Surface deformation analysis for leak and sinkhole prevention

The AWARE platform provides tools to support the analysis of

INSAR data.
Given a linear infrastructure, it is possible to set a buffer in the
surrounding of any element of the infrastructure and perform an
infrastructure analysis on the time evolution of the infrastructure element based
on the displacement value measured with the PSP technique: the
average of the displacements of all PS included in the buffer are
calculated to provide the time series of the selected element

PSP analysis supporting identification of water infrastructure damages:
Average infrastructure deformation calculated from INSAR measurements

Given a linear infrastructure, it is possible to set up a buffer

around the entire infrastructure and calculate the average
velocity deformation (or other parameters) of each element
based on the results of the PSP.
The output is a new infrastructure layer generated and published
directly by AWARE, which is characterized based on the value
of the calculated parameters (e.g., the average velocity of all
PSs in the buffer for each element of the infrastructure).

oil extraction platforms. The service is mainly devoted to strictly
monitoring the possible subsidence derived from gas and oil
extraction activities. The service is unique in Italy and leader in

CHANGE DETECTION & ENCROACHMENT
ANALYSIS

Multi temporal analysis based remote sensing data allows to identify

changes in the territory in terms of land use as well as new anthropic
activities.

SAR data allow an automatic analysis over wide areas supporting the
identification of regions where main changes has happened.

With the use of optical data it is also possible to identify the type of
change ( a new building, deforestation activities, a landslide, etc.).

The combined approach (multi sensor SAR+Optical) speeds up the

analysis over very wide areas integrating automatic SAR data based
analysis with identification capabilities of optical data based analysis

Aware - Company General Use - © e-GEOS

Company General Use
AUTOMATIC SAR CHANGE DETECTION
By the use of interferometric couples or stacks of SAR images, it is possible to
highlight step-wise changes over extensive and remote areas

Two main analysis can be performed according to the type of change to be detected:
• Incremental Changes Detection for incremental step-wise changes as buildings
constructions

• Random Changes Detection  for random step-wise changes as parking lots,

works, etc.

Heat maps of changes identify the areas more subjected to the changes

CHANGE DETECTION WITH OPTICAL DATA
Change detection analysis based on optical satellite, aerial and drones data allows to detect and identify changes in the territory and

The type (legend) and minimum size of changes that are

identified depend on:
• Objectives: e.g. land use monitoring, environmental
protection, prevention of illegal activities, works monitoring,
vegetation analysis;
• Image resolution: the higher the resolution of the images,
the more it is possible to detect changes of small dimensions.

INDUSTRIAL SITE THE CONTEXT

INSPECTION Insurances are used to send inspectors to assess characteristics of an
industrial site and correlated risks. Inspections can be costly and expose the
personnel to risks connected to travels and, general contact with people
especially after the Covid-19 crisis. Specific cartography based on remote
sensing data can avoid or at least limit inspections providing precious
information for the risk evaluation

COASTLINE EROSION THE CONTEXT

MONITORING • Coastal erosion may have many implications in daily life as in

business activities, from tourism to damages to infrastructures of
hydrogeological risk increment.
• By the use of satellite it is possible to analyse the coastline
evolution to prevent damages to infrastructure and other potential
issues.

URBAN HEAT
ISLAND

UHI MAPS
The problem:

• High building density causes a reduced «Sky View Factor». The limited air
circulation capacity retains heat in the urban structure. This effect is amplified
during the night.

• High minimum night temperatures carry a great health risk for some
segments of the population

The identification of Urban Heat Islands supports the administrations in planning

mitigation actions (e.g. green roof, new urban park, etc.) making the urban
environment more sustainable.

Aware - Company General Use - © e-GEOS

Company General Use
SOLUTION
Combining the historical data of past heatwaves in the urban area with
nighttime satellite acquisitions, UHI maps highlight Land Surface
Temperatures (LST) anomalies in the urban structure.

The integration of statistical data as

• Population age distribution over the city,
• Buildings type (e.g. hospitals)
• Socio economical information

with the UHI shows the areas with higher risk for population in case of
new heatwaves, enabling mitigation actions planning.

URBAN HEAT THE CONTEXT

ISLAND FOR Statistical analysis demonstrates the increase of mortality in cities
during hot seasons. People over 70 and below 10 years old are
METROPOLITAN the more affected. The Metropolitan city of Milan has started
projects to reduce the phenomenon. Within the LIFE

CITY OF MILAN
METROADAPT project UHI maps have been generated over the
whole metropolitan area. These have been used to generate risk
maps for population according to available statistical data, and
the whole has been used by the Metropolitan city to plan
mitigation actions as green roof.

CULTURAL THE CONTEXT

• Cultural Heritage sites and buildings have a unique value for

HERITAGE citizens, a value that goes beyond any possible economic aspect,
being representative of the history and culture of a Nation.
• At the same time they are often very fragile and difficult to be
treated with standard methodologies which implies a certain level of
invasiveness.
• Remote sensing is a not invasive by definition technology that may
support the analysis of the status of the CH, limiting the use of on
site instrument only where and when really needed.

COLOSSEUM SITE
MONITORING

The Colosseum is one of the most famous and important monument in the Word.
In recent years several seismic events happened not far from Rome, and
moreover in 2019 works for new metro line (Metro C) in passed very close to the
monument.
A detailed InSAR analysis has been performed before the arrival of the tunnel
boring machine and after it pass, in order to verify that all the site has not been
impacted by the works and not just the area closer to the metro path.
