPELINE they would require complex systems of camera and sensors,
not feasible and too costly in installation and maintenance.
Automatic SAR Change Detection Even more if underground pipelines
• SAR CD analysis supports the identification of areas more
subjected to changes and activities, guiding on site surveys by
drone or teams on field
ENCROACHMENT monitor due to their wide extension, even more considering the
absence of any instruments or sensors used on operational tracks.
ILLICIT ACTIVITIES • These assets usually has a respect areas that have to be preserved
and strictly controlled by any activities that may influence
operations.
Optical Change Detection
• Works, trees cutting, waste depot may be cause serious problem to
the operations if not promptly identifies and managed.
ENCROACHMENT monitor due to their wide extension, even more considering the
absence of any instruments or sensors used on operational tracks.
VEGETATION • Trees and other kind of vegetation can grow fast and invade the
respect area limiting operations
Optical Change Detection • Satellite analysis can support the identification of areas at risk
providing information for a proper and cost effective management
of the cuttings

• High building density causes a reduced «Sky View Factor». The limited air
circulation capacity retains heat in the urban structure. This effect is amplified
during the night.
• High minimum night temperatures carry a great health risk for some
segments of the population
with the UHI shows the areas with higher risk for population in case of
new heatwaves, enabling mitigation actions planning.
CITY OF MILAN
METROADAPT project UHI maps have been generated over the
whole metropolitan area. These have been used to generate risk
maps for population according to available statistical data, and
the whole has been used by the Metropolitan city to plan
mitigation actions as green roof.

SENSITIVE POPULATION
The map shows the distribution of population
according to the age in the city. For over 70s people
high night temperature is considered a risk for their
health.
RISK
The map shows the combination of temperature
behavior and population age distribution. Areas with
high values of night temperature and high average age
of population are the most critical. Over these areas
mitigation actions have to be defined.

• At the same time they are often very fragile and difficult to be
treated with standard methodologies which implies a certain level of
invasiveness.
• Remote sensing is a not invasive by definition technology that may
support the analysis of the status of the CH, limiting the use of on
site instrument only where and when really needed.

The Colosseum is one of the most famous and important monument in the Word.
In recent years several seismic events happened not far from Rome, and
moreover in 2019 works for new metro line (Metro C) in passed very close to the
monument.
A detailed InSAR analysis has been performed before the arrival of the tunnel
boring machine and after it pass, in order to verify that all the site has not been
impacted by the works and not just the area closer to the metro path.
